As fishermen & women, and lovers of the outdoors, I feel sometimes in life we just need to STOP! And take a moment to remember the things in our lives that made us who we are, and what, in our younger days meant the most to us. That is what hit me a few months ago when I was planning my first trip of the year to the Eastern Sierra. I knew I was on a tight budget as things have been, well…. Let’s just say…… kinda rough lately.

As a youngster my thoughts always turned to summer when the day school got out my father and I would head for the Eastern Sierra for 2-3weeks(from 1975-1985& beyond). So this trip I decided to kinda retrace a few of the places that meant so much to us. Let me add, this month marks the 10th anniversary of his death so it meant a lot to me to do this.
Sorry not too much fish porn as I was flying solo so its kinda hard to take pics while fishing from a float tube and most fish caught were your average stockers and we all know what they look like. And I also practice c&r 95% of the time using jigs and worms with barbs pinched, I lose alot but it makes it more fun IMO.
I arrived Wed night and decided to camp in Lundy Canyon. This was a place that was our favorite and I can’t tell ya how much fun I had back in the day catching countless Brookies in the beaver ponds above Lundy Lake.

The ‘ol girl, been in the family for 22 years and has 300.000+ miles on her and she still gets me to paradise.
gotta love Nissan!

Thus morning
Fished Lundy and ran into a Corona Lake regular and fellow FNNers , Jeff(socal114) and Trout Killa, after a little catching up we hit the water and I fished until about 1. Started a little slow but it picked up about 8:30 and then it was game on, pretty much a fish every other cast for about an hour and a half. About 11 it died as the usual mid day duldrums set in. I pretty much stayed near inlet or the east side of lake. The best producer was red trout worms with “Grasshopper” Trout King jigs a close second. I’m not a fish counter so I'll just say I caught alot. I had one pole drifting crawlers, hoping Mr. Brownie would come out and play but all I caught was stockers.

Hard to tell but its a beautiful holdover

Lundy

Thurs Evening
I started at Trumbull hoping to get some Brookies but all I caught were a few typical stockers, then I hit Little Virginia, one of the places me and my Pops used to kill em. Let me just say this…. WFO. I couldn’t tell how many caught but it was crazy. I pretty much could only fish with one pole cuz it was too much with all the double hook-ups. Best producers orange worms and drifting an olive Wooly Bugger(Twin Lakes Special). I caught so many on the Bugger it pretty much fell apart. I need to add 95% of the fish caught at LV were under 10”, very small stockers but still lots of fun, but still no Brownie…..

A common thing at LV...Double hookup(picture is a tribute to Johnnyboy)

Fri Morning
Fished Silver Lake for about 2 hours for maybe 8 stockers and decided to head over too Gull about 10 and it was a lot better over there. This is a lake I have spent a lot of time on and it NEVER lets me down. Launched at campground and stayed on the west side form big rock to reeds. Once again red trout worms did the trick. Fished till bout 1 and caught LOTS. It was kinda funny as I am drifting past all these Powerbait fisherman in boats (I was out of their casting range) and they are like “what the &^$#!!” They weren't catchin much and didn't like me cruisin by with a double bendo, some of these guys were getting all pissed, I heard one drunk dude even say “F*** that guy!” Dang, I was like “really? Here you are, lucky enough to be up here fishing in paradise and your getting all pissed off…..WOW!” Felt like Corona for a little while.

Headed to Mammoth……….

Fri Evening
Wanted to hit Upper Owens fri. afternoon but was feelin kinda crappy so just chilled in motel room. Ended up hitting Lake George about 6pm and fished till dark and it was pretty good action on orange trout worms, and “Candy Corn” Trout King jigs, but got better when the sun went behind mountains and the Elk Hair Caddis was killin em, just drifting near inlets. All just average (or below) stockers……..still no brownie.

Lake George

Sat morning
Fished Lake Mary from 7-1 for tons of better size stockers and FINALLY something of size, I got lucky and hooked with a nice Alper, (caught on orange tw)going bout 3lbs. She gave me a heck of a fight. Best producers were orange tw’s and jigs in Candy Corn and Firetiger.

Kept three that took hook too deep plus the Alpers.

Still feelin kinda sick so I just chilled in my room Sat. afternoon and went back to George in the evening again and was pretty much same as night before.
I planned to hit up South Lake on the way home Sunday morning and say hi to fellow FNNers and Smitty but was feelin pretty crappy so I just headed home…………See ya next time.

Kinda a funny pic, I was at Lake Mary had to take a leak so I beached tube and when I returned this bear was checking out my tube, good thing I practice catch and release and there were no fish on a stringer. I gave her my best "I'm a bigger bada** than you" yell as she took off like her tail was on fire.......Phew:Shocked:

Here is what was working best for me. Also dipped plastics in Bite On Roe most of the time.

I just want to end with this, THANK YOU POPS!! For all the times we shared together up there!!
And to those who have children and enjoy fishing, know this:
The time you spend with them now will last their lifetime.
MAKE THE MOST OF THE MEMORIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
