Caught a few small ones on the flies then I switched to a spinning rod casted out farther and caught some bigger ones

Good to see you made it out to the surf to catch a few fish. Its a nice change of pace from bass fishing once in awhile.

Nice job on the flyrod! Something I haven't braved yet. Gotta get a stripping basket set up first. Thanks for the report and eyecandy!

what do you throw, sinking or floating fly line? im really on the fence as to which works better in the surf. sinking lines get everything down deep enough... but floating lines give you such good visibility...

I was using floating line I figured if you have long enough leader the fly should get down on its own, I have not tried sinking so can't tell you if it makes a difference maybe the waves dont drag it in as easy but it's harder to cast? Hopefully someone can answer our questions here, floating does work tho

Sinking line is what the local surf guys up here use. A very large group of Fly Fisherman in the Santa Barbara region hit the beach often with the long sticks.
I've tried it and have only caught some BSP and 1 Smelt LOL.
