I tried a So.Cal. mountain creek yesterday for mixed action on some bows and browns; also checked out the flora:

Columbine and tiger swallowtail:

Cow parsnip (there was a grove of these large six foot tall plants in an area along the creek, resembling a scene from a fairy tale. I almost expected the rabbit or Cheshire cat from “Alice in Wonderland” to appear at any moment):

The most productive pattern –until I lost it to a tree branch- was my single hand tied parachute Adams. I also used the tried and true EHC with success along some new patterns that I purchased which are supposed to be good for mountain creeks: H&L, renegade, red and green humpy. I had difficulty seeing the EHC and the renegade on the choppy areas of the stream; plus, the renegade wasn’t as buoyant as I had hoped. However, every dry fly produced fish.
In fishing these small mountain waters, I have noticed that the casting skills that were taught recently in a club fly fishing class are pretty much out the window. Considering all the obstacles in the way, I’m lucky if I can even pull off a roll cast. Most casts are at close quarters and sometimes involve a pickup and lay-down but usually I find myself just buggy whipping or catapulting the fly into position -not very graceful.
Nevertheless, even though I still consider myself a rank beginner, each outing offers an increased confidence and satisfaction in fly fishing.
