Report#1 – Sunday 7/1 S.W.A.T. Recon Mission on the Assault Vessel.

The bite in the surf has been a little off lately so I decided to take the S.W.A.T. Assault Vessel out for a spin last weekend. Taking it outside of the harbor for the first time to fish the local kelp beds and structures. Learning new things and getting prepared for bigger adventures.
My buddies Binh & Sokha will round out the 3-man crew for the morning session. :Big Grin:

We started late and only stayed out until about noon. The fishing wasn’t great, even though the fish count was pretty decent, we didn’t catch anything really worthwhile. We mostly fished the kelp beds and ended the morning by making some bait to do a few drifts. I think in total we got about 15-20 Calico Bass up to 2 lbs, 5-6 Sand Bass, 2 short Barracuda, 4 short Halibut, 1 Sheephead, 3-4 assorted Rock Fish. No pics and all released. What we really wanted was some legal Halibut and/or White Sea Bass.

Special thanks to my S.W.A.T. brother JerryG for sending me detailed maps of the area and sharing some great intel of the location. :Thumbs Up:

Binh & Sokha, always a pleasure fishing with you two, see ya soon!

Report#2 – Sunday 7/8 S.W.A.T. Ghost Hunt with Master Yoda.

While I was working on Saturday, I get a picture text from Bill (Which Way Out) showing a bunch of mega-sized White Sea Bass lying on the deck of Mikey’s (Exfactor) boat. Bill had to add the sarcastic comment of “Wish you were here…” :Envious: It turned out that Master Yoda has found a large concentration of Squid and where there are Squid there are Ghosts. Mikey & Bill had their 6-fish limit of WSB up to 40 lbs plus by 1:00pm! :EyePop:

Check out his report by clicking this link, http://fishingnetwork.net/forum4/showthread.php?65619-SWAT-PART-DUEX-or-GO-BIG-OR-GO-HOME

About 11:00pm that night I get a call from Yoda himself. Here’s how the conversation went…

Exfactor: What are you doing tomorrow?

Wingnut: Church in the morning and going to Westminster with the Iron Chef…

Exfactor: Skip church, ask for forgiveness and cancel your plans, you’re coming up here tomorrow… it’s time!

Wingnut: Uhhh… let me ask the Boss first… “Honey, can I go fishing tomorrow? Mikey guarantees that I will bring home some fish for you…

Iron Chef: You better! Okay, have fun…

Wingnut: Did you hear that Mikey? I’m in… what time you want me at your front door and what do you need me to bring?

Exfactor: 4:45am… I got all the gear you need, just bring a big ice chest…

I pull up in front of Mikey’s house at a quarter till five and I see Bill (WWO) unloading the gear from his Jeep and Mikey packing up his truck.
The plan was for 5 anglers to head out in two separate boats to the Ghost hunting grounds. Bill would be on George’s (Mikey’s friend) boat and Mikey & I will fish on Jerry’s boat, also a friend of Mikey’s. You see, Mikey have many friends with boats up here and don’t even need to take out his own boat, lol.

After gassing up the vessels and got some supplies, we headed for the Santa Barbara Harbor launch ramp and off into the grey light we went.
Jerry’s 24’ fish killing machine “Cabo” :Thumbs Up:

First order of business, make some bait… and so we did, hundreds of pieces of Squid. They were everywhere!

I got the next two hook ups… big and strong fish. Mikey says that it was the right kind. After extensive battle with each, they both bit me off on 30 lb test line. Two strikes already and it's still early...

Mikey looked at the graph and said that the fish were running just below the surface. So we fly lined a couple of squid out there and then Mikey showed me something that I've never even considered for saltwater fishing. Just to show that he's the man when it comes to adapting to all kinds of situations. He rigged up a couple of rigs for us with a Squid under a bobber. :Surprised: I was like, uh okay... I haven't fished with a bobber since I was like 10 years old fishing for Blue Gills. But it was deadly as we soon found out.

Jerry was next to hook up.

I’ve been wanting to take revenge on some big Ghosts since getting smoked in the surf by a couple of monster Ghosts that crossed the water column a few weeks ago. Here is my chance…
I fought this fish on #20 line for what seems like an eternity. Took me around the boat a couple of times, Mikey was directing me around the anchor, a back & forth drawn out battle… I finally got it close enough to the boat to show color and we could see that it was a quality size WSB. A short while later I had it next to the boat ready for the gaff… this part is too funny, and surprised the heck out of me… I look over at Mikey expecting him to send the gaff down at the fish, but instead, he extended his arm towards me with the gaff and said, “Here, finish it…!”
Whaaaa…??? I was kinda shell-shocked there for a moment and instinctively, grabbed the gaff out of Mikey’s hand. On my first try, stuck it solidly into the fish, dropped the rod that was in my other hand, grabbed the gaff with both hands and hoisted the fish on board. My PB Ghost 52” in the 40 lbs plus class. Revenge is sweet! :Dancing Banana:

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/Wingnut%2011/Untitled-6.jpg

In the meantime, George and Bill on the second boat were having their hands full fighting Ghosts of their own… they had at least a couple on the deck. It was a blast catching these fish in close proximity with each other and yelling and cheering each other on as we were battling these monster fish. :Big Grin:

Jerry had a prior engagement so we had to bug out early and head back to the harbor by 1:00pm. I know that we left them biting as George & Bill and a couple of Mikey’s friends out there continued to tear them up after we left the area.
I got what I came for… one big WSB and that’s all I needed.

Mikey & I enjoying the relaxing ride back to the harbor. :Big Grin:

I’m going to have the Iron Chef whip me up some fried Calamari as an appetizer to the White Sea Bass dish.

Jerry, really nice meeting you sir and thank you for having me as a guest on your boat. Congrats on the PB White Sea Bass and looking forward to fishing with you again soon. :Big Grin:

Bill & George, that was great being with shouting distance of each other as we were fighting those fish.
Bill, for someone who is supposed to be “uncoachable”, you certainly showed that you can hang with the best of them. Isn’t it funny how these fish can turn us all into teenagers again? I personally had a great time catching them, but the time I spent out there with you guys is the true blessing.

Mikey, what can I say… you are the MAN. You talk the talk and walk the walk. You were the first to locate this bite and shared it with us. Don’t think that I don’t notice, but you care more about our happiness than you do about your own. I know that you intentionally pass on grabbing some rods because you wanted us to catch the fish. So unselfish in your ways, no wonder the Fish Gods smiles upon you. Thank you for making easy for me… I pretty much showed up and followed your lead all morning. To me, you’re not only a legend in the Santa Barbara area, but everywhere else as far as I’m concern. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience with me and most of all for your friendship. :Group Hug:

Until we meet again… have a great week everybody.

Arthur,

Can't wait to see the ghost report!!! I missed you guys on the launch ramp at Cabrillo by 15 minutes heading out AND coming back in!!! Wind picked up pretty bad out there and the bite pretty much shut down in the afternoon anyway.

Hope to be able to meet up with you guys on the surf sometimes before my summer break is over. ;)

Well, I'll fill in some of the time waiting for Report#2 with this offering... Kind of like the trailers before the main feature..

My boy, Aaron, and I found these two on the backside of Anacapa, July 3, aboard the 'Aloha Spirit'.. Fair bite in morning.. great bite early afternoon.. 22 anglers....25 Ghosts... The two largest (to 48lbs.) were part of a stringer of four caught by the only woman (Mary) on board... Custom lavender/pink rods, etc... She was the only one using 8oz., 5/0, hugging tight to the bottom.. We were using 6oz., which was plenty, but were three turns off the bottom to avoid the bats....mistake..:Embarrassed:
Great day, great boat, great son..

Arthur when you drove up Sunday morning, in the super stealth assault vehicle I was shocked.
Mike was kind enough not to call and wake me up. Tnx Yoda... I needed the rest big time...

Well, Mike in all his morning splendor, explained the program for the day and we were off.

After the Sat. Mikey and I had, we knew we were going into battle. The troops were called in and the attack was on. Big Gear or go home was the order of the day.
Your not kidding when you said it was fun fishing close to the other boats and yelling hook up and "Salmon" Yea I heard it!!!!!

Well I will close by saying it was a blast and Congrats to you, Jerry and Mikey.

FYI- I have posted Sat. events in the Saltwater section as well as our part of Sunday. So click on over in to see and read even more of the Epic weekend.

What an insane day fishing the Tankers guys when Arthur! Congratulations on the seabass guys! When I received your text message that the guys had 6 on the boat on Saturday I was in La Jolla on my Kayak chasing the exotics which I spent 7:30 am to 10:30pm on the water trying to target the exotics for the for a big skunkaroo no fish were hanging on the LJ squid. I was actually thinking of packing up and heading up north to continue my mission but with 2 hours of sleep the night prior, 15 hours + on the water, a 4 1/2 hour drive round trip solo my brain and body was fried. I am going to have to call in sick from work this Friday to get out there before the fish disappears.

I can hear Vin Scully now..."Arthur has really had a run of bad luck lately with the long ball. Here's the 0-2 pitch...and it's a deep drive to straight away centerfield, a WAY back, and this ball is GONE!"

Holy poltergeists Batman! What a beast Arthur! Congratulations! And way to go Mikey getting those guys on fish. Sounds like you guys had your hands full out there. I know guys have used balloons on those suspended fish down in La Jolla but the bobbers might be a little more stealthy. I've been waiting to hear this story since I got your text yesterday. Not sure if you're into wearing jewelry Arthur, but you can have that headstone polished and made into a charm and hung from a chain. It really looks awesome after it's polished and they can use a clasp/holder to attach to the stone so they won't have to drill into it. Most jewelers should know how.

Great job on getting your ghosts Sid. You may not have got the most or the biggest, but it's always nice to score!

Congrats to all you guys!

PS - Looks like that soupfin is shouting some parting obscenities at you guys!

Glad you got your PB ghost with me Arthur! That fish may take awhile to upgrade, but I like your chances. We started out the day venturing to our destination with Arthur stating "you know Mikey, it was 2 years ago to the day that or founder Dana passed away". I thought to myself, how fitting would it be for Arthur to conquer a beast WSB today! Arthur hasn't been in a good squid bite before, and he probably had more fun catching those then anything, but I kept him occupied while we waited out the bite. Since only a few of my close friends knew about where we were, we were cheering everyone on when they got bit, and all of us caught quality fish on this day. One of my other friends called after finishing up boat chores, and said "Thanks for giving me the best day of fishing I've ever had with my son" . I know Lynn and family will be enjoying these delicious fish for weeks to come, and maybe, just maybe, my surf fishing buddy will be back for more stories soon. He still wants that big flat one, and I'll do my best to help make that happen. In the meantime, its respool reels with new line, replace terminal tackle lost, and reorganize my tackle box. I'm out. Mikey

Awesome Report(s)! Nice to see some white sea bass redemption for all the great whites that have been lost in the surf this season. I anticipate there will be plenty more to come in the weeks/ months ahead. When they make the mistake of moving in to striking range Yoda (Mikey) will find them. Well done boys.. Oh yeah and to answer Arthur's question if the fish in the picture was a calico it's actually its a Johnny Bass.. I believe the official name is olive rock fish. Anyways it looks like you had a fantastic morning on the water and managed to catch some big fish. What better time to go back out there and catch more big fish...

NICE REPORT!!!

That boat is one of the best skiffs around! Plenty of room to walk or in some cases RUN to the bow when you hook a fish. I might know a little bit about that boat. I got one myself

Arthur,

Can't wait to see the ghost report!!! I missed you guys on the launch ramp at Cabrillo by 15 minutes heading out AND coming back in!!! Wind picked up pretty bad out there and the bite pretty much shut down in the afternoon anyway.

Hope to be able to meet up with you guys on the surf sometimes before my summer break is over. ;)

Andrew
Yeah Andrew, the wind made the trek back into the harbor interesting, lol.
Intel shows that it's been kinda slow in the surf lately, but I'll make my way back to the suds soon...

Nice catch Sid, nothing like a successful slay session for Father & Son. Good times! :Big Grin:

Awesome ride you have there Arthur. Beautiful Ghosts Sid....
Good times for sure. Can't wait for the pics of the Big Girls in Part 2.........
I still gotta get you out on the S.W.A.T. Assault Vessel one of these days bro. We just need to drug you up big time first, lol

WWO
Salmon!!! :Big Smile: I said it loud enough so you could hear Bill, lol.
When I pulled up Sunday morning and you looked at me, I saw the glazed look in your eyes... took you a few seconds to realize that it was me.
Let's wish our S.W.A.T. kayak crew luck up there this weekend.

Hi Ya Wingnut,

First of all my friend..... "CONGRATULATIONS"! :Big Smile::Applause: When you get even......YOU REALLY GET EVEN!!

What an awesome report Arthur! You had me smiling :Big Grin: during the entire read!

It was so much fun for me to read about the adventure that you shared with Mikey, Bill, Jerry and George!
Definitely...good friends sharing good times! :Thumbs Up:

Now......THAT'S ONE MONSTROUS WHITE SEA BASS! I'll bet the "Iron Chef" has BIG plans for that bounty of yours.....eh!! HMMM!

Arthur.....thanx for the fantastic read with pic's and also the PRE-POST text!

SP Dan <"))><

PS......Luv'd the trailer Sid! :Thumbs Up: Maybe ....you should start thinking .....lavender/pink ....ha ha  ha ....just a thought!
Thanks Dan... revenge is SWEET!
As for how the Iron Chef prepared the bounty, there wasn't much of a bounty left after we took care of some friends and family. We had one nice filet left for us... :Envious:
I was in the mood for simple fish tacos so that's what I got. The fresh fried Calamari was delicious, I'll post up some pics later.
Hope you've had some good luck in the surf lately my friend. :Big Grin:

Nice read. Thanks for the report WN and keep up the great work
Thank Rithy.

Thanks Jonathan, the word is that the Squid seiners came in last night and took a few tons... Hopefully, they will still be there for you guy tomorrow, good luck bro. Keep me update!

Don

PS - Looks like that soupfin is shouting some parting obscenities at you guys!
Yeah Don, when I lost the first two in quick succession, I was like here we go, getting smoked again...
Felt good to finally put one of these brutes on the deck. :Big Grin:
I got those WSB stones sitting on the desk in my office.

Holy crap, that white sea bass is huge. :EyePop:
Phuong was telling me about at work this morning. His family and mine camped out at lake San Antonio for 3 days over the 4th of July and didn't catch a dam thing. :Embarrassed: Can't wait to see some food pics from the iron chef.
Vince, I heard about the tough fishing out at Lake Santonio. No fish and a broken down boat. :Crying:
At least family time was good and everybody made it home safely.

Arthur, I'm gonna tell you right now that next time you plan on being in the town I grew up in you had better give me a call buddy!

After hearing about the trip Bill had with Mikey and then seeing the pictures of some very nice fish I knew you all were going to score well this weekend. Very nice catch and now I know you are going to tease everyone with pictures of the meal the Iron Chef makes out of it.:Thumbs Up:

Sid, I saw the pics of you and your son with some beautiful WSB of your own! That is way too cool to have such a great day and share it with him.
Lol, we go to Westminster maybe once every couple of month Terry. Will definitely give you a call when we're in the area. :Big Grin:
As for the meal, there was just enough for a meal left over after we took care of friends and family. We had one nice filet left for us... :Envious:
I was in the mood for simple fish tacos so that's what I got. The fresh fried Calamari was delicious, I'll post up some pics later.
Enjoy the weekend with the wife & daughter my friend. :Big Grin:

I'm out. Mikey
Mikey, one down and one to go to complete my 40/40 goal. I wanted a 40 lbs WSB and a 40 lbs Halibut. :Envious:
You know I got such a kick catching all those Squid on the sabiki, i could have done that all day.
Thanks again for thinking of me and making that call Saturday night. Your thoughtfulness is only one of the many qualities that you have in common with the Godfather 57 and is why I look up to you.
Until the next monster we put on the deck... God speed. :Big Grin:

Mikey, I could tell arthur was excited just from reading the text he sent me.

You have awesome skills! and I had to laugh about the part where you handed the gaff over to Arthur to seal the deal. Very Cool.:Thumbs Up:
When Mikey handed me that gaff, my heart skipped a beat, lol  But I know why he did it. Mikey is always teaching us and wanting us to experience new things, especially in the heat of the moment. So we will be ready for anything for anything. Just like a Eagle who pushes his young out of the nest for the first flight, right Bill? :Big Grin:

After taking care of family & friends, we had just enough WSB filets left for one good meal.
The Iron Chef asked me how I would like the WSB prepared. For some reason, I had a craving for just some simple fish & chips and fish tacos so that's what I got, along with some killer fried Calamari for an appetizer. Probably the least elaborate dish that the Iron Chef has put together for me, but perfect and delicious in every way. :Big Grin: The best fish & chips and fish tacos I've ever had. :Envious:

Extra Report - Sunday 7/22 Newport Harbor with Da Boyz... Superman Sighting!

Decided to take the S.W.A.T. Assault Vessel out to Newport Harbor for a relaxing day fishing with a few friends. Binh (Badbeat), Sokha (Troublehook) and my long lost fishing friend Phuong (Blackwater). :Big Grin:

It was a beautful day on the water but the fishing was soooo slowwww. A few Bass, a couple of short Halibut, some Sharks and Rays.
The highlight of the day was watching Sokha getting his butt kicked by a 50 lb + Bat Ray, lol.
Oh yeah, and we saw Superman flying around... read on. :EyePop:

Despite the fishing being dreadfully slow, I had a great time hanging out with my close friends and enjoying the sight, sound and the festivities of this great harbor.

Binh & Sokha, thanks for joining me on another adventure. Let's do Castaic or Pyramid when I get back in a couple of weeks.
Phuong, damn dude, been over a year since we fished together. I know you have many other priorities in life, like making money... but try to make time to fish once in awhile bro.

Have a great week everybody.

Now for the Superman sighting...

The coolest thing... this guy was flying around in a waterjet pack. I've never seen anything like it.
Maybe I should add one to the S.W.A.T. arsenal.

We sat there on the water for about ten minutes watching him do some awesome stunts. He put on quite a show for the armada of boaters that gathered around.
This guy is going to make a fortune with this invention. :Envious:

Sounds like good times with good friends...can't beat that. Didn't miss much in the surf this weekend, at least in my neck of the woods...nothing but 'junk' fish. :Rolls Eyes:

I can see it now...
Arthur up in the sky strapped into that thing, his little superman rod in hand, trolling through the harbor!

Arthur, I had to laugh while we were texting back and forth. I knew you guys were going to be fishing the harbor until you didn't have any daylight left and I knew there was no way these guys were going to get off the freeway once you got rolling.

It sounded to me like there was plenty of fun being had by Good Friends and the fish catching part wasn't the main object of the day. I'm glad you all got into a few fish.......Just made the day that much more fun.

I'll see you at HG-4 if not sooner.

Arthur,

Great to read a trifecta of nice reports! From a personal best WSB to a myriad of harbor denizens, you definitely have had a solid few trips. That ghost is a beautiful fish, and that bite sounds like a fantastic time. The food shots are always great to look at too. It's been a long time since we've hit the sand my friend, and I'm looking forward to doing so soon.

Don, 20 years or so ago I had one on for many hours. The fish dragged our 17 foot boat from Laguna Percibu nearly half way up to San Felipe. My best guess would put it at 7+ feet. We had it along side the boat and knew we couldn't gaff it, just wanted to get my Lure back. A very long story short, she rolled when we got into some shallow water and busted my 40 pound line.
Mention it to an older gentleman working in a San Felipe fish market later that day. I told him it was 7'+ and he said "150 kilos".

We hooked another the next day, but broke off about an hour into the fight.
The ones in the photo you show are babies.....

Hey Bill, are we talking about White Sea Bass or Black Sea Bass?
I think the world record WSB is something like 90 lbs.

Wow, that must have been one hell of an EPIC battle! Your one of only three people I've known to even tangle with one of those monsters.

Hey BW,

He's talking about tortuava. It's closely related to the WSB, but grows to dinosaur sizes. Like Bill said, the ones in the photo I put up there are just babies. They're mainly in the northern part of the Sea of Cortez and are now protected cuz they are VERY close to being wiped out. Because they look so similar, it can be easily mistaken for a WSB so people have to be careful of what they stick a gaff into. From what I've heard, and I don't care to know how they know this, the tortuava is supposed to taste even better than WSB.

They do!!!!
You can get it in San Felipe or El Golfo if you look hard enough. Old stomping grounds for me and my desert rats.

Don the real big difference is not only the size, but the tail. The tail is more rounded than the WSB tails. Other than that, I couldn't tell one from another. Well maybe by taste. But its been a long time, so maybe not.

Just another part of the story.
3 adults in an 17 foot boat, a 3 foot long gaff. I have always wondered what we would of done with it had we tried to put it on the boat.
