Since I sold my Champion last year I was in a market for a more fuel economical nearshore rockfish/striper killing machine.

Searched Craigslist and found this Starcraft for $550. Ended up being a lot more work than I had hoped and offered the guy $300, he didn't wanna sell it but didn't want to keep it either soooooo.. $300 bones it was.

I then resold the old Merc 50 on it for $200 to a "collector" of sorts of old outboards.. Hence the $100 boat..

Yeah, I know when you see the pics your going to realize it was WAY more than a $100 dollar boat. However I stress that everything I have done was periodical so in the end I am in NO debt and now I have this for my efforts.

When I picked her up, May 19th

The rebuild on the trailer looks great, looks sturdy enough to take you any where you want to go. Starcraft is a very nice brand. I see that it is made quite well lots of ribs on the floor board. The transom appears to coming along and you will have one tough enough to hold any of the lighter 4 stroke motors. Don't knopw if you have anything picked out now, new or used but whatever it will be the transsome should hold it without any trouble.

Motor only had 20 hrs on it.. I bought it for 3600 bucks and seats, gauges, motor, controls, fish finder, down rigger.. etc etc...

Thanks for looking and hopefully see some of you out on the water!

I know title says 100... but all in all I estimate between 5-5500 I spent over th 7 months it took me to rebuild this 44 year old rig...
I still have a few things to do. For instance put a buttseat/lean post on the casting deck and that seat in the pics just forward of the passenger seat, and install a Trolling motor

Old WW2 surplus aluminum sure was made right back then.

Mike I just caught up to this thread. Fantastic work!!!

That looks better than new and to top it off with a modern motor you would never know how old it is.

Not long ago I was talking to Exfactor about old boat restoration, kinda like how some people will do that to classic cars. It sounds like a great business to get into except with all the hours involved it would be next to impossible to turn a profit. Better to buy it already restored than try and do it to make any money in most cases.
I know many people that have restored cars and if they were lucky they might get the dollar investment back only. But with some Sweat equity like what you have done, that boat is worth a lot more than the money invested.

BTW if you are searching for another motor and run across a 90-125HP anywhere for a decent price let me know.

Have fun and enjoy the new ride.

I do infact have a guy with a Evinrude... Standby on that end.

There is NO money made in this kinda restoration.

Say I spend 5500 on this boat ok? What would someone pay for this thing?

Just for giggles 10,000.. I don't know if thats even comparable but lets say.. I then made 4,500 for 7 months of weekend and afterwork time...

If it was a guys profession, I would estimate it a full 1.5 month project.. so 3,000 a month and thats without factoring taxes, business expenses etc.. and I tell ya thats a hard 3,000 dollar a month job

Beautiful boat. Nice work.

This got me thinking. Recently, on random hikes, I've spotted two boat, similar size to your $100, dumped. One is in East Vale/Corona, the other is in Highland. If anyone wants one to do a project on (these were mostly intact but definitely would need some work), let me know. I have no way of hauling 'em out, would love to hear if anyone wants em. Random finds lol.

Just a beautiful rebuild.
You gave that boat another 30 years, at least.
Thanks for sharing the work.

For what its worth coming from a guy with no mechanical aptitude and no tools, that was a great post, and your new (old) boat is beautiful. Congratulations on the great job you did. I hope you are very proud of it. It's so much better than buying a new boat, and thanks for taking the time to share the process with all the explanations and photos.

Nice rebuild Mike. You've got an instant (read, 7 month gestation) family heirloom there. I can hear you kids telling their grandchildren about how you rebuilt that boat into a fish catching machine.

Now, go get some blood on the deck. We're waiting for the blood soaked reports.

Wow.............................You know all summer and into the fall, Bob was telling me about the boat that you were restoring............You brought that boat back from the dead! Now it looks like a mean, clean, striper killing machine!!!!! Thank you for sharing the progression of the restoration from start to finish, I am getting tired just thinking of all the work, hopefully I will get to meet you in person this year, and see your boat up close..................................Dave
