Trolly and I showed up just as the Team 57 BBQ was wrapping up but we were still able to share in some awesome BBQ and visit with some old friends. I want to give a shout out to Taper Steve and Big Daddy for making the get together happen and I’ve got to commend you both as well as all the Team 57 members who showed to honor Dana and to keep the Team 57 Legacy alive. Family, Friends, Fun and Fishing. Great job everyone and Thank You Irvine Lake for hosting the Memorial Tournament!

Trolly and I have been looking forward to the Dana Rea Memorial Tournament for quite a while now. Not only to honor a Truly Great Friend but we had two special guests that were to be with us, two of the SWAT founders, Wingnut and Bones.
Unfortunately Bones lost a good friend during the week and couldn’t make it out to the lake for the event. Mike we’re sorry for your loss and hope you are doing well. Our thoughts were with you Buddy.

After visiting with Team 57 for a while I got a call from Wingnut and he was right on his schedule of meeting us at 6:00pm so Trolly and went down to get the boat in the water and get everything ready for our Rookie Catfishermans debut.:Big Grin:

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/SWAT1010-9.jpg

We decided to take Arthur right out to one of our go-to spots and set up camp for the night.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/SWAT1012-13.jpg

On our way out we saw some of the Team 57 members already anchored down and then got our boat anchored up. Trolly, now also known as Mayhem, went to work dividing up the fresh mack.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/SWAT1014-11.jpg

Things were already looking up........Trolly with a couple of eight pounders already on the boat!:Rolls Eyes:

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/SWAT1021-8.jpg

Wingnut was just about as ready as one could get and jumped right to work listening to Trollys instructions on knot tying, bait presentation and casting out to where we told him we wanted to fish. I could see the anticipation in our Rookies face, he was ready to fish!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/SWAT1016-11.jpg

It wasn’t until we had all the rods out that I realized "Hey, we may have a problem"…… with all the coaching and stories of “freight train” runs and “spool dragging fights” we neglected to let our rookie know the next step was to sit back and wait…..maybe even take a nap.

Trolly noticed this as well and jumped into action trying to make our surf fishin buddy a little more at home so he went to work and brought this beauty to the net.......

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/SWAT1018-8.jpg

Trolly knew that once we had the rods in the water we needed to show our guest another thing or two about how to best while away the time between bites so he broke out some of his world famous grape leaves.....:Envious:

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/SWAT1017-10.jpg
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0810.jpg

Well, after the grape leaves were devoured and some more stories of big hits, drag screaming runs and the fish of a lifetime we had to settle down and wait and wait and wait. At this point I was settling in waiting for that first bite of the night and to see our Buddy Wingnut bring in that first catfish of the night. Waiting is nothing out of the ordinary for me but as I look over at my fishing partner and our special guest I feel a little panicked.........Oh no I'm losing them. Boredom is setting in!

Checking for text messages..........

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0811.jpg

Clowning around.......

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0813.jpg

Nodding off.........

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0812.jpg

And the all too common, I'm gonna check with Big Daddy to see if he's catching fish......
Aw heck, no cell reception!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0814.jpg

Luckily, just before the possibility of mutiny, one of the rods takes off! We told wingnut "The first one's yours Buddy!" Wingnut gets the rod in hand and waits for the fish to commit and makes a mighty swing to set the hook and a miss! :Embarrassed:
We didn't even have time to worry about that first miss when another rod takes off and this time Wingnut makes contact and we're on baby! Catfish coming to the boat!:Envious:
Wingnut brought the first fish of the night on board and the anticipation for a hot bite is with us!:Thumbs Up:

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-09-15%20Irvine%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0816.jpg

As the night wore on we had a couple more short runs and anticipation was about all we had the rest of the night.

Big Daddy gave us a call toward the end of the evening and told us he had a few fish but wanted to stay out and fish some more. We told big Daddy we only had one fish and were planning on staying out as well to see if we could get Wingnut another shot at a catfish so the plans were to meet up after closing.
However, right after talking to Big Daddy Trolly yells out I'm on! and eventually brings in a fish he wants to weigh in. So, it was off to the races pulling up anchor and running to the other end of the lake with ten minutes before the deadline. Trolly jumped off the boat before I could tie up to the dock and it was off to the races........only to be one minute late to weigh-in! Sorry we didn't get to see you Big Daddy. I hope you were able to get a few more before coming in.

Arthur, it wasn't the hottest fishing we've had this summer but I'm glad you were able to make it out to Irvine to Honor Dana and fish with me and Trolly. Team 57 is still going strong and I'm sure that would make Dana very happy!

I'm looking forward to seeing you at HG-4 along with the SWAT Team and a lot of Team 57. I'm sure it is going to be a fun event!

First of all, thank you Daniella and Irvine Lake for hosting this annual event in memory of Dana, the Godfather of Team 57. :Big Grin:

Big Daddy and TaperSteve, thanks for carrying the torch for Team 57.:Thumbs Up:

Terry & Chris, thank you for being such fabulous hosts and broadening my horizon... I had such a great time hanging out with two of the original "Legends" that Dana himself handpicked.
That is one beautiful vessel Terry and good luck at the KOC tournament. :Thumbs Up:

Chris, thank you for feeding me, the grape leaves wraps were delicious! Thank you for the stimulating conversation and laughs... most of all, thanks for cutting bait all night so I didn't have to get my hands dirty, lol :Envious:
The look that was on my face when you pulled up that Surf Perch...

Terry, you are too kind not to mention my farming tendencies Saturday night. I missed TWO quality bites... set the hook too quickly. Damn rookie!
But it was fun to finally hook up with one... I think the entire lake heard us yell "Halibut!" :Big Smile:
Sorry for being so antsy.., just couldn't sit still, lol. But once you guys gave me that pill, I did settled down a bit.

Watching Chris running to make the weigh-in had me rolling... One minute late...

It was great to see some of the Team 57 Crew there also... thank you for introducing yourselves and I'm looking forward to seeing you guys at the HG4 event.

Good times indeed! :Big Grin: Dana is smiling, that's for sure...

Arthur,

I've got to say I was excited to hear that you wanted to attend Dana's Memorial event and fish with me and my long time fishing buddy Trolly......ahem..."Mayhem". It was as always a pleasure to spend some good fishing time with you.

I remember back at the first Legends event when Dana called me over to the shirt table to introduce me to this young guy who Dana immediately told me was one of the 'good guys" just before introducing us. Who'd have known that I'd become such good friends with that guy named Wingnut who never left his duties at the shirt table the entire Legends event.

Thanks again for your company fishing the cats with me and Trolly in honor of our Friend Dana Rea!:Thumbs Up:

Wow guys....What an adventure! Great write up Terry. I'm sorry for the late heads up that I wasn't going to be able to make it to the event. I was really looking forward to it but God had other plans for me so I was there with you guys in spirit. As I stood there in church paying my respects to a dear friend that passed away I also prayed that Dana's memorial would be a success for you guys. Even though I didn't make it I was with you guys ....believe me. I have many fond memories of the special events that Dana organized at Irvine lake in the past and I'm still haunted by his voice........ Can't seem to get it out of my head. Dana definately left a lasting impression on alot of souls. A big thanks to every one of Dana's true friends doing the best to keep his legacy alive.
Can't wait for my chance to do the same with the HG IV Event ........ See you guys in a month......Take care,Be safe and Tight Lines to you all!!

Looking forward to seeing you guys at HG4. :Big Grin:

Phuong, Thanks so much for the reply and it was good to sit with a couple of Dana's good friend to talk about the past gatherings we had and some of the more funny moments we shared with our friend Dana.

As for Arthur, it was definitely tough getting him to settle in and wait for the catfish to come around. At one point I had to laugh outloud when I noticed Arthur pacing up and down the center of the boat! you are right, the guy just cant sit still! At one point I thought the only way we could have got him to sit still would have been to break out a deck of cards but thinking about it that wouldn't have lasted long because he would have cleaned me out in a matter of minutes!

Thanks again Phuong and I'm looking forward to seeing you at HG-4!:Thumbs Up:
