I’ve been very busy with starting my college education the last couple weeks, but somehow I found some time to go out with my father and do what I do – and love, best.

Last Saturday was pretty slow until the last spot along the kelp where the calicos finally began to bite. IIRC, we ended up with about 20 nice calicos and one 7 lb. yellowtail. By the grace of God I managed to catch the yellowtail, which was not line shy (30 pound test and a live squid) and made a mad beeline for the bow, and was quickly subdued thereafter. It went into the smoker on Sunday with alder chips and made some great fish jerky.

This last Saturday was more crowded as it was free fishing license day. We had 33 anglers aboard. We fished sculpin first off for pretty decent fishing, and stopped short of limits as we were going structure bass fishing, and this is the time of year the big sculpin move in an occupy the shallow artificial reefs. We first made a stop at the Pipe where the cabezon were eager to chew. We caught two keepers here, including a 5.8 pounder. We then bounced around on the “stones” where bass fishing was a little tough, but we caught some more sculpin that inched us closer to limits. The last spot of the day was the best for the bass, and the BIG BAD CABEZON. Nice calicos and dandy sandies came over the rail. I ended up with 1 calico and 3 sand bass, including a nice one you see below. The cabbies that came up here were an incredible 8.2 and 11.9 pounds, the latter that beats a cabbie that came up from this area last October, by five ounces! We ended up with 134 sculpin, 45 bass, and 4 cabbies for 33 anglers.
