Is there a proper way to hook live smelt as bait?

Nose hook through bottom and upper lip?

Through one lipe?

Tail?

side ways?

Sideways nose hooked. I put a big treble in the butt when drifting for Hali's.
Nose hook only you really have to wait and let it take it. 15 seconds when shore fishing.

I prefer to hook them JUST beneath the dorsal fin. That way the fish doesnt have to swallow the whole smelt to get hooked.

You also hook the bigger fish this way, most fish strike the mid-section to stun. partially why wacky-rigging works so well!

How to bridle hook a smelt?

Or has anyone tired to hook it near the anus to target halibut from attacking underneath.
