The water temperature has dropped along Palos Verdes, but the Tradition had some live squid in the tanks Saturday morning, and we’d be trying to see if we could get something to bite along the kelp. With 22 anglers on board, we headed out of King Harbor, en route to see if the kelp would come alive with the help of some live squid.

One nice calico was pulled out of the kelp, but unfortunately the conditions went south as we were anchored, so Capt. Steven elected to hit some reefs nearby in a little deeper water. There some cookie-cutter sized reds came aboard along with some other miscellaneous rockfish. But fishing wasn’t as good as it has been in the past at those spots, so we headed out to the cod grounds to get some fish in the bags.

We hit a few hard bottom/rocky spots for the remainder of the day, and had a good bite on mainly boscos, barber poles, and grouper, but a couple nice reds came up as well. The grouper were voracious with the diamond jigs today. All it took was hitting bottom, winding up 10 turns, bouncing the jig a couple times, and you were on. The last spot was the best for the grouper. We also got 18 sculpin today on the cod grounds, and they were all jumbos (see first picture below).

The water temperature may have dropped, but at least we have some good rockfishing to fall back on, not to mention a great freezer filler! The Tradition will be keeping its eye on the kelp line, and hopefully some calicos and white seabass will pop back up again soon. Before the temperature dropped, both species showed some good potential along the kelp line. Hopefully it won’t be long before we get another go at some surface action! Until then, great times, great fishing aboard the Tradition!

hahaha
no wsb this time. Soon though. VERY soon... Gearing up for my season to start in a few days!!

Funny thing though, my buddy and I both caught a fish bigger than the JP fish. We both didn't enter though. That's just how things go!
