View Full Version : Where Will You Be Fishing For Trout?

Is it Trout Season Yet? The wait is killing me smalls!

Thought it would be interesting to see where everyone was planning to spend their time fishing for trout. I know many of us fish all the local lakes, but where do you plan to spend the majority of your time on the water?

Personally, I just got a kayak so that I can troll and cover more water so I plan to spend most of my time at Irvine Lake. The free launch doesn't hurt either... ; )

When you answer the poll, post up why you will be fishing this lake the most.

I voted for Irvine lake. I love to troll for larger units. One reason is fishing the Irvine tourneys is a blast. Knowing the next hit could be a $1,000 cash or losing the battle and just having another fish story. :Slap: That troll session with you was still one of the best session i have ever had. Man those were quality!

But i will say this, if Irvine has the rats again this year i probably will only fish tourneys there and head to Anaheim for some Tailwalkers. Insane fights on the troll!

I am boatless at the momment and was thinking about getting a yak as well. What did you end up getting? Probably tricked out already knowing you.. Let me know how ya like trolling on a yak.

The Vine is my go to lake because I do have a kayak and love to troll this lake. It doesn't hurt that the lake staff is top notch and always treats us like family. I have been fishing this lake for over 20 years and every year about this time I get stoked for trout season. The tournament series is great and like Rooster said, you just never know when that next fish is a big money winner! Come on trout season!!!!!

The Vine because i have a tube, there is no launch fee plus i love that lake because its clean and its actually a LAKE not a dirt hole , i have only been there twice on my tube and limited out both times. I will be there 1 to 2 times a week this trout season

I wont be fishing at any casinos (pay lakes). The Lower O and PVR will do just fine - no pay lake will ever come close. EVER. Have fun with your 20+ dollar limits of trout...that is if you can beat the pay lake system and actually catch a limit consistently. You might catch a limit or a big one every once in a while but in the end they always win, just like a casino. They're after your dollar, not your enjoyment for the sport. Always remember that when fishing those dumps. Still amazes me how many veteran anglers on this board are fooled by their games. Sad, truly sad.

Just my two cents of course. It's not my money, it's yours - waste away!

Well my last weekends outing was good if smallmouth and millions of crappie are what you are after. For some reason I could't get into the trout on the fly but 2.5lbs smallmouth are a nice alternative and the crappie fry wasn't bad either!

I'll be fishing BBL til it's too cold, then I'll be a full timer at the Vine, with an occasional Jan/feb trip to Skinner for some topline trolling slayage.
My goals this year are to 1. break my PB of 4.8lbs, and 2. qualify for the Masters!
I'd love to fish PVR, if only I had the time and gas money to make the 600 mile round trip up there every week! Guess I'll just be throwing all my money away at the local trout casinos this year...

well that is a good point but perhaps like me many of the veteran anglers know how to catch fish and limit or come close to a limit most of the time.

and for us that are stuck down here in the city it is MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper to pay for a pay lake then it is for the gas to get up to the lower O or PVR.

I agree with Thatfool. And everybody pays for entertainment nowadays whether it be the movies, amusement park, etc. I don't see it as wasting money in any way. Going out there and fishing in a tube is well worth the price of admission in my eyes. I understand your point IF you live close to your places, BUT most of us don't so we have to go to a pay lake.

Well said. I think we all enjoy fishing or we wouldn't do it. If I lived in Bishop or (someday, I hope) Big Pine, I wouldn't need to travel far to fish. Well, maybe a long drive now and then for tuna. But we fish our home waters the most, travel when we can. For many of us, even us "vets," those are pay lakes. Some of us even enjoy a day at a real casino now and then.
Where will I fish for trout? There's four or five pretty good choices within half an hour's drive from my driveway in The OC, even a really nice one up the freeway from my office in Ontario. I plan to hit them all!

Corona has been my home water for many years and I usually hit it 3-4 times a month during trout season but with the price increases I will be splitting time with the Vine this season. And yeah, because of this hot weather they probably wont be stocking Corona till mid November.......bummer. Anaheim will probably be stocked first.

oh I'd bet they'll be "pre stocking" corona here in about 3 weeks or so. I can't remember the last time they didn't start trout stocking til november. I'm more worried about the water being cool enough for the Vine's November 2nd opener.

Poxy Boggards

I'd say that the early season is pretty much toast if we don't start seeing much colder temps at night.

Corona has been my go to lake for the several seasons and still holds a special place in my heart, but the fishing has not been as good over the past couple of winters. It's just not the same as it used to be. Things change.

I plan to mix it up this season, but with the new yak you can bet I'll be hitting up Irvine now that I can cover a whole lot more water ;)

I start every year at the irvine opener, then off to corona cause the 91 freeway sucks but I'll be doing irvine more this year. I want to pay a visit to lake Dixon, can't take my own boat as rentals only but man do I miss that little lake. I was smashing tail walkers like bass it was insane. I'll even roll up to hemet lake a time or two and most importantly I will be taking my daughter to defend her title at little lake for the smallest fish derby........ She's 4 and loving fishing so I know she will limit out fast there. She won a nice prize at a derby with a .04 lb trout. Liked silverwood last year too.

So many lakes I guess I'm a lakewhore, I just get around and cant commit to just one.

Mojave River Angler
09-26-2012, 03:30 PM
I suppose I'll spend most of my time at Big Bear Lake and Lake Isabella. Big Bear is ok when the traffic is low. Isabella is large enough that I've never seen "traffic" there...even during the derby...unless you choose to hang out in certain areas. But with a lake that large there is always somewhere else. I'll spend some of my time in a kayak, and some in a power boat at both lakes. I might go to silverwood if I want to have a nice day on the water and PRETEND I'm fishing. And one of these days I'll get around to fishing for stripers...and that won't be at either of those lakes...so not sure where for that.

Go the weekend after the tournaments, the fish never seem to acclimate the week of the tournaments at BBL but a week or 2 following at BBL is normally real good! Also the big ones tend to hug the shoreline for a while luckily it's not like the pay to fish lakes where the snaggers can pick um off too much in the way of weedbeds.

The BBL tribs are the lone exception (besides special regs waters like Bear Creek and Deep Creek). The tribs are all the creeks that feed into BBL. This is a common mistake in So Cal. Most are not aware of the regs for the area. I could never understand why the BBL tribs are exempt from the general regs.

I agree! It's the one reg I always point out to the DFG as making absolutely no sense at all. The DFG guys don't even know about it and will claim that all the southern areas are 5 total no 10 in possession, I love to bring that one up just to see the confusion on their faces!

90 degree+ weather next week looks like for most of the week. Not looking good 2 days of cooler water like you say is not going to be a big enough dent.

But Hesperia Lake was supposedly stocked yesterday with a large amount of trout and another stocking next week. I haven't been able to get down there to confirm yet maybe I'll take a look today and update later.
