View Full Version : FishingNetwork.Net Hacked?

This is what pops up on Google when I search for Fishingnetwork.net using Chrome. Does this happen to anyone else?

http://i.imgur.com/na9hb.png

Furthermore, when I browsed the net at a university recently, the computers all popped up a warning stating "Warning: Possible Attack Site" whenever I went to FNN.

Anyone else have this?

I get the same thing from Google. Also from time to time my Trend Micro security stops me from going to the FNN home page. This is a good question...

Thank you! Glad it's not just me. Perhaps someone installed a script on the forum to spam odd stuff to search engines?

Just for kicks, try searching for the other socal forum, HookedUpSportfishing. Google gives me a little "Site may be compromised" warning with them.

Anybody can appear at the top of a search result. As long as you pay enough and are linked to all the search criteria, then you can appear at the top of the results.

100% yes. Probably a forum exploit.

I can see it RIGHT NOW if you use a user-agent switcher and set to Googlebot.

This is what Google cache (and me using the user-agent switcher) sees
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:Xbg9BWO-XxIJ:fishingnetwork.net/+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

Anyone that wants to see it can download this extension for Chrome

And create a user-agent string with "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)"

What these do indicate is that someone has compromised the forum, allowing them to inject their own tags or lines into an otherwise normal Google Search result. Here's a perfect description of this happening to other websites, probably as a result of messing with the .htaccess file.

Mods, why hasn't this been addressed? This is rather embarrassing.

Yup! Great find!
For those doubting that anything bad happened to the forum, read the following and tell me-is this what FNN usually should show up as with Google Searches?

13 years in this profession tell me this is probably more than some .htaccess hack
I can tell this is not just .htaccess hijacking by the way the code is inserted in the response.
The forum is compromised, possibly code altered on the server to achieve this.
I hope our FNN members don't use the same email/password they used for FNN on that account or else that most likely will be next.
***** CHANGE YOUR EMAIL PASSWORD IF THIS IS YOU! *****

The only reason I could think they would try this route of hack would be to get backlinks to increase ranks on their site OR get links within the forum to link to their site as well to start showing in google soon.

Come on webmaster quit slackin' on your pimpin'

All three of the top links will direct you to FishingNetwork. That's not the problem.

The issue at hand is that a Google search for fishingnetwork should not turn up hits with spam text (highlighted in red above). That's a big no-no if your run a website, period. It shows the entire world that your site security has been severely compromised. Some of the posters commenting here do not appear to be familiar with how search engines function. TopwaterTony (a few posts back) has also elucidated the basic problem and described nicely how dangerous this can be not only as it scares away legitimate site traffic, but also for the users themselves (you and me).

I completely agree. All users of this site need to be cautious. As Topwatertony says, at the very least, make sure the password used for this site is not used for any other accounts that contain sensitive, private information. I would be curious to know if this current issue has anything to do with the website crash that occured some months ago.

Wow, you win the Internets. It's good to know that you believe FNN uses keywords like "best replica rolexes" and "calvin klein womens watches online ." Nice try. Or maybe you are into web design and routinely include such keywords for your clients? Congrats.

Regardless, it's been fixed.

I too was shaking my head at some of these comments in this thread. Anyway I'm glad to see it has finally been fixed. However, I wish there was some kind of announcement or official explanation about what happened.

So, when FNN was 'made,' they chose to put "Rolex Replicas" in their KEYWORDS for what reason again?

It was a typo. They obviously meant to type "Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110." I blame the auto-correct feature on tapatalk.

I don't get it, when a website is advertising a fishing forum(such as this one) it is common for them to show up as something completely different from what there advertising to accomplish what? to get people to look at them and go" well i've been meaning to join a fishing forum, i may as well join it since this watch ad brought me here."
