I sent an email to DFW asking for clarification about this regulation, here's their reply:

"Trout may be kept on a stringer that is attached to your kayak or float tube. It doesn't matter if the trout are dead or alive, if they are on a stringer. The section you cited refers to trout that are alive and in a container that is on or attached to your boat-or in your case a kayak. Yes, a kayak would count if the trout were alive and in a container. A stringer is not a container, so you are well within the law. I hope this helps clear up any confusion. Remember, the key is if the trout are alive and in a container. "

I hope this info clears up some confusion about the regulation stated in the post.
