11/22/12

Decided to get in a short fishing session before having to prepare for Thanksgiving dinner. Met up with Thien(bloox8) in the morning and headed out by 5am. We originally planned to head to Long Beach to try for some halibut and do some bass fishing, but as we were talking and catching up during the ride, we absent-mindedly got onto the onramp for the 101. We decided to just head north instead of turning back to fish for some perch and maybe a halibut or maybe even an off chance striper:Secret:

Today ended up being another all-perch day. Catching these pig perch were definitely a blast but we will probably be trying out other areas in pursuit of other species:Wink: That being said, we arrived to some intimidating conditions. It was very dark and foggy when we first got there, and when we got to the shoreline, there were big waves crashing and white water surging everywhere! When we got into the water, the current was strong I lost my footing a few times but we fished on. I got the first hit and landed a huge perch. It was just shy of 16.5" (my last pb) and gave us a big boost of confidence despite the conditions. I threw the lc and Thien experimented between the lc, spoon, and dropshot. The bite and size of the fish were consistent and it was a fun and successful outing.

The surfers started to come in and the bite was starting to slow down. As we were making our last few casts, I got hit by a very hard-fighting fish. It felt like it had to be either a really big perch or some other species so I was excited to see what it was. It ended up being my new PB Perch at a fraction of an inch under 17":Big Grin: Unfortunately, the fish really swallowed to lc pretty deep and its gills had been mangled by the last treble hook. It was bleeding profusely from its gills and did not survive... I felt horrible knowing that they rarely reach this size and that the largest perch I had ever even seen was going to meet its fate like this. It was a bittersweet catch and I ended up bringing the fish home for Thanksgiving dinner. I was bummed at first, but I am very thankful to have been able to catch this fish. It was large enough for everyone to try a portion and my parents and relatives really enjoyed it:Smile:

All other fish were quickly and successfully released. I only took pictures of the first and last fish caught, which were coincidentally the two largest.

More giant BSP !! It's nice to know that those size fish are out still there, great catch. Even though it didn't make it, the fish was put to good use.

Funny you should mention the red treble hooks Thien. I was fishing an LC with a red treble tail hook today there and they were all over it at greylight. Every one of the perch were hooked on the tail hook. As the red plating wore off I started to get less hits and then nothing.....Who knows but I'm making sure that my tail hook is brand new every time I go hunting perch zilla at that AO from now on!

I've been testing the red treble hook ever since about a month ago. I've been using an lc with red trebles vs thien's lc without red trebles and have been hooking into much more perch than him on our recent outings. I'm almost certain that the red trebles make the difference:Wink:

It definitely made a great addition to the Thanksgiving feast:Smile: It's nice knowing that there's still a good number of big ones even with the increased fishing pressure thats been going on over there.

I won't be able to fish for the next month or so but i'll be sure to let you know the next time we head out!
