Vacationing with the niece and nephews for the week - got a chance to wake really early for a Wedneday morning tubing session at Windy Point. Got there just before sunrise and saw an eagle flying around - then perched in a tree to see how I would do. Pix not very good, but it is an eagle up there.

Worked two rods - fly rod with a wooly bugger on the left waiting for crappi hits and bass rod with a wacky rigged senko on the right working for bass.

Picked up about 7 young large mouth bass - all were about the size in the pic - nothing over a pound or so. Caught a couple of them on the wooly bugger - and it's always fun to grad a bass on the fly rod.

Picked up 15+ crappie - most under/around docs. Picked up a wicked-feisty blue gil (first ever BG I caught in BBL) and tossed it back before I realized I hadn't snapped a pic.

Had to get back home about 10, but picked up a nice little trout on the kick back to where I parked - going right over the hotspot I've seen lots of anchored boaters getting hit.

Not sure where all the big fish are at - but at least I didn't get skunked!

Cheers,

Eric

Glad to see your post. Headed up tomorrow morning for some much needed rest and fishing. I'll bring the kayak out to see how things are. I assume that the green slime is 5-6' deep now. I'll probably spend most of my time trying to find a few trout. I might go for a few crappie for a friend, but I don't eat them. He loves them...as many others do. I hardly ever throw my wooly boogers but maybe I'll get them wet tomorrow. I have a freezer full of ocean fish so I'm not really on a mission to feed the family. I just want to have fun.

Thanks for the report. Hope to see you on the water again soon. With the price of gas going up I may have to savor fewer trips to my favorite Lake Isabella and spend a little more time at BB as an adopted second best. I've spent 12 years learning that lake. I suspect it will take me that long to learn BB too.

Nice going etaggart. Thanks for the report and pics. I'll be taking my two sons up there next weekend hoping to find some crappie/bluegill or trout. I have a question: when you fish the docks are you referring to the large fishing docks or the smaller private ones? Also, would you happen to know what is the proper etiquette for fishing around private docks?

By the way, I think I'm over analyzing my approach for targeting the crappie/bluegill. I've have several rigs that I want to try, but I don't want to waste my time either. What one rig do you recommend for the crappie/bluegill?

Thanks

Hey Marinate,

I'm in a float tube fishing around private docks - not the public fishing docks. If you're on a boat or tube, no problem fishing around private docks, just be considerate of boats, etc..

For crappie, I usually use a small crappie lure or a wooly bugger fly. The only bluegil hit I got was on the fly. They'd probably also hit grubs on a small hook. Crappie seem to want to hit on something moving slow and steady.

Good luck!

Eric

Eric,

Thanks for sharing some of your tips on crappie/bluegill. Also, nice to know it's not a problem to fish the private docks, and me and my sons will probably only fish around docks without boats, just to be on the safe side. We'll be in an inflatable kayak and float tube. From your other posts you seem to have good luck (skill) getting those crappie. I'd be thrilled to catch as many as you did. I'll definitely keep the "slow and steady" retrieve in mind. Thanks again!

Got a chukle when I threw out a wooly booger yesterday and it had a little bass hanging off of it in less than 30 seconds. Thanks for pointing me that way.

We were looking for the Eagles but never got the opportunity to catch a glimpse of them. Were you fishing the Fawnskin side? Thanks for the report.

Yep - On the north side (fawnskin) around Windy Point. Next weekend I'll try the jetty by B's BBQ to see if the bass are holding there.
