Okay, no more bonus reports, time for a fresh report, lol

First, I want to wish a couple of my S.W.A.T. brothers a Happy Birthday. Dan’s (SP Dan) birthday was yesterday and Mike’s (Bones) is today! :Thumbs Up:

Hit the sand for the final time in 2012 after my original plans for the weekend fell through.
My buddy Phuong (Blackwater) and I was supposed to fly back East to go to the Redskins vs Cowboys game, but… Thanks a lot Phuong! If the Skins make the Super Bowl, we’re going... and on your dime buddy. :Envious:

Anyways, on to Plan B... gave Lieutenant Bones a call and we laid out an attack plan for Sunday. Mike has been fishing hard to secure the lead in the legal Halibut count on the S.W.A.T. Challenge Leader Board. As of Sunday morning, he was tied with Robert (Murrieta Angler) and the two have been fiercely battling it out, knowing that the next legal Halibut will most likely secure the 1st place trophy in that category. By Sunday afternoon… the tie would be broken, read on…

As most of you probably already know, a very talented airbrush “Artist” has been customizing my LC’s. I got my first batch back last Friday and was excited to put them in action.

Here are the LC’s that I sent him in the initial batch.

This is the finished product that I got back… Wow.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/JK7-1.jpg

I installed all the hardware of my choice and they were ready for the battlefield.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/SWAT1006-1_zpsb7dd771c.jpg

We hit the first A.O. at grey light and was greeted with big swells and rough conditions. It was expected as we tracked conditions the night before, but took our chances anyway… Forget about chasing Flatties with this harsh condition. Let's change tactics and hunt for Perch. We located a nice and wide trench and annihilated the big Barred Surf Perch. These big Perch were in pre-spawn mode and were so aggressive, hammering the LC left and right. :EyePop: We probably caught a couple dozens of them in about an hour and lost many more. The best part is that they were all in the 12-14” range, no dinks!

As usual, I’m geared up and ready to go and waiting for Grandpa Bones to get ready… :Rolls Eyes:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/SWAT1009-3_zpsc8a43fa4.jpg

I put the Senorita Fish pattern LC in action first.

The results were an immediate success. :Big Grin:

I'm going to share with you guys something that happened between Mike and I on Sunday that I thought was pretty entertaining.
Mike was jokingly complaining to me that he rarely catches anything worthwhile when we fish together. In fact, he calls me the Fishing Mojo Vampire… because he claims I suck the fishing mojo out of him and steal all his catch, lol.

So, when we were gearing up in the dark at the first A.O., he tells me that he knows the reason why I catch more fish than he does and what his plan was for today. I couldn't wait to hear this... lol

Whenever we fish together, I usually tell him to go in front of me and I follow right behind as we work the surf side by side. More often than not, after Mike work a spot and move on, I step into it, get bit and pulls in a fish. I can’t explain it, but it happens a lot when I fish with my other S.W.A.T. Brother & Sisters too, I’m sure some of them can attest to it. When I fish with a partner or a group, I don’t care about positioning. You can fish in front of me, behind me, or on top of me… I don’t care. Because if you were meant to have a good day, you will have one. If the Skunk is in the cards, you will get Skunked and there’s nothing you can do about it. Just chalk it up as paying your dues to Poseidon and look ahead to the next session.

Anyways, Mike told me that for today, he wants me to go ahead of him while we work the sand together.
This was his theory. He said that he think that in the past, he would work in front and stir up the fish, wake them up, get them interested and into a feeding mode, only to have me step behind him and get the fish, lol  I said “Really... are you serious…???” :???: He says yup and insists that I fish ahead of him all day. :!!!:

So, we put his theory to work starting at the first A.O. I was in front of him the entire time and lit up the Perch. Out of the two dozen or so that we caught, at least 18-20 of them was mine, lol. So much for the theory?

As we were gearing up at the second A.O., I sarcastically asked Mike if he still wants me to go first… he says yes, stick to the plan and don’t try to trick him with any Mojo Sucking Vampire tricks. :Big Smile: Hahahaha. I laughed and said “Okay, you’re the Boss for the day…”

So we hit the surf and continued the assault. Much better conditions here at the 2nd location and I put in action another custom LC. Natural Rainbow Sardine.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/JK6.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/SWAT1013-2_zps6dfcc5db.jpg

We work our way down the beach and I pull in a short Hali, a very short at about 12” and not worth a pic. I look over at Mike and gave him a little wink, lol.
I kept moving down the beach ahead of him and about 10 minutes later nail another short Halibut, this one is about 18”. I look over at Mike, gave him a smirk… he just shakes his head... hahaha Then I farm another short Halibut a little while later... That's three fish for me and Mike don't even have a tap on the LC yet. :Envious:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/SWAT1011-2_zps885af972.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/SWAT1012-2_zps21256110.jpg

I stopped and asked Mike again if he wants to skip in front of me. He snapped back, “No damnit, keep going… stop @#*$&! with me!”
I laughed so hard I almost dropped down and roll around on the sand. So we kept moving down the beach with me slightly ahead of Mike. Once in a while, I would mess with him and yell “Hook up!” and start laughing… I could tell Mike wasn’t amused as he stayed quiet and didn’t even look over at me, lol. I love the friendly bantering among my S.W.A.T. Brothers and Sisters.

A little while later we came up on a really nice looking trough. My Spidey senses immediately goes off and I thought to myself… Oh man, I’m going to pull out a nice Halibut right here and that would really piss Mike off… I carefully worked the area thoroughly, making at least a dozen or more casts covering that entire hole. Nothing, so I moved off the spot and Mike stepped in behind me…

A few casts later… you guessed it, Mike hooks up! I look back and saw the nice bendo and the headshake action on his rod tip and thought that it looked like the right kind. I rush over to his side and Mike had the biggest smile on his face while he was fighting the fish, lol
Strong fish, taking him right and then left, taking drag… quite a battle. When Mike brought the fish into knee deep surf, I wade out a bit, looked down at the fish and yelled “Big Halibut! 30 incher!” Another 30 seconds and the Hali was flopping on the sand. Mike let out a roar and I gave him a well-deserved high five. :Dancing Banana:
After taping it out, a few pics and the release… Mike had a big smirk and the satisfied look of vindication on his face. :Envious:
Yes, Mike… you have proven your theory right, this time… Congratulations my friend and Happy Birthday!

What a great day it was. Success in the surf, fun time spent with a good friend and my Redskins beat the Cowgirls later that evening… life is good! :Big Grin:
I hope your weekend was as good or better than mine. Have a safe and wonderful New Year everybody!

Dan and Mike, happy belated birthday!

Mike, congrats again on a fruitful year. You are on fire buddy!

I was green with envy when i got the text, that is a beautiful specimen off the surf...right after the rain to boot!!!

As for Arthur's fishing mojo vampirism, well...we'll just have to put it through more extensive testing next year. At the next S.W.A.T. event perhaps?! =)

Happy New Year everyone, and thankyou for the eye candy report Arthur. I'm loving those Ayu and BSP LC's! Saved that pic as my wallpaper for laptop!

Most every time I've fished with you Arthur this would be the picture and comment you would make about me!..........

As usual, I’m geared up and ready to go and waiting for Grandpa Bones to get ready… :Rolls Eyes:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/SWAT1009-3_zpsc8a43fa4.jpg

When I started reading the part where Bones expressed his theory I had to laugh!...........I can't tell you how many times I've been on the water with my S.W.A.T. Friends and started thinking about where to position myself and wondered if the one chosen to fish the point was just the hound that flushed out the fish and got them interested in the next bait that came along. The secrets out now............Follow the Leader to get the big halibut!

I totally agree with you Arthur. Any time you hit the water no matter where it is or what you are fishing for there's always the chance that it's just not going to be your day. You can be throwing the same bait and using the same line as the guy fishing next to you but for some reason the fish just won't take what you have to offer and won't stay off the other guys line.. My feelings are, enjoy the day no matter what Poseidon has to offer. I also don't think it matters where you are in line, front or back it just takes the right cast in the right place at the right time.

However, next time we meet up Arthur......I'm letting you lead the way!:Envious:

Mike, Thanks for proving the theory of fishing behind the Boss!

Happy Birthday and Congratulations!

As usual, the Laurel & Hardy show never lets me down...
Mike, congrats on the legal halibut win... as well as another birthday in the books.
I remembered it was your birthday, from last year, when you got skunked...
I knew the two of you were going to make it out again and I threw a prayer out there to keep you both safe, as well as catch a nice fish to end the year...
It was a slow year in the surf for everybody, but it's the memories that count the most...
Lots of laughs, a few "Ouch's" and an occasional dunk from Poseidon...:Rolls Eyes:
I most definately look forward to the next year and I hear they are getting some WSB down here...:Big Grin:
Happy New Years to my extended family, as well as everyone else reading this.

Hey Arthur didn't Roy get your Mothers Day Halibut behind Bones?

Quote from Bones on 5-8-2011, "Yesterday was the tough one and I tried so hard to come through for you when I pounded that area of boilers with 50 casts right ahead of Roy and then he steps up to the same spot right behind me and sticks that nice legal on a few quick casts."

Mike fished the location hard and then moved up, then within minutes Roy pulls a 25" out. Mike might be onto something...

Arthur,
Reading through the report, you did keep me guessing whether Bones will get a big hit or end up with nada. Hahaha... What a great way to end 2012, a bunch of your catches and Mr. Bones 30" butt to lead the most legal butt award. Now it's a new run, I need to go get my new license! Thanks for the wonderful report, pictures and some lovely behind the scene footage. Happy new year!

Mr. Bones,
Glad that you stuck with your theory, it really paid off. Congrats to that legal butt to lead your counts for the year round reward. Late happy birthday my friend, and wish you an even better new year.

Thanks,

Well, another year in the books, Arthur, and bones, bantering with each other, trying to out guess the other lol. May need to try the "Alabama LC rig" so they have too many choices, and would definitely get some giggles out of Bones "your throwing a $100.00 rig there Mikey?" I have a theory, that Santa Barbara will be on fire this year on the butts, so might give the dynamic duo a run for their money. looking forward to time spent with the gang in the near future, and hoping all have many bent rods in the year to come.

The secrets out now............Follow the Leader to get the big halibut!

Thanks Terry, 2012 wasn't the best year as far as the fish count, but we've had plenty of firsts and great memories.
I'm grateful for everything and feel blessed to have all my S.W.A.T. Brothers & Sisters there to share all my special moments in and out of the surf.
Happy New Year my friend and I'm looking forward to your one-on-one session sometime soon... :Big Grin:

Very Nice!!!
Take Care, God Bless & DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!
Robert
<><
Robert, I really enjoyed watching you and Mike battle down the stretch and I was rooting for you BOTH equally.
Definitely a slow year in the surf, but like you said, the great memories made up for it. :Big Grin:
Happy New Year my friend and I'll see you at the S.W.A.T. gathering in February.

Phuong told me why he had to cancel the trip to DC with your Art. :Crying:
Should have called me, I woulda went with ya.
Those custom LCs looks awesome, the artist did a great job.
Nice fish Mike, released? That would have been my New Year's dinner.
Happy New Year to all.
Tell your Boss he popped my bubble Vince.
I asked the Iron Chef if she wanted to go, but she wasn't interested, lol
Alas, the tickets went back to my ticket broker less the restocking charge.
When the Skinz make it to the Super Bowl, I'm going to make Phuong ante up big time! :Envious:

Congrats on the Legal Mike !!! :Big Grin:

Was kinda wondering in general

if the Hali bite goes slower when the waters

get in the low 50,s ?

Nice LC,s Arthur, I like the Perch pattern, because

it looks real. He did an excellent job !!! :Big Grin:
Daniel, I used to believe and still somewhat believe that Halibut spawn twice a year. Once in the Spring/Summer and once in the Fall. Or that they do one or the other...
We all know that the Spring and Summer bite can be strong, but in past years, when the water temperature drops in the Fall/Winter, the bite also picks up. I've also caught Halibut in the Fall/Winter with fully developed egg sacks. Who knows why the Halibut move into the shallows during the colder months... to spawn? to chase bait fish? The point is to be ready for anything...

NO LIE!!! I love fishing with these two...just for the show.

Congrats Mike on the legal! Great way to wrap up the year.
Happy birthday Mike and Dan! And happy New Year to everyone!

Don

PS - There's something to "following" Arthur instead of taking point. The first time I fished with him, I got two seabass following his lead. You might be on to something Mike!...of course it hasn't worked since.
Mike and I have a great time talking sh*t to each other out there...
I was messing with him a couple of times by telling him that I just got a text from Robert telling me that he just caught a couple of legals, just to see the look on Mike's face, lol :Big Smile:
Hey, I think you caught a Bird one time following me too... hahahaha
Happy New Year my friend. :Big Grin:

Very nice LC's Arthur. Happy Bday SP Dan and Mike.
DR

Hey Arthur didn't Roy get your Mothers Day Halibut behind Bones?

Quote from Bones on 5-8-2011, "Yesterday was the tough one and I tried so hard to come through for you when I pounded that area of boilers with 50 casts right ahead of Roy and then he steps up to the same spot right behind me and sticks that nice legal on a few quick casts."

Mike fished the location hard and then moved up, then within minutes Roy pulls a 25" out. Mike might be onto something...
I'll never forget that photo of you. Classic shot..
Would like to see that photo again if you still have it around.
WWO
Yup, that's exactly what happened that day Bill... one of my most treasured memories in the surf. :Big Grin:

Arthur, beautiful L C's...
Bones, beautiful fish , and Happy Birthday.....

Happy New Year to All !

Capt'n
Thanks Scott, have a wonderful New Year! :Big Grin:

Arthur,
Reading through the report, you did keep me guessing whether Bones will get a big hit or end up with nada.

Thanks,
ALbert (jinbow)
Thanks Albert, it was nice to go on a little legal Halibut run to end the year... :Envious:
Got my license and I'm ready for 2013.
I'm going to send something to you in the mail, keep your eyes open sometime next week.

Everybody above has expressed my feelings on the photo's above so all that left is to say congrats, pretty LC's great story non-fiction at that.
Good times... good luck to you in the surf for 2013.

Great end of season report! Congrats to Bones for the nice hali to end the year on a good note. Those LC's are true works of art. Your LC painter has mad skillz!
Thanks Dan... hope you get to hit the surf more often in the New Year buddy. :Big Grin:

Happy belated birthday Mike and Dan!

First of all, Congrats on the 29er Mike. Shes a beauty!
Thats an interesting theory you got there  I am curious to see the results after you give it a few more tests runs.

Those LCs are pretty impressive. After seeing that BSP pattern, I tried to go make my own with a gold sharpie. Its no where near as good lol :Envious:

Thanks for the end of the year report. Now its time to start some 2013 reports! Can't wait to see the page load up with Ghost reports :Secret: I hope it's soon.

Happy new years everyone!

Thien
You've had a great year in the surf in 2012 Thien. Time to step up and beat all your PB's in 2013. :Big Grin:
Keep your passion alive in the surf, that's what gives you the edge.

<This was his theory. He said that he think that in the past, he would work in front and stir up the fish, wake them up, get them interested and into a feeding mode, only to have me step behind him and get the fish, lol  I said “Really... are you serious…???” :???:He says yup and insists that I fish ahead of him all day. :!!!:>

LOL, Iv heard that exact same thing from cutbait more times then i can remember,,,,,,,,PRICELESS!LOL

J/K
WTG guys,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Gotta try that some day,,,,,,,,SWAT rules the surf!

TRAIL BLAZER
I can imagine all the bantering that goes on between the Bako Boys.
Congrats on the nice boat and I know we're going to see plenty of slayage from it in 2013.
Happy New Year to you & yours Scott. :Big Grin:

Those LCs rock Arthur and y'all crushed it out there on Sunday!
Thanks man... and good luck to you in the surf for 2013 Dave. I know you will do well out there.

I still can't get over how nice each of those lc's turned out. The artist is very talented indeed!
It must have felt great finally getting to test out the hardware:Cool:
Congratulations on another successful outing!
Happy belated birthday SP Dan and Mike and congrats on the beautiful birthday-butt!
Way to take the lead!
Thanks for another great report and happy new years! Can't wait to see what catches the new year will bring!

-Daniel
Daniel, New Year, time for a new challenge between you and Thien.
I've enjoyed seeing how far you and Thien have progressed in the surf this year.
Keep up the good work out there and I can foresee a "special" challenge coming to you two sometime this year...

Well, another year in the books, Arthur, and bones, bantering with each other, trying to out guess the other lol. May need to try the "Alabama LC rig" so they have too many choices, and would definitely get some giggles out of Bones "your throwing a $100.00 rig there Mikey?" I have a theory, that Santa Barbara will be on fire this year on the butts, so might give the dynamic duo a run for their money. looking forward to time spent with the gang in the near future, and hoping all have many bent rods in the year to come.

nice looks like you guys had a blast
:)
The Alabama LC Rig... a great way to lose multiple LC's, lol
I really hope that the Halibut bite turns on in the Northern region in 2013 Mikey. I think I've only ventured up there maybe 2-3 times in 2012.
Thanks for everything Mikey, for all you have shared and taught not only myself, but to other S.W.A.T. members as well. You are truly the Yoda of Fishing. :Envious:
Looking forward to seeing you and the rest of the Santa Barbara S.W.A.T. Brothers at the next gathering. :Big Grin:
Can't wait to try your world famous Clam chowder.

Great report and pics as always. Hope all the SWAT members have a great 2013. First class crew :Thumbs Up:
Thank Rob, wishing you the best of luck on and off the water in 2013 also my friend.

Awesome Commander, nice Flatty Bones. We did great on the Perch action in Malibu last weekend as well.
Happy New Year to you and SWAT.
Yeah Sokha, Binh told me all about it... a 16" BSP! :EyePop: That's one of my goals in the surf this past year is to catch a 16"+ Perch... failed.
You guys did great in your first full year in the surf... and the best is yet to come. :Big Grin:
Happy New Year bro.

So there she goes..... 2012 down in the books and what a season it was for me. Even though the fishing wasn't consistant throughout the year ...... I seemed to be at the right place at the right time more often than not this year.I was able to drag enough legal flatties up on the sand to hold the lead on the SWAT leaderboard and I was able to stick my PB flattie as a bonus. The WSB bite I was fortunate enough to stumble upon also netted me a personal best count on legals along with my biggest to date. Last but not least I also caught my PB 16" barred surf perch.
The cherry on top so to speak of course was the "Hunting Giants IV" event. The way my team came together was AWESOME and exceeded my expectations in every way. You guys and gals were and ARE the best!

2012 is gone forever but the memories will last me a lifetime. Even though I always say that fishing is A LOT of luck I also have to say that if Arthur had not set up a little friendly competition between the SWAT team members I probably would have not been so motivated to push myself to the limits in order to find certain AO's that held fish that were willing to go through a complementary lip piercing and a quick photo session.

I can only hope that 2013 holds just as many adventures for the members of the FNN and my SWAT brotherhood. A special thanks to everyone who has wished me a happy birthday and of course to Arthur.
Arthur my friend....... I am blessed with your friendship. Your enthusiasim both on the sand and in your personel life is always inspiring.

I could go on forever but as I write this I'm a little on edge..... My daughter is expecting her baby at any moment.... YEAH THAT'S RIGHT....... I will officially be a grandfather in what I've been told could be a few hours to a few days so grab onto your seats folks......GRANDPA BONES is going to ROCK 2013 and it's going to be even better than last year.
Like I always tell my kids.....
Dream BIG and maybe BIG things will happen. Dream small and the odds are.....Only small things will happen.

May everyones BIG DREAMS come true in the NEW YEAR!

Ha ha ha! ...You guys and your............................"Mojo"..."Smojo"..........................call it what you will!
You (2) two are definitely a part of an elite group within our SWAT Brotherhood ranks! "SUPER STARS"! :Big Grin:

I happen to know by first hand experience....that when the two of you "SOLDIERS" get together on a beach......some serious fishing competition between the famous SWAT Brotha's is about to be unleashed on the unsuspecting enemy!
I've had the pleasure to fish with both of these fine men, and to watch them dissect an entire beach from end to end is truly something to observe!
Of course.....fishing with you guys also allows me to take my fishing skills to the next higher level.......I thank you for that!

I want to thank both of you for your on-going friendship and support through out this past year......and of course for all of the blessed memories that we all shared this past 2012 season! I had a blast......thank you!

Another awesome session down in the books.
I've also considered whether or not being in front or behind a fellow member makes a difference or not.
Does the lead person "bring the fish in"? or does it not matter?
Well, to bring Mike's theory into action I began to remember memorable fish caught behind another angler during some of our sessions together.
I happen to remember our big gathering in LBC, where 10+ S.W.A.T members were in the surf at the same time. We were all working North and I believe I was the 3rd to the last person heading in that direction. That means 7 other people were ahead of me, which also means a whole lot of LC's & Crocs were being "presented" to our little friends in the water. I ended up catching the only fish of the day, by luck I suppose, a short 10-15" hali. I think Arthur might have a legit point when he says that if you are meant to have a good day, you will. Or if the skunk is in the cards, you'll get the skunk. Interesting stuff.

So next time I head out with the guys, I'm going to stand behind Arthur and in front of Mike, this way I get the best of both worlds. :Big Grin:

What happened to your Redskins Arthur?

So next time I head out with the guys, I'm going to stand behind Arthur and in front of Mike, this way I get the best of both worlds. :Big Grin:

What happened to your Redskins Arthur?
I remember that day well Frank... lots of sticks in the surf, not enough fish.
Nice job pulling the Rabbit out of the hat. :Envious:
The highlight of my day was watching Roberto go ballistic over the phone with AAA. :Big Smile:
Hope you had a nice New Year my friend and looking forward to hitting the surf with you again sometime soon... If not, at the S.W.A.T. gathering next month. :Big Grin:
And about the Redskins... Shanahan should have put in the back-up QB earlier... Oh well, we had a good run... and at least we beat the Cowgirls, lol
