Got online this evening and purchased a pass for Barrett for August 1st. Never fished there, of course, but heard it's got quite a reputation. Any tips or suggestions, as well as directing to the 'high percentage areas' would definitely be appreciated! Also, is it worthwhile lugging along my portable fishfinder, or should I leave it home.

It'll be a bit of a drive and not a cheap outing so I want to make the best of it. Again, any advise would surely be welcomed. Thanks!

I'm in Barrett's area and have yet to fish it so kudos to you. The portable fish finder isn't to bulky do I always go with the saying, " it's better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. As far as baits go, the buzz around the tackle shops out here, in regards to Barrett are no different than any other lake.robos in MM III and oxblood dropshot or texas Senkos in greens with a pepper flake weightless. Hope this helps.

Tight lines,

Find chunk rock and you will find fish. The water is dropping really fast each week so conditions are rapidly changing with fish constantly having to adapt as well. Drop shot is automatic. Heard the shad are schooled up so the fishfinder will help find the wolfpacks. I had best luck at the chunk rock area last month. Weeds are not a problem since the water is dropping. Fishing is much slower this year than last but tubers have been reporting 40 plus fish from reports i've read on sdfish. Check the barrett reports and read the previous weeks reports. Fun fishing, good luck to you.

I have fished the lake a few times and when we went it was wide open, i recommend a gallon of frozen water as the heat is going to prettymuch kill you and take a lunch. no store on the property take a truck or a car that doesnt sit low on the ground as you will be driving another two miles or so once you have reached the entrance/gate. as for spots? look for the cove that has a lot of sunken tress it will blow your mind its sweet and lures well try anything the lake only opens a few months of the year.

Good luck
Qaze.

P.S
the immigartion will be their once you leave, to check if you have a extra passengers strange but true.

Barrett in August should be toasty, hopefully it doesn't get into the triple digits. If it does and you stay out there until the last train leaves the lake, I commend you.

A few tips as others have mentioned:

1. Prepare for the sun. Sunblock, big hats, lots of fluids, lots of water, and more water. And take some water just in case. You get my drift.

2. Leave the lowrider at home. You'll have to be escorted through the one lane road to the dock, and the ride can be a bit difficult in vehicle without much clearance.

3. BRING A TROLLING MOTOR AND BATTERY. You'll have better positioning, especially with the winds that pick up in the afternoon. Without proper boat position, you'll be turning on the outboard time and time again to get back onto spots.

4. Run and gun until you find a pattern. Once you find that pattern, replicate it across similar areas that you find. If the fish aren't tight up to structure, focus on offshore structure, like the chunk rock people talk about. Don't fall into the trap of lingering too long in an area that looks 'fishy' if you're not getting bit.

5. Bring toilet paper. Nothing sucks more than clenching your cheeks and finding one of the porta potties has run out of toilet paper.

6. There are NO amenities here. Bring EVERYTHING you need. Try to get in on the first train. Those first 2 hours in the morning, especially this time of year, is when you can experience some pretty good topwater action.

7. Watch for rattlers on shore.

8. CRIMP YOUR BARBS, per the regulations. Ironically, the majority of the time I've run into Fish and Game was at this place. Doesn't quite add up, since they can be making boatloads of money giving tickets at other places. Don't think anglers who pay $100 to fish this place would be the ones poaching, but I could be wrong I guess.

P.S
the immigartion will be their once you leave, to check if you have a extra passengers strange but true.

WTH? They didn't check ME for passengers.

They did ask for my papers and stuff though. I thought I was in Arizona for a second.

Let me just add this. I have fished Barrett many times and I have had really good bass fishing, but for a real kick, I like fishing for Barrett's huge Bluegills. Make sure you bring along an ultralight outfit with 2 lb test and some tiny jigs or grubs. (Make them barbless of course) Fish the shady places on the boat dock at mid day for GIANT Bluegill. Some of these fish are just toads! You can also fish for big BGs any place that the bass hang out too.
