View Full Version : First Contribution Report: Surprise Halibut By-Catch

http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc484/ptfishing/10-23-12%20Striper/hatandLC_zpsaf136b1e.jpg

I decided to hit up my honey-hole for halibut armed with my Shimano Sedona 2500 paired with my 8'6 medium light Clarus. This was my surf setup that I decided to use to fish off the rocks but I wanted to use it to make sure I maintenanced the reel correctly. At HG4, I had conversations with Jonathan and JerryG from SWAT about many things of fishing but we talked about this one spot where we all had success with halibut. This coincidentally was my favorite spot to fish with the FM 110.

I did about 30 casts and pick up my first small halibut. Was about 7 inches so I didn't take a picture but I did bring my brother's GoPro and caught it on video although I'm still in the process of editing the videos.

I continue fan casting the areas while constantly moving and trying different speeds of retrieve. The GoPro battery dropped to one bar and I wanted to save it in case I did get into a big halibut so I powered it off UNFORTUNATELY...

Approximately 40 minutes after catching the first halibut, I get a big hit and hear a loud splash in the distance. In my head, I thought "Damn, snagged a big ray or shark" after I heard the splash and felt the weight off my rod. I realized it wasn't a ray because they usually fight like dead weight and I was feeling big, slow head shakes. After that, I eliminated it wasn't a shark because smooth hounds I've caught here don't feel this big and I knew it wasn't a Leo because those would do big, ripping drag burns. So I went back to thinking it could possibly be a bat ray and I wasn't in the mood to fight a ray and thought to cut the line. I was surprised my 20# braid didn't snap yet and I forgot I had my just opened LC in my favorite color attached so I decided to ride this beast until I got it in.

It was about 20 minutes in and I thought might as well tape this even if it is a big ray. I'll try to have the video posted up soon. There were some big drag burns here and there and I felt these long heavy head shakes. After about a 30 minute fight, I saw white and thought it was the underbelly of the ray, but I was soooo wrong. :Secret: Then I saw the body and top dorsal fin stick out and screamed "BIG WHITE SEA BASS" in my head :EyePop:. After I finally pulled it in, it wasn't a white sea bass, but it was a 40 inch salt water striped bass!!!! :Envious: I wanted to get it in real quick and pull the LC off and get this beautiful creature back but unfortunately it wouldn't revive and kept flipping upside down :Crying: I tried for 10 minutes CPRing it. I didn't get too many pictures or a measuring tape picture because I knew that a long fight like this would stress this fish so here are some snapshots from the video and 2 pictures off my iphone.
http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc484/ptfishing/10-23-12%20Striper/StriperwithLC_zps06da698d.jpg

I knew who would be the perfect people that would appreciate this fish and dropped it off to them. I rarely keep fish when I fish off the rocks or surf but couldn't let this fish go to waste. This striper was my first and surprisingly in saltwater. Jonathan talked about catching stripers here and I've heard of them being caught here but I never expected to ever catch one since I've fished here for over 2 years.
Here are some pictures of me holding this fish and kind of a scaling to see how big this was.
http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc484/ptfishing/10-23-12%20Striper/HoldingStriper_zps3ae8ca30.jpg
http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc484/ptfishing/10-23-12%20Striper/striperhandandLC_zps78c0637c.jpg

JerryG was talking about how the hooks on the LC aren't good enough and are too brittle. I've personally never caught a big enough fish besides a big butterfly ray that bent out my hooks or broke them until today. I agree with him now how these hooks should be better because losing that big fish is heart-breaking. Two broken back hooks with the third being bent the middle treble hook has one bent hook. This was just brand new 110 that I just used today and will be retired.
http://i1214.photobucket.com/albums/cc484/ptfishing/10-23-12%20Striper/brokenlc_zpsbf28a617.jpg

I don't know why I didn't take a picture of the fish with a measuring tape after but the fish was over 40 inches and weighed 31 lbs. I really do wish this fish would have survived because after looking up how old it possibly could have been made me even more upset.:Embarrassed:

To end on a better note, my parents anniversary is coming up soon on November 6th. My dad posted this on facebook today and it would be 37 years for them. I appreciate, love, and thank them for raising who I am today.

Thanks to FNN and everyone for their reports or I would have never got into LC fishing and been lucky enough to be chosen as a tester.

I bet that was one hell of a fight and one you'll never forget!
It's unfortunate that the fish didn't make it but you did all that was in your power.
Thanks for the report!

What an epic report Peter! It's funny how we were just talking to Jonathan and JerryG about stripers here and you catch this beauty only 3 days later. I am truly honored to get to fish with someone as dedicated and determined as yourself. You've definitely come a long way since we first started fishing together. Looking forward to many more epic trips with you. Congratulations my friend!

Way to go Peter!!!:EyePop: Most people can't say they've got a striper out of the surf much less one of that magnitude. That is a HUGE accomplishment! Thanks for the report and picts.

Congratulations!!!!

Hi ya ptn,

"Congratulations" on landing your new species and it just so happened to be the elusive Stripped Bass! :Big Smile: :Applause: WTG!
This is an extremely rare species to land in the salt and you can now be counted amongst the very few to have ever achieved such a feat in the surf! Welcome to the SB Club! :Thumbs Up:

Thanx Peter for the fantastic report and pic's!

I would like to personally welcome you to the FNN family and to commend you on your First Contribution Report!
You did a great job on reporting your SB session Peter! I hope to read many more reports from you in the near future with a lot more species that put your LC's to the rigorous test!

PS...I've personally beached 2 out of 3 Stripe Bass this year and had the same exact damage on all of my factory LC treble hooks. I now change out all of my treble hooks with Owner Tin coated 3X and 4X the strength hooks. It really hurt to have caressed my SB for 15- 20 minutes, finally getting the SB on the sand at the water's edge... having the fish in full view...just to have it come unbuttoned due to failed hooks from the hard fought battle.
Peter...I know, that you know ...what I am talking about here.

One's choice is to be either spooled by using a soft drag set or to tighten the drag down a bit and hope that the hooks or the line's test will withstand the force that a mature sea going Stripe Bass can and will apply to it.

You did a fantastic job landing this magnificent beast Peter! WTG! :Dancing Banana: You Rock soldier!

Flipping upside down means the fish has swallowed air directly in the stomach, caused by the fish being out of the water too long..

The only way to remedy this is to keep the fish submerged upright until it belches the air back out, which can take around 40 minutes.. Sometimes even longer.

Not really an option in the surf =(

No worries, OP. You tried. Beautiful fish, regardless!

Peter,

That is an awesome striper! I was excited when I caught mine out of the surf, but that fish could've made mine it's meal. Like Dan said, welcome to the SoCal saltwater striper club! Definitely a very rare catch, and major props on landing it. I actually think landing fish off the rocks is harder than the surf b/c you don't have the ease of pulling them in with a wave.

As long as the fish doesn't go to waste, there is no harm in not CPR'ing it, and that fish will provide some fantastic meals!

Thanks for the report, and look forward to reading more of them in the future!

Congratulations on an outstanding catch.. Well done Peter. To catch a striper in saltwater localy is a huge accomplishment but to catch a fish of that magnatude (31 lbs) is amazing. If you were fishing where I think you were fishing, I have been hearing rumors of (large) stripers being caught there for many years but I have never known of anyone who has actually caught one there until now.

Glad to see that despite being broken and twisted your hooks managed hold on to the fish. I have lost some some BIG fish due hook failures but I have yet to find a replacement hook that I am fully satisfied with. Heavy hooks kill the action of the lure resulting in less bites but on the other hand hooks that are too lite are more likely to tear, bend out, or break on big fish resulting in heavy losses. A rod with a soft tip and parabolic action definitely helps compensate for the hooks. Stripers are usually always schooled up so where there is one chances are there are more. Might be a good time to get back out there and get on another one while they are around.

Congratulations on the TOAD Striper Peter!! That is a true achievement to land a striper that size not many of us have even seen a striper that size in person let alone in the salt locally. It is insane that we were just talking about the big striper stories in that spot last weekend at the HG event. I feel that posting a report is not only about showing your catch and sharing techniques its about lighting a fire for the members on this board and lurkers to get off their couches and venture to your local grounds to try out your luck. It has definitely caught my attention I work about 15 min from that spot and have not fished there in about 8 months but ill tell you something I will be out there tomorrow after work ha ha. Thanks Bro.

You know stripers are schooling fish where there is one there is always another I would not doubt that there is a 50lber roaming the area. I am going to try to hit that spot in the dark one of these nights remember stripers bite great at night get my number from Daniel give me a ring if you hit up the spots in the evenings. Daniel told me that you invited him that day but he had other obligations I guess he missed out.

What beautiful fish!:EyePop:

Too bad it didn't make it after the battle, but at least it didn't go to waste. Congratulations on a fantastic catch, fish/memory of a lifetime.

Congrats to your folks on #37, same date as my daughter's b'day

You are very close. I'm sure if you've been to this spot you would know where it is right away. Trying to not blow up the spot as best I can by cutting out as much as I can but letting people enjoy the pictures

I don't fish N of King Harbor much, so if it is N, I doubt I've been there,
but have done some fishing at some river mouths.
Tried Dominguez channel (inner harbor) near the draw bridge, LA River area. Been kicked out of more spots than like to admit too. Lol
Harbor Park (Wilmington Drain) has a underground drain pipe that runs along the refinery and dumps into the Port at Yang Ming terminal in San Pedro. Can't be fished (too much security) but I did notice large oysters at low tide. Strange how they thrive at the end of a contaminated creek.

Very well done bro that is a very nice stripe bass! Also I like that color on our lucky craft lure and yes swap out the store hook with stronger ones,

That is the fish of a life time. Big stripers are famous for mashing smaller treble hooks, you displayed great skill in landing that fish. Stripers over thirty pounds are very very rare in southern Cal. As for killing it don't feel bad, there are many stripe bass in this world.

dudeeeeee, that thing is a beast. Congratulations on the beautiful catch!
I agree with what everyone has said about the hooks on the LC 110, swap them out and be prepared for the big fish like this one.
One again, congrats man.

Thank you iLLest!

dude thats fricken awesome

Thanks PB!

Yo Peter, congrats on the epic catch! That is one sweet fish! Those hooks don't look so good after hooking into a monster striper like that. LOL Maybe your team should develop a beefed up Terminator LC 110 model with 2X hooks. Thanks again to you and your crew for coming out to the HG event. It was a pleasure to have you guys out there.

Thansk Jason, it was my pleasure coming to HG4. Talking to them to see if they can beef up the hooks since that's one of the bigger complaints about the lures.

Congrats! Nice fish! Are your knees still shaking? Has the adrenaline rush wore off yet? Thanks for sharing my friend.

Raymond

Thank you Raymond. I still am excited about my catch to this day and lose some sleep just thinking about fishing :Big Grin:

Peter,

Congrats on the great catch of a life time from the surf, rocks, or what ever you consider it! How are you going to ever top this first report?

I am another believer that Poseidon rewards good people after giving forth what you gave to HG4!

As for the casulty? It happens now matter how hard we try to take care of the enemy we will both fight to the bitter end! Looks like many good meals to be enjoyed!

An amazing story and pics, Peter. The biggest striper I've caught in SCal was half that size...and from a lake. Sorry the big fella didn't make it, but glad it was appreciated by the folks who received it.
You finally made me a believer in changing out the stock hooks after seeing what that big dog did to them, though you wouldn't normally expect our tackle to be put to such a test. Do you know what the hook upgrade would be without effecting the bait's action?? A beautiful pattern on the LC as well...what's it named??
Thanks too for the pics and article on your parents. Hard to imagine our folks ever being that young. It's great to see you honor them in your post...good man.

Thanks sidified. I've put smaller owner trebles on them and even some bigger LC stock treble hooks on the 110's and they seem to still have the same action. Even removing the middle hook still catches fish. I've even had a mix between stock hooks and owner hooks on them and the action was the same. The pattern is Sexy Geisha Queen SD.
