Every year this is what i look forward too, my dad and i do our annual trip to somewhere new in the sierras. this year, we hiked up out of sabrina basin into the basin above it near the evolution group. these were some of the most beautiful lakes i have ever seen in the sierras and some of the most weirdly named, including fish gut lakes, hungry packer lake, topsy turvy lake, baboon lake, donkey lake, hell for sure lakes, and my favorite, dingleberry lake. tons of great fishing here, we caught tons of nice sized brookies with the occaisonal rainbow and a handful of hybrids. apparently up at schober lakes between blue heaven and bottleneck, which were about two miles and a thousand feet higher from us, some guy caught all sorts of goldens, none under 12 inches. We got all we could ask for, clear blue skies the whole time, only about 3 hours of smoke, beatiful full moon nights listening to the coyotes. no bear problems and no rain. hell the only bad thing we had the whole trip other than leaving was this group of college kids coming up and having to watch one swim in the lake in his speedo. needlessly to say it was funny when he came out with stage one hypothermia. anyways, ill just let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

The Wildlife:

*on a side note, we noticed the fish attacked more aggressively if we stripped the grasshopper fairly fast accross the surface. this caused me to theorize that we were possibly making our rubber-legged hoppers look like yellow legged frogs

Thanks for the report. It has been a long time since I have done a back country fishing trip. The pictures were awsome. That one with the yellow legged tree frog - really cool and looks like you caught some pretty brookies. One day I will get into the back country again. For the time being.... I'll live vicariously through the reports of those like you.

Campgrounds? We don't need no stinking campgrounds. Man this brings back memories. Back in '91 I was a young kid in the CCC. We did trail work in that very same area. Gawd I loved it. I was a kid that never did anything other than car camping before and here I was living out of a tent in the high sierras for four months. I never wanted to leave. thanks for the photos and the report. i gotta get me up in to the backcountry this year before the snows come!
