For those that downrig for stripers or trout, how far back is your lure to the weight ball?

Do you feel the cannonball scares fish away if the lure is a few feet away from the ball?

For striper I like to err on the side of caution. Soooo i'm a good 50 feet back before I hookup to the ball.

at 50 feet, which line holder are you using? I was looking into the black one.

I use the Cannon adjustable. Since I'm pulling an umbrella rig around on 30 lb mono there is a fair amount of resistance and it took a while to set it right so it wouldn't release on its own but would still let go when a fish hit. This is the one http://www.basspro.com/Cannon-Universal-Stacker-Release/product/45773/

I put about 100 or more feet out. I think the deeper you go,, the closer to the ball you can get away with, and I rarely go deeper than 50'. If you only had the line out 10 or 20 ft and were only down 15-30 ft, I'd say for sure your boat and prop wash would have a big impact on the fish.
