Palomar...it's what I use 99% of the time. It breaks at the line test and not before.

double san diego knot. its better than a palomar knot, because the line is not pinched on the ring.

Captain Norm Kagawa of the Shogun, jig slinger extraordinaire, ties his irons on with a double San Diego. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.

A San Diego knot that's doubled. :pillow:

Really, that's about what it is. Pass the line through the hook eye or lure ring twice, like you were going to tie a Palomar knot; then tie a San Diego knot with the doubled line. Makes for a somewhat bulky knot, but it's strong. It tends to be one of the strongest knots every year at the Izorline knot tying contest at Fred Hall.

Now, if you don't know what a "San Diego Knot" is, do a Google search. Plenty of references.

double san diego but i keep it alittle loose at the knot. i think it swims better this way.

I have never noticed any difference between a loose knot and a tight knot when using a lure that has a ring. smaller Line size, retrieve speed and picking a jig with a concave back (for surface) has always worked great for me. Unless you use a loop knot for topwater poppers and pencil lures.

Its a great knot for terminal tackle and for tying into large big game hooks (you will never have to worry about pulling to hard and breaking the knot on a long fight)

thanks for the input. does the size of the knot make a big difference in the swimming action of the jig? last fishing trip i tied single san diego and it held up for 20lb yellowtail. I used 9ft shimano teramar rod with newell 332 reel on 30lb. berkley big game.

30lb for surface iron is fine, some people use straight braided line (80Lb).
Be sure to pull snug on the loop and single tag end before trimming.

The newell 332 ( F series) is a great surface jig reel.

Never tied a double b-4. I did it today though. Any difference on how big the loop is?? I tried to get a small loop left over because i didn't think I was gonna trim the loop.

Does trimming the loop impede the knot at all?? is that a dumb question??

not at all, you need to cut the loop. you will end up with 3 tag ends and your main line.
