Fishing Wednesday 11-28-12, with Bill Fisher, on his 18’ Trophy, “Toad Hall”. We arrived in Las Salinas, where Bill slips his boat at 6:00am,and exited the harbor into fairly calm seas, with some small swells.

We headed out to the kelp beds to make bait to supplement our frozen squid supply. Made a dozen mixed Spanish and Green Mackerel and continued out to some of Bill’s deep water spots near the Finger Bank.

The first couple of drops between us resulted in catching only Bocaccio, and within less than a half hour we had caught more than a limit, however, we successfully released most of them. Looking for some Reds and Lingcod, Bill ran to some other numbers.

Now this is where we came across the beast? Both Bill and I had numerous fish hooked and then stolen in depths of nearly 300 feet. We would a hook a Rockfish and begin our assent and within seconds our drags would be screaming. We never could stop whatever it was, a big black? Didn’t think it was a shark, our lines were not shredded, not a seal, it never surfaced with a fish? First it would happen to Bill and then to me, never at the same time, so only one beast. Even when we moved a ¼ mile away the beast returned, and we never saw a seal? Later in the day in the shallows a seal got on us and stole a few rockfish, and I lost several lures. Of course this time it surfaced and slapped the bounty on the surface, displaying its pleasure at achieving a cheap meal.

We picked away at a variety of Rockfish, a Couple of Coppers, several good size Starries, one Red, a 24” Lingcod and plenty more Bocaccio. Sure is a shame they are nearly extinct?

Myself with our biggest Red of the day:

We moved into shallower water for more of the same. Unlike our previous couple of trips, the action in the shallows was rather slow, so we moved back out to deeper water. The quality of fish improved with bigger Bocaccio, a few more Reds and Coppers, and several nice Lingcod:

My first big Lingcod:

A monster Bocaccio:

My second Big Lingcod:

A combo picture, can you believe the size of the mouth on that bucket mouth?:

Another Lingcod picture:

Bill sees some birds working off in the distance and we go to check it out. As we pull up on the herd of birds, we see jumping bait and a few good sized boils. We also metered a ton of bait. Bill and I grabbed our Mega Bait lures and tossed them out, and while I was winding my jig in, Bill hollers I’m bit! Sure enough his line starts pealing out. The Yellowtail puts up a good fight, as Bill follows the fish from side to side. Finally the fish is at color and Bill guides it into range as I stick it with the gaff.

Now getting Bill to let me take a picture of any of the fish he has caught is often a challenge, but not this time:

We chased the birds around for a while, but no more Yellowtail were spotted or hooked. At least I’m not sure as I did reel in a knockoff Lucanus lure and got bit way up in the water column, only to have it break my hook? We finished off the day in the shallows with mixed results. Still it was great day of fishing, with once again excellent conditions. A deep marine layer until 10am and then Father Sun blessed us the rest of the day. The winds were calm for the most part, with a gust here and there in the early afternoon, but soon backed off. .At 2:00 pm we called it a day.

Cleaned the fish outside the harbor, and stopped at Charlie’s for some fish and shrimp tacos to go, before heading off on my long drive home to Diamond Bar. Otay Mesa was said to be a 1 hour and 10 minute wait at the border. Tecate 10 minutes, so I headed off to Tecate at 4:10 pm. It took only 9 minutes to cross the border at Tecate.
.
I pulled into my driveway at 7:45 pm, a bit tired from the 3.5 hour long trip home.

Bill, you always put us on the fish, shallow or deep, you find the biters. I had a blast once again, thanks so much for the invite, and fabulous hospitality. What a fun day on the big pond, can’t wait to do it again!
Hook up!
