Fished Perris today for lmb’s and gills. We arrived at the lake a little later that I wanted but went over to the island. We fished close to the shoreline early in the morning for some lmb’s around 15 inches average. I was using the drop shot. I had caught a few with some dinks in the mix but I actually came for the gills today. We moved out to about 15 to 20 ft depth and started with some small 1” grubs in the smoke flake color and also used some night crawlers. I fished the grubs on a Carolina rig and the worms where thrown on a fly line. We did not get the action I was hoping for but we landed a few fish. We moved around and stayed mostly on the east end for the lake all day. I metered a lot of suspended fish but could not get them to commit to a strike. I had to figure out a pattern because the bite was a slow.
I started to use the gps and lake map contours to figure out where the fish where hanging out. Every time I had a strike I would mark that location on the gps. After a while the depth, area and contour started to show up on the fishfinder and then I had a plan. I stayed in that area of the marks and pick off fish after fish. We caught fish on almost every cast. Red ear, blue gills and large mouth all in the mix. We grinded out a decent day of fishing today. Here is the average size gill we caught and a picture of a dear crossing the lake going over to the island.
