Arrived at 6, go on the water around 6:30. Perfect temperature both outside and in the water. This was my first time fishing Perris and my second time yak fishing so I am still trying to manage how to both fish and operate the yak. 90% of the time I was paddling, back paddling, getting caught in sticks, etc. But the ten percent I did fish was very pleasant.

Headed straight for the island and threw out a DS Robo. First fish. Was small, around 1lb, but at least the skunk was already done for the day. Worked my way around the island for nothing then went to the mouth of the channel that goes into that shallow marshy area. Switched to a senko and threw out. Landed a decent fish off the bat. I would say around 2.5lbs. worked the area for about an hour, got bored moved on. Made my way towards the dam while keeping to the bank of the backside of the lake when I came to an area that looked promising. I threw out and had a little backlash. As I let my bait drop while I fixed my birds nest, I began to reel and felt my line running. Set the hook, and fought a 6lb (I think, I didnt have a scale) that pulled me and my yak around for about five minutes.

Fished for about an hour more and called it a day by 11. Awesome lake. will be my new go to place.

didnt bother taking a pic of the first fish. Not worthy. Could anyone tell me what they think the weight of the third fish is? i held it as close to my chest so it the pic was more accurate. It felt freaking heavy pulling out

Nice fish, I found out the same thing when I took my kayak out for the first time on Perris. Boat control was a major issue for me and the wind didn't help matters. Casting, fighting fish, and keeping the boat in position is a real balancing act. It went better for me the second time around at Skinner, I felt like I was starting to get a better feel for things. Not like fishing from my tube but I can cover much more water in less time in the yak.
A little off topic but I was wondering if that is a Recon rod and if so what model is it and how do you like it?

Sure is! I got two of them. First small fish was caught on my PHX-C683ML and the bigger ones were caught on the PHX-C714MH. I love them, they are outstanding rods. Super light, great feeling in the hand, able to muscle fish around. And the they come with custom rod socks that have the Phenix logo printed on them along with the model number. A nice touch when buying a higher priced rod. Im ready to try out some of their other rods now for sure since the recons are basically the entry level series.

p.s. the 714 is especially nice for senkos. it gives them an oustanding action when rigged wacky style. I catch so many fish with that rig and this rod. And the 683 is phenomenal for drop shotting.

Thanks for the reply, that's what I wanted a new senko rod. I was looking at the 744 but the 714 might be perfect. I was also looking at the 723 for spinning, drop shot and other finesse techniques. I've read that they have a new line of rods coming out at icast this year and may be adding some new rods to the Recon series.
