With the HG4 Event officially in the books, there’s no better way to wash off all the stress that comes with planning the biggest surf fishing gathering ever, than in the surf itself.

Lieutenant Bones called me Saturday night and said, “We’re hitting the surf tomorrow. I’ll be at your house at 5:00am, you pick a spot, I’ll drive…” I haven’t hit the surf in months. Too busy with work, planning for HG4, and taking care of life’s “other” more pressing matters. Turn on my laptop, did a quick check of the conditions… Wow, major tidal movement, flat swells, full moon… whatever, we’re going no matter what. I decided on an A.O. that best fit the conditions and off we went… whatever happens, happens... :!!!:

Mission Data:
Duration – 6:30am to 10:30am

A.O. – Classified

Conditions: Rapid incoming tide, 1-2 ft swells, 8-10 second intervals, calm conditions, water temperature approximately 68 degrees, clear skies, light offshore wind, moderate salad, excellent water clarity, heavy baitfish presence.

Techniques: Bones – Throwing FM110 LC (Cherry Candy Pearl pattern), Drop shot 5” White Ice Zoom Flukes. Wingnut – Throwing Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110SP (Sexy Aji pattern).

Fish Count: All released.
Bones – (4) Halibut 16”, 19”, 20”, 23” Legal. (1) Yellow Fin Croaker, (1) Barred Surf Perch, (10+) Smelt
Wingnut – (3) Halibut 16” 18”, 25” Legal. (4) Calico Bass, (10+) Smelt

The bite was off the hook at grey light, as we hit the surf and saw baitfish scattering everywhere. :EyePop: We were getting hit and hooking up on just about every other cast for the first 15 minutes or so… too bad they were all Torpedo sized Smelt. Once the Smelt vacated the area, we started hooking up with the desired species. The surf was full of life and the water clarity was great. We saw so many Shovelnose, Rays, Leopard Sharks, Perch and schools of mega-sized Corbina cruising the shallows. We spooked quite a few short Halibut also. I saw some type of Shark, maybe a Soup Fin or Seven Gill about 5-6 ft long, silver & gray in color, scatter a school of Corbina right in front of me, it made a quick u-turn when it saw me and shot straight back out. My heart skipped a beat, lol. Leopards don’t bother me, but that was quite a surprise. We fished hard until the high tide pushed us up against the rocks and it was getting a little dangerous. Called it around 10:00am and headed for brunch.

I haven’t been fishing much lately and it felt great to have a successful mission on my first trip back in the surf.
Mike, had a great time sharing the sand with you my brotha. See, I didn’t suck the fishing mojo out of you after all, hahahaha

Thanks again to all that came out to join us for the Hunting Giants 4 gathering.
HG5 will be even bigger and better!

Have a great week everybody! :Big Grin:

Arthur (Wingnut)

Things I’ve learned in life, so far...

I've learned that we don't have to change friends, If we understand that friends change.

I've learned that something that you do in an instant, can give you heartache for life.

I've learned that you should always leave loved ones with loving words, it may be that last time you see them.

I've learned that either you control your attitude, or it controls you.

I've learned that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you are down, will be the one who helps you get up.

I've learned that sometimes when I am angry, I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

I've learned that just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them too, doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

I've learned that it isn't always enough to be forgiven by others, but sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.

I've learned that sometimes the people that you love most in life, are taken from you too soon.

I've learned that you can't make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved, and the rest is up to them.

I've learned that no matter how much I care, some people just don’t care back.

I've learned that it takes years to build up trust, and just seconds to destroy it.

I've learned that it's not what you have in life, but who you have in it, that counts.

I've learned that you can keep going, long after you think you can't.

I've learned that there are people who cares for you dearly, but just don't know how to show it.

I've learned that even when you feel you have nothing left to give, someone you care about cries out and you find some way to help.

I've learned that our backgrounds and circumstances may have influenced our lives, but we are responsible for who we become.

Here are some photos of our fun day.

Did some light hiking down to the spot in the dark.

Hi ya Commander!

I was happy to receive your text and the up dates of all of Poseidon's gifts .... both you and Mr. Bones had a nice and relaxing day!
The Man above knows.... how much the both of you gave of your selves .....and so when it comes to giving to others....you guys had gone way beyond the norm.

I am very proud of the both of you...for being the kind of men that you are. You walk your talk and lead by example!
After giving so much....you guys did deserve a nice relaxing day together.... full of nothing but rippin' lips and good laughs!

I don't believe that I could have picked a better AO than the one you fished at!
That's a beautiful spot and it is definitely a gift from the Man above for all of us to enjoy!

Peace my brotha,
PS.... That's one toad of a Calico! :EyePop:

Okay, so, you and Mike take a few months off from the surf to take care of lifes more pressing matters, plan, coordinate and pull off the biggest and best Hunting Giants to date and you two go out and pick up right where you two left off! Amazing!

Both of you deserved to have a day on the beach to relax and just looking at the pictures you guys were able to do that and bring some impressive catches to the sand. Great job both of you. You both deserve more epic days and I'm sure there will be plenty to come!:Thumbs Up:

Arthur & Mike,

You 2 deserved some time on the battlefield together after pulling off the amazing HG4. :Group Hug:

All I can say is a beautiful AO, Nice variety of quality fish that place has to offer and as always a great report! I remember busting my Hali-Cherry there with the 2 of you on that great day a few years back to gain my entry into "SWAT". :Fishing Hole:

Also recognize that booth for lunch and the day Mike's face turned a darker shad of red than his hair when asked how his "Ribeye" should be cooked!

Well deserved day off from all of the planning of the event all the while dealing with other life changing events going on out there! :My Two Cents:

Can't tell you how glad I am to see that you two got out there after all the hard work you put in for HG4. Well earned time out there and well earned rewards for going out there. I just wish I were with you guys...not so much to fish, just to hear you two jab at each other. Almost as entertaining as Trolly rolling around in the surf...well, almost.

Way to slay guys! Keeps me wanting to go out there and get some myself!

Ahhh...YES....Here I am...LOL
Finally made it home after being kidnapped by my GF over night! It was just like good old times brotha. You were on calico FIRE with that new LC pattern Arthur. I didn't know what to do....FISH or sit down and watch the Wingnut show! I could tell you needed to beach some fish after seeing so many folks hit the surf at HG IV and having to pack up and head out of town. It took us all of maybe 1 minute to decide to drag our butts to the AO and I was pumped. When the smelt attack lit us up at first it was a great beginning and also a great ending with that toad calico. Done by 11 and a great feast to complete the day....Doesn't get any better that that. Hey....... You didn't count my YFC....LOL

We gotta get back out there before mother nature and Poseidon conspire to give us cabin fever. Thank god we don't live on the east coast....Give me a little earthquake every decade or two here in Cali..... Hurricanes.....Now that's another story:ROFL:

Yeah, that Calico was pretty decent... I do recall you also caught a beauty at that A.O. last year.
Our legal Halibut count is pretty pathetic this year so far... At least I have an excuse, I don't fish enough, what's your guy's excuse??? lol
With that said, I think we're going to have a strong Fall bite.
Hopefully, I'll see you this weekend... still trying to make my way back into town...

Awesome report Commander !!!
Looks like you and Bones had a GREAT day.
Good, not great... but we'll take it. :Envious:

That was a perfect fishing day, thanks for sharing those hog calicos!!!!!
Conditions was just about perfect and we took advantage of it. :Big Grin:

Steve http://planetsmilies.net/person-smiley-1122.gif
That A.O. have certainly been kind to us over the years Steve. :Big Grin:
I got my PB Halibut there, you and Marc also got your PB Hali there I believe...
As for the lunch A.O., that wasn't The Outback Steakhouse, it was at one of our favorite post surf stops... Sizzler! Gotta love that all-you-can-eat salad bar. :Envious:
Great to see you at HG4 my friend.

Arthur & Mike

Glad to see you two out fishing the surf for those big dog that roam the surf. That makes life time memory!
Thanks.
Ramiro..
Thank Ramiro, hope you find some time to get out there yourself bro.
Good to see you at HG4 buddy.

Arthur, Mike, Great Show. :UDaMan:

Just like Terry said " You two go out and pick up right where you two left off! " So True!
Nice quality fish, well except for the Smelt:LOL:

Glad to see your day was as good as mine. However your lunch had to be a lot better.
Till next time

WWO
Our day was as good as yours? Where's your report soldiers?!?
Hey, they were Smelt, but they were quality Smelts!
Thanks for your help at HG4 my friend.

Don
Whenever Mike and I fish, I usually do most of the jabbing... especially when he doesn't catch much. :Neener Neener: He blames me for stealing all of his fishing mojo whenever we fish together, lol. Trolly, well lets just say that S.W.A.T. has a Court Jester now...
It was great seeing you and the family at HG4 Don, and thanks again for all you've done for the event, good times! :Big Grin:

It's always fun reading your reports! I'm glad to see you guys back out on the surf and catching nice fish like always :Big Grin:
and thank you for the words of wisdom

-Daniel
Thanks Daniel, refresh my memory again on what my offer is, for the contest between you and Thien...?
Keep up the nice work out there! :Big Grin:

After this report I'm really wishing I had won 1 of the guided fishing sessions from you Arthur. That last calico is huge! By chance does Tess give cooking lessons...? If my girl cooked a meal that looked like that, she probably would have gotten a ring already, hahaha
You don't need a guide trip from S.W.A.T., you're doing great on your own.
As for Tess, she DOES have a ring and Jason (Jaysuuun) is the LUCKY one. :Envious:

You picked a good day to come back out and play guys! Like seeing you smile like that, know Lynn does too. The perchin was WFO up here too that day, but no love from the flat ones. Looking forward to our SWAT gathering in the north country. Mikey
Got your message on your productive day up North Mikey. I hope this past weekend is a positive sign of more good things to come this Fall season.
We've decided to come to your neighborhood for the next S.W.A.T. gathering in February. Looking forward to having the S.W.A.T. Northern Brothers show us how to catch monster Perch.
Great to see you at HG4 Yoda, and your smoked Tuna is fast becoming legendary... :Envious:

You definitely have these two muchachos tuned in, Bachi...! So right on.. Glad you gave the edge to Trolly.. He's in a flippin' league all of his own..
Thanks for coming to HG4 and for your Support Sid. When you're done travelling the world to fish, maybe you can squeeze in a trip with us here locally.

Definitely glad to see the great reads up here again but I am stoked to see ya'll out there fishing again after all that work. Great job you two!
Thanks man, it was the perfect way to relax and unwind...

Fantastic report and great fish! You guys put on one heck of Derby, and I really appreciate your dedication and generosity! Thanks again and have a great season ahead.
Thanks Frank, really good to finally meet you at HG4. Maybe our paths will cross in the sand sometime soon...

Glad to see the two of you got out and put the hurt on the enemy! You guys deserved a day on the water to yourselves after putting on such an epic event like HG4! I must say that event was the most fun I've had in the surf. Thank you again!
Thank you Dan... good to see you having fun at HG4, that's what it's all about. :Big Grin:

Welcome back commander, we missed your reports.
That last calico is a toad. :EyePop:
And I miss writing them...
See you Saturday Vince.

Nice job man. Your posts always inspire me and give me a little kick in the rear to get out on the water. I was telling my wife that we're going to buy TWO fishing licenses next year and I'm going to get her in on this action (I haven't gotten into waders just yet though hahahaha).
Good luck getting your wife to join you, that would be great to see another surf fishing couple out there. :Big Grin:
Waders are nice, but we know lots of people who hit the surf without them, even in the Winter time.

Wow…. you and Mike are no joke. I am glad you guys finally got time off to go do what you guys do best. And that is catch BIG fish  You guys definitely deserve the time off, especially after planning such an amazing and fun event for the community. Thank you both again.

Those are some nice calicos! I still don’t understand how you managed to land so many of those beasts. I have yet to cross out Calicos on my surf list.

Thank you for your words of wisdom and your awesome report. It was a very fun read and I will be waiting for your next.

Thien
Actually, we're full of jokes Thien...
As for the Calico, we've caught them just about everywhere... some at the exact A.O. where you are fishing.
Keep fishing that new A.O. that you and Daniel have been hitting, plenty of Calico there. :Secret:
Stop wading out to retrieve your LC's, just use stronger line, lol.

Ridiculous, you guys didn't even miss a beat. :Envious:
Nice legals for the SWAT top brass and Art, that is a sick Calico bro. :EyePop:
Can't wait until the SWAT gathering of Eagles, part 2.
Sorry we missed ya at HG4 Phuong, next year.
The S.W.A.T. gathering will be a nice change of pace for everybody.
See you Saturday bro.

Gotta Go......evening bite ya know!
That was really fun Mike, just like old times when we were killing them in the surf.
Damn, I think that if those Smelt would have left us alone at grey light, we probably would have connected with a few nicer fish.
All in all, a fun day and I enjoyed hanging out with you again bro. See ya soon!

Just to set the record straight... Arthur's girl, aka Iron Chef, is about 50lbs lighter and super hotter than I am. :Envious:

Tess is currently engaged to this guy (Jaysuuun)

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/Wingnut%2011/HG422.jpg

With that out of the way... nice fishies!!! That calico is HUGE. Makes me want to get back out there. It's been a lonnnngggg time since we got on some big fish and I keep seeing/hearing about all the legals we're missing out on. As always, you guys are my inspiration. We're gonna try to get out there sometime before the end of the year, hopefully! The S.W.A.T. couple needs to make a comeback lol.
Jason is indeed a lucky guy... I wish the Iron Chef can fish as well as she can cook, lol. As a matter of fact, I wish that she would fish at all.
It was really great to see you guys at HG4 and thank you for all of your help at the event Tess. :Thumbs Up:
Congrats again on the engagement and I'm sure your wedding in "Paradise" will be everything you've dreamed of... :Big Grin:

Awesome job Arthur and Mike! Those are some impressive fish as always. :UDaMan: SWAT never ceases to amaze me.

-Peter
Thanks Peter, I'm still looking for that elusive saltwater Striper... :Envious: Thanks for the video.  :Secret:

I bet those fish didn't miss you at all when you were gone bro.
Amazing session for the two of you, congrats. :Not Worthy:
I'll see you Saturday at the funeral.
The enemy was getting way too comfortable at that A.O. brother Binh. We kinda stirred them up a bit.
See you Saturday...

That's a SICK day boys. Nice work!! Maybe I should fish with you guys instead of Bachi??? HAHA- Just kidding Don - I wouldn't abandon my post as your wingman.37704

Having said that though, I look forward to the opportunity to wet a line with you guys.

- Nate
I'm sure we will have the chance to fish together sometime soon.
Don was supposed to be my Wingman the first time we fished together, but I ended up beng his Wingman...
He got two White Sea Bass that morning. :Envious:
Thanks for coming to the HG4 event and for all of your contributions Nate.

If you have strong line, at least #14 or better, you have a decent chance of getting the LC back if you do this...
Apply slow and steady pressure as you are pulling on the line. If it's a clean snag with one barb, the steady pressure will bend the shank of the hook and free the lure. If the lure is snagged with multiple hooks, or wrapped around mussels covered structure, your chances of retrieving the lure decreases drastically.
I lost one yesterday...

Bonus Report!

S.W.A.T. Morning Surf Session with a few of my Brothers. Sunday 11/4.

Did a quick morning session on Sunday with three of my S.W.A.T. Brothers... Bones, Murrieta Angler, and SP Dan.

Near perfect conditions with crystal clear water, flat swells and no weeds. :Thumbs Up:
We caught a few, but nothing really worthwhile. A bit slow probably due to a lack of bait fish in the surf.
I lost a Toad in the grey light, took me deep into the kelp, didn't have my drag tight enough  ... free-spool my reel for a good 5 minutes going back and forth with the fish trying to get it loose and finally snapping off, losing my LC. Probably a big Calico.

We split up in the grey light with Robert and Dan attacking the North end of the beach and Mike and I the South end.
I didn't keep track of everybody's fish count, but I ended up with (2) Short Halibut, (2) Calico and (2) Yellow Fin Croakers.
We fished from 5:30am to about 10:00am.
It was so flat, at times, I thought I was fishing in Lake Pacific, lol

We were trying to see who could wade out the farthest... I WON! hahaha :Neener Neener:

The excitement for the morning was provided by Lieutenant Bones. Mike got rolled by a rouge wave that came out from nowhere, knocked him off his feet and filled up his waders... we all had a good laugh after he dragged himself to the beach. :Big Smile: I saw the wave coming, rushed forward and barely cleared it. It hit Mike squarely and took him down... sorry Mike, but that was too funny bro...
We decided to call it a day at that moment and head off to lunch. :Big Grin:

Mike, Robert and Dan... That was a lot of fun. I wish our fish count could have been better but I had a great time going into battle with you guys. :Group Hug:

Until next time... have a great week everybody.

Hi ya Arthur,

It was good to share the salt with you, Robert and Mike....once again! :Big Grin:

I looked over and I saw that you were on a huge bite, you were repeatedly walking backward up the beach and then forward into the surf with rod bent way over, trying to gain your line back. And so....as I was getting ready to run over to you and offer my assistance.......I then saw your line go slack.....dog-gone-it!:EyePop::Twisted::Sad:
I would have liked to have seen what it was that couldn't be landed by you!

PS.....it was amazing to watch you in action sir.....climbing all over and down in between the rocks and out to your arm pits in the salt....with no escape from the treacherous outsider........fully committed in the trenches and for the assault! Astonishing commitment sir.

Thank you for the good times and the great memories my brotha's!

Good Times for sure yesterday bro. It was alot of fun getting trashed by a wave right before we left. Anything to hear that loud laugh of yours Arthur. Just like the old days:ROFL:
I think I'm getting back into the swing of things with these recent hikes in and out of our more productive AO's. Have a new one mapped out for the AM if my fatherly duties will allow me to work it out. Tides look alot better with more water movement next week. What's up with this hot damn weather? I've got and end date in sight for a project I've been working on and right after that I'm going to hit a beach somewhere and toss a few L.C.'s into the surf and see what I can bring to the beach. Then I'm gonna hook up the Lund with the S.W.A.T. stickers on it and head out to an AO unknown.

It's always great to read about my S.W.A.T. Brothers hitting the surf and having a good time! Great job out there guys and I'll see you all soon.:Thumbs Up:

Arturo,
Great to see you, Mike and Dan again...
I know I can fish anywhere I want, but I just can't get that camaraderie feeling, fishing alone...
We managed to get some nice fish for the day, at that A.O., and I was sure we were going to land some legals.
But alas, it wasn't meant to be...:Rolls Eyes:
After getting the smelt, calico, YFC and short halibut, it was great to go and break some bread with you and Mike.
I didn't know I was so famished till the bread arrived...:Surprised:
Again, thank you so very much for picking up the tab. Next time it is on me... NO REALLY!!!
Afterwards I ended up going to San O, when I was done in Santa Ana, and ended up getting a BSP, a butterfly ray and a small bat ray...
That made 7 different species for the day on my part...:Envious:
I look forward to seeing all of you very soon.

Once again, great report Arthur. Looking at those pics make me smile man.
There were times walking to that AO was nerve wrecking, holding a flashlight on one hand and my lip gripper on the other in case anything ever poped out
The clarity on that water is insane, I remember last time I went there I took a shot of a lobster walking on the sea floor as it walked about 2 feet away from me, it was quite a sight. Great times!

SP Dan <"))><
Brother Dan, I got bit 3 casts into the grey light and landed a YFC, then a couple of casts later, a short Hali. About 10 minutes later the LC gets hammered and the fish got me wrapped around the boiler and kelp. I couldn't get it free... I would free spool my reel and the fish would run and take line but couldn't get free of the structure. I finally had to break it off, I was wasting precious fishing time.
I was fishing hard that morning, those boilers were a bit tricky to negotiate, but the rewards are often worth it. :Envious:
It was great sharing the sand with you and hope we can do it again soon!

I'm ready for FALL....LOL

TIME TO BREAK OUT THE SAMMY'S FOR SOME TOP WATER ACTION.....WOW !!
Dude, that was pretty comical... I knew that you would be in trouble when I rushed that wave and saw that you didn't move with me.
Good times bro, good times! :Big Grin:

Arthur, Not much beats a day on the water with Good friends!

Here's a quick bonus report from last Sunday 11/11 and Veteran's Day Monday 11/12.

Got together with Mike (Bones), Don (Bachiboy) and Peter (PTN) on Sunday for a recon mission.
Conditions was a little rough and the bite was quite slow. Just a bunch of Smelt and a couple of Birds.
I entertained Don & Peter by diving under a couple of waves, lol

Then on Monday, I headed back out again with Peter (PTN) and John (Nipple Twister). Crazy tide swing and rough conditions. Peter managed a couple of Perch, John scored a nice 28" Halibut and I got the big ol' Skunk. :Envious:

Really enjoyed hitting the surf for a couple of days with da boyz. Not too often that I get to fish for a couple of days straight.

Great fishing with you again Arthur! With all those birds and bait, you woulda thought one of us coulda got at least a short that day, but I guess the temperature drop really put those flatties off the bite. It was definitely a cold start that morning. It was great to fish with Mike and Peter too. We all kinda went our separate ways after our initial assault. Sorry I didn't get to chat with you guys more. Looking forward to getting in some more sessions with you guys soon!

Arthur,

Just curious though how Don measured the new species. Was that wing tip to wing tip or nose to tail?:Envious:

As you can see by the picture of me holding my prize, I made sure that the neck was extended to get a proper measurement. I used the length of my arm to gauge it at a clean 26 1/2", nose to tail.:LOL: J/K...I was just trying to keep that dang beak away from me. Man was that thing PISSED!

If SC beats Notre Dame tomorrow, that would make the year, I don't care how disappointing it has been...
Lane Kiffin needs to go!
Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving bro. I'm in town, but no time to fish...

I will respond as the wifey is sitting in the other room cheering with 5.22 seconds in the 4th!

Kiffin need to go?

As I rolled into the house this evening after a long 6 hr. drive from Pheonix I heard the wifey screaming like the house was on fire. I went into investigate the excitement to find out that SC had scored a TD and then was able to see it negated by some "Dumb *****$$$$$$$" running down towards the end zone calling Time Out disqualifing the TD! Lucky they did not stick him with a 12th man on the field! :Idiot::Idiot::ROFL::ROFL:

Just heard some really bad explitives and the channel changed to a "Murder Mystery" so I really do not need to investigate any further! :Bath:

Hope you all enjoyed your Turkey Day!
