Perch on Steroids and a New PB!

I'll keep this report short. All fish caught were monster perch and one snagged leopard shark (all released).

Hit an area up north with Thien (bloox8). We knew this area held lots of perch but we decided to try it out since Thien had landed a big hali there in the past. This area is all one huge stretch of sandy beach. We were out fishing by 6am and on my third cast, my lc gets a good hit :Big Grin: This fish is fighting pretty hard but sporadically! I had a feeling it was a good sized perch. When I beached it, I could see it was a huge perch!:EyePop: It taped out to a solid 16.5" and a new PB for me! After that, we worked the long stretch of beach only for more perch. No halibut today but the perch at that location were averaging 15" I kid you not! They were pretty fun to catch since it was a steady bite. We hit three more locations and Thien managed a small leopard shark. We caught more perch at the other locations but they were not nearly as massive as the ones from the first.

Hopefully, I can make it back this weekend and try to beat my 15 1/2" PB. :Razz:

That perch looks like a sand crab wrecking machine, nice job!! The big perch at Jalama Beach and San Quintin have similar facial characteristics.

Nice report. These perchies were no joke. They went on drag runs, swam parallel to the beach, and everything! Daniel thought he had something big, other than a perch, a few times and hollered for me to come over :LOL:

That area was the PB spot, but the whole stretch up from that spot was hot. It was a fat, aggressive perch only area. Probably because there was hardly any Sandcrabs. I don't think I even saw any.

I know where I'm going in the AM !! Just came from BPS in Rancho and I need to babtize my new waders and a few new lures on the UL setup. Ya know Daniel......being that your PB perch was only 1/2" off the IGFA record .......I would be sure to hit that place hard during the spring breeding season when they are really agressive and fat. The gene pool in that area has always been good. Keep up the great work and props on the release bro. You just beat my PB BSP by 1" and some people might think that is not much. Considering that is just about as big as they come......Your fish is a BEAST!

There HAS to be a 18" out there somewhere don't ya think?

Sure there is...I got one yesterday! Oh wait, I thought you said 8". That was my whopper of the day...other than the two 12-15lb. wiggles that hit the crack. :LOL:

I caught the PB fish right at the spot where Thien got his hali. I would say that area was the hotspot but the bite was also spread out down the beach. Hope you get some time to fish and goodluck upping your PB! Maybe you'll pull out that 18incher:LOL:

It would be amazing to see someone pull out an 18inch surfperch from that location. I hope the gene pool there stays good or i'll have to search for some new perching grounds :Neutral: Goodluck out there!

Thanks, robert! For catching a bunch of perch when looking for butts, it was really fun, and i'm definitely not complaining with a new pb! These were the biggest bunch of perch I have ever caught, and three of the perch I caught that day beat my old pb!
