Fishing Sun. 12-09-12, with Lal on his 18’ boat the “Rubber Ducky”. We launched out of Davies in Long Beach at 5:30 am, our beginning destination being the Palos Verdes Coast. We were thankful for no fog and there was little to no wind most of the day. As we exited the Harbor, the seas were grease calm, with only a small swell.
The tide had nearly reached a high of 5.6 feet at 6:30 am, as we arrived at our first spot that resulted in a productive early morning bite. The first couple of drifts did not disappoint, the Calico Bass were on the chew, and eagerly attacked a falling plastic lure, or a slow wind off the bottom. The current was outstanding, and pushed the boat along at a rapid, but manageable rate.
We had a good flurry of fishing for the Sand Bass at the end of our drifts. I caught this 3.75 pound Sandy on the fall after getting picked on the wind and free spooling, and then the big Bass inhaled the Plastic Lure.

The Calico and Sand Bass put on a show until about 9am and then the current died, and so did the Bite! We had released over 30 Bass by this time, with a 60/40 mix of Calico and Sand Bass. We also caught Lingcod, Johnny Bass, Sculpin, Cabazon, and Reds!
Lal decided to do an exploratory trip further up the line. He took a look at a variety of rocks and structure spots, where we had a decent pick on more Calico and Sand Bass and then picked away at a variety of Rockfish, Reds, Coppers, Johnny Bass, Starries, Lingcod, Cabazon and Sculpin. We caught another dozen Mixed Bass until slack tide at the low at 12:36pm. Myself with a decent size Calico Bass:

According to the GPS we were over 21 miles north of the launch ramp. We worked our way down the line and back to the harbor, and caught a few more fish, before we called it a day at 1:30pm. The wind was maybe 2-3 knots in the morning and might have reached 9 knots when we entered the Harbor.
We ended the day with well over 40 mixed Bass, all released and 20 Rockfish Critters, most released. A 60+ fish day!
BTW- Both Lal and I got smoked today. Lal’s big fish tore drag off his 22 pound outfit, and unbuttoned. My big fish was unfortunately hooked on my 12 pound outfit and he rocked me, after I got him off the bottom about 5-6 cranks with huge head shakes and violent thrashing from side to side! Bummer!
