My wife has never been to Mammoth and finally expressed the desire to go. So taking her there. We'll stay at Mammoth.

Quick questions:

1. What are some of the lakes in that area that will be good for fishing? I know of Lake Mary but not much more than that. She's not a fisherwoman but also expressed the desire to learn. I'll be teaching her to use minijigs and hope she catches enough to kindle an interest....:)

2. Hiking. That will be her primary interest so I'll be taking her on various hikes during the days. Any suggestions as to the best hikes?

We're also thinking of taking one day into Yosemite where we have spent some time in the past. Any suggestions there also welcome.

Thanks in advance.

You'll have four lakes you can fish, Mary, George, Mamie and Twin Lakes. My wife and I always do well at Mary.

There are several, here is good site to check:

Tuolumne Meadows is only about an hour away from Mammoth. th it to drive just a little farther to Tenaya Lake. After that, it is about an hour to the main valley and you'll have to judge whether or not you want to make the drive. If you get hungry, stop by the Whoa Nellie Deli in Lee Vining. You'll pass by it on the way up and down.

there's always Jared Smith's book

mix some short hikes with some fishing...

though my fav's are the 20 lakes valley in Tioga pass ... or the Little lakes valley (mosquito flats and aptly named) at end of the road part rock creek lake.

or the area around Devils postpile.... Agnew meadows, red's meadow, etc

close to Mammoth, nice day hike....

Convict Lake is pretty stunning as well. It's worth the hike along the south trail to the back. Fish the drop off's and you'll do fine.

I agree with Fish Cop, Convict Lake is one of my favorites and his advice was spot on. It's about the same distance to get there vs the mammoth lakes (20min), and imho much better fishing and scenery. I just came back from mammoth this weekend, the mammoth lakes were crowded and tougher fishing, so I went up to the Virginia lakes and lundy lake (both an hour away). The fishing there was pretty good.
