So what do you do in that situation? Cut the line? Were you able to pull it out of the water?
All I did was wrap a rag around my hand and the line & tried to lift it. Just got the head outta the water & the line broke at the knot. Remember I was using 80lb Spiderline and a palomar knot. This guy was BIG!
I'm going to make a special "bat-gaff". Blunt tipped hook that can be inserted into the rays mouth to lift it without harming it.

As far as recipes goes...Rays taste great but I won't kill one...It would be like killing a pet. :wink:

Heh, see how different we are? I was targeting a giant ray, it's great sport catching a 100lbs + ray in the bay. Best bang for your buck IMHO, esp. since I'm all about CPR anyway. When was the last time you hooked into a fish big enough to slide ya across a deck? (I'm pushin' 220lbs, btw. :wink: )

We used to fish the pier off of Admiral Kidds at the ASW base. There's some huge rays over there. We used to use the mackeral we would catch first off the pier then go for the bat rays. I was using a jigmaster 500 on a Penn stick and it is really fun especially when fighting big batrays. The drag screaming and when you almost get to the point of getting spooled. Gee those were the days!!!

I now use a hoop net...but previous to that, as long as you can see where your hooks at...I just ram my hand into their mouth and scoop 'em outa the water...but b4 I developed the balls to do this, I lost several ranging from 35 to 60 lbs at the back of Marina Del rey (Chase Park)
They cannot hurt ya with their mouth...just watch for your hook
