Need Fish ID Help...Surf Smelt?

Hey Guys,

I was fishing at dawn this morning. I caught a couple short halibuts and a couple other fish I couldn't readily identify. Is it a surf smelt of some kind? There was an active bait ball happening and I tossed an LC into it and caught two of these guys. The first was about 12". The second one was 16". I'd appreciate and ID on them. Thanks.

as for the ID.....looks like a common jacksmelt...one of the flatties favorite meals...it's a good thing that U caught one...means bait was present...U must have been in a good zone and doing something right..

Thanks, Gary. I've never caught one of those before. Yeah, got lucky at gray light, lots of activity on the surface. Near perfect conditions...clear water, no salad and no surf, incoming tide. One complaint, too damn hot, 79 degrees by 9:30!

Looks like a Jack Smelt to me. I landed about 24 and farmed approx a dozen of them this last Sunday. :EyePop:
