Tenkara fishing in the HEAT of SUMMER

AMAGO 13' 6"
Level line 3.5#
tippet 6x
hare's ear. reverse hackle, flies used

0800 hrs Started out at Eisenhower Park located off the 55 Freeway. Walked from the northern parking lot to check out the man made stream they have built which supplies the small lake downstream. Sun was hot and there was plenty of top water splashing by feeding LMB small ones though. I worked the lake around the shore and could not get any bites but some followers using my dark hare’s ear. Talked to some locals there and they steered me to the shade. Bite was on was I dialed in the shady areas and fished near to far. These fish were spooky but with my 30 foot casts I kept my distance. Bites were all soft too. I managed to get about 15 fish … all Palm sized bluegills.

1030 hrs My next destination was TRI CITY PARK. I learned my lesson and went right to a shaded area and first cast had a small bluegill. I had changed my fly to a TENKARA reverse hackle with a red body #16. I caught more than 10 fish in that shaded area and worked around the lake fishing all shady spots. This lake produced some of the smallest bluegills I have ever caught on the fly. Moved to a sandy area very shallow and no shade. Fish were nesting in some nice crater shaped nests and very aggressive to my fly lurking above. Caught some nice colored males. After 2 hours here I decided to pack it in and head for destination #3

1320 hrs I arrived in the secluded LAGUNA LAKE PARK. Wind conditions were not ideal but I fished the lake down wind first. Immediately got into some shoreline fish nesting. All the fish were very small (palm sized). Some guy was to my left pulling in a nice size Catfish. There are circulators here and I focused my casts to them and let the current take my fly to the fish. This reminded me of stream fishing with this nice current. I was letting the fly get carried down stream and pulling slowly back up stream and managed to get numerous hook ups. After walking completely around the lake and fishing at each of the circulators I called it a day. 1530 hrs

Chuck - I'm sweating just thinking about you out there fishing all day. But, it looks like you had a great time and explored some new fishing areas. I hope you are covered from head to toes with sun protection just like "Monster" Alice. The back of my hands were getting two shades darker than my covered arms. So, I've started wearing fishing sun gloves. I normally don't like gloves because you lose the feel. But, I'm going to try a pair of Simms gloves that have open palms for more direct hand contact with the rod. Nice park and fish pictures. Those really are tiny fish. Charlie

Nice report again with great pictures! Those are the smallest bluegills I've ever seen. It looked like fun to explore a few new locations for panfish action. And the city park looks really nice and pretty from your pictures. I didn't fish this week due to the hot weather here in the mountains. I stayed cool inside of my house and enjoyed watching dramas while sipping an icy cold drink. It got up to 102 today and now it's cooled down to like 60'-70'.

Charlie, you need to buy the gloves for protection. I need to get rid of my farmer's tan in this summer, and the sun tan looks wierd with a dress on. I don't care if I looked like a monster or what, just check out the picture (I fished in a shirt with half sleeves and the gloves, and you can tell the difference in an hour or two of fishing) and you'll know what I'm talking about.

I too have been laying low because of the hoooot weather. But, maybe will fish a few hours tomorrow morning with Chuck/Robert. Everyone will be able to recognize me because I'll be completely covered from the sun like the Mummy. I've become so obsessed with sun protection that in addition to the Simms sun gloves, I've ordered a pair of Eclipse Sun Sleeves. Advertised good protection from the sun for fishing, golf, driving, outdoors activities.

Hey, thanks! Glad you found that post on my blog useful! If anyone else is interested, I definitely recommend picking up a pair of sun sleeves for UV protection. I just found out about 'em and haven't stopped wearing them on fishing trips. They are super comfortable and breathable as well. There's a special coupon code for one brand of them, Solartex, on my blog (link above) as well.

Vivid, great topic! I really liked the photos you posted. The catfish one is stellar!

I'm happy that I googled "sun sleeves" and found your blog. I was all set to buy the Simms before reading your review. I haven't received my sleeves yet but look forward to giving them a try.

Hey Fishnfun, carpanglerdude, thank you guys for the info on the sun sleeves. I just ordered two pairs and I think it will help a lot with protection for fishing under the sun. carpanglerdude, that is a nice blog that you wrote on the sun sleeves. It's very helpful!
