Since the weather has been really nice lately. I finally found the time this year to head out to my favorite spot. Went to the dfg website and quickly bought my fishing license and arrived at the spot around 2pm. The first couple hours of nonstop casting my arm was beginning to get sore and there were no signs of life. At around 5:30pm I finally got my first bite. He was obviously under aged so I quickly took a snapshot and released him.

About another hour goes by with no bites. The next cast my jig hits a dead stop. Felt like It got stuck on a rock and was kinda bummed out thinking that I was going to lose my jig. Until my reel starts screaming zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I knew it was a big fish by the way it fought but had no idea what it was. I saw some color from a distance and at first glance thought it was a huge shovel nose or batray. Thinking in my head that you cant catch halibuts this big from the shore. Until he jumps out of the water and there was no doubt it was a halibut. 20 minutes go by and the only thing he wanted to do was swim into deeper waters. Another 5 minutes go by and I was almost spooled. Tightened the drag a little bit and started to gain some ground. About another 10 minutes he was within my reach. He was weak and pretty much lifeless at this point. I didn't bring a net or grip so tried to tail grab him but his tail was too big. So I stuck my hand in his gill and hoisted him onto some flat rocks. My previous PB of 32" caught here on the same exact location. I was already shocked from catching a 32" and was thinking how am I ever going to beat this and how wrong was I. Just shows how persistence and patience pays off.

The LC was barely hanging on and it had a bent hook

Incrediable to say the least. That Halibut is a beast for sure. I bet she was moving in for the spawn and she met her fate. It's an incrediable feeling to be fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time isn't it sir ? I'd say that fish has to weigh 40lbs plus. The play by play on the fight had my heart pumping and you have set the bar even higher for me ...... The truth be known .... I would have let her go but that is just me.
That fish is a fish of a life time for sure !!
Thanks for sharing such an incrediable moment here with the FNN Family.

I couldn't let her go. Like I said she was lifeless when I landed her. I've released many flatties through the years. good karma I guess

WOW. I'm so used to camera tricks to try and make the fish look bigger so I'm always skeptical, but there were no camera tricks here and it wasn't needed... THAT'S A BEAST! Congrats!

Big FISH:Shocked:

Great story as well.
While I was reading it, I was thinking, cool you caught one the same size I caught from a boat. But noooo, the tease was in play here. Next thing I read is the length..........47" are you kidding me!!! That's incredible:High Five:. A fish of a lifetime from shore that's for sure. No dough your butt will be planted there again real soon.

Thanks for sharing the story and pic's.

I'm with you Bones. Beautiful fish, really amazing, but a shame to see it on a concrete driveway rather than heading out to the clear blue sea. No judgment. Just saying how if feels.

Consider halibut is $5-10 for a 5oz fillet at most grocery stores. That's a money saver right there. I wouldn't have even thought twice about it, that fish would be in my fridge at home if I caught it.

Amazing catch there, I'm still working on my first legal. Enjoy that fresh meat!

I am definitely going back out there this weekend. Good thing I only live 10 minutes away!

I've released my fair share of legals. There was just something about this one that I had to take home.

Your lucky it was out of gas. That thing would have gone crazy otherwise.
To land that baby without a net on the rocks would have been tough.

That 10' 6" stick must have been bent near the limit ? http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q229/yanina_photo/applause.gif
That Halibut was probably nearing the end of it's life anyways. http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab60/sPaRTaN1-_-1/Crazy/Walker.gif

My adrenaline was on full blast and the only thing on my mind was to not lose it. I should have had my gf record a video of the bendo. I guess I wasn't thinking straight. Well, there's always next time.

Nice catch! once in a lifetime for sure! dont listen to these guys, they're the same ones raping the surf each and every weekend and then after word spreads they blur their photos so ppl dont fish "their spots" haha halinazis

btw, this isnt a bass...its not a pond/lake...this is the ocean and ive spooked way bigger ones at malibu/seal beach/cherry beach 50''+

Awesome.. The fact that the fish was caught from shore is a huge accomplishment in its self but to land the fish from the rocks on light line makes the this catch even more amazing. That's going to be a tough one to beat but this catch further proves that anything is possible. Thanks for the report.
