I had the HONOR and pleasure of fly fishing LA Harbor yesterday with Guide Bill Matthews of Fly Time Guide Service. http://flytimeflyfishing.com/wordpress/ This gentleman is a pro at fishing the salt! He has a very well equipped boat set up with every small detail catering to the fly fisherman. His buddy John joined us too, I think just to show us all how it was done! John had the hot stick in the morning as he had CPR'd at least 5-7 by the time I caught my first! I think at one early point, he was 5 for 7! We left Cabrillo Launch in San Pedro around 6:30 just as day broke. It was quite windy and we were worried.

We motored a mile or two to Angels Gate and began fishing the outside. Our fears were soon laid to rest as the ocean did the same! It was a BEAUTIFUL day! I don't remember being hot or cold....It was perfect!

Did I mention Captain Bill is a great photographer too?! He took about ½ of these pics.

It didn't hurt that we hit the incoming tide perfectly either, and started catching kelp bass one after another. Well, at least John was. I finally caught my first fish, and then it was a steady pick as Cap'n bill expertly guided two fly fishermen along the wall pointing out lanes and targets and getting us unsnagged from kelp.

My largest fish came right up tight to the rocks and some kelp. That was a battle!

Final conservative tally for the three of us was over 20 kelp bass, over 20 calicos, and 1 mack-attack.

BILL KNOWS HOW TO CATCH FISH! He showed me some cool techniques, and effective strategies on catching fish at the wall. This is something I always struggled with. I think I caught more fish today on the fly that all of my conventional trips combined!

I had the best time! I needed an outing, and going out with Bill & John was like going out with family. He treat you with respect, teaches you in a non-threatening, encouraging way(something not all guides have the ability to do), and kept us rigged up and on the fish virtually the whole time.
Bill also provided some tasty food and beverages.

We used clousers of various colors throughout the day including some of my own ties.
