Video of trip: (lost a big one right at the end )

This is from a few weekends back. Hiked in to one of my favorite secret spots in the Angeles National Forest. Blazing heat, 2+ miles in, no fun until I hit the water. Started off throwing a trout worm, also used a micro jig. Landed wild rainbow trout at almost ever pool I stopped at. Ran into some really quality fish for this small mountain stream in the San Gabriel Mountains/Angeles, up to 13''+. A few were real drag burned on my ultralite rod/reel with 2lb test line. Also encountered some awesome widlife, including a really impressive lizard that looked like a snake (see video below). In the end, I landed around 20 trout and lost many more on missed strikes or thrown hooks. Last fish I hooked, in a deep, fast rocky trout, was too tough to control on my ultralite and got away, a real bruiser for this small creek! Water was cold but still warming up, I will be revisiting this location soon to see how the warmer weather affects these rainbow trout.

I hope you all enjoy the photos and the video! I've recently received my Tenkara rod; I've been practicing with it at Ford Park, hopefully I'll have some videos of me using it on mountain trout streams soon!

Very cool, that looked like a lot of fun. That was a big Cali gator lizard dude, those babies have a quick temper man. We used catch those in O.C. back in the day. They get pretty stink'n big and will bite. Thanks for sharing...

That's a great post! From the video it looks like you were tossing in a trout worm on...what was that, a trout magnet? Or were you just wacky rigging it with bouncing it around? Some really nice fish; a lot bigger than I expected, and such beautiful markings and colors. I thought all the fish up there were itsy-bitsy.

The Lizard in the picture is a Western Fence Lizard ( Sceloporous occidentalis) .... Did you take the Tenkara rod with you ...
the lizard in the video is Aligator Lizard - Elgaria multicarinata

Good eye! I prefer tiny 1/64th oz micro jigs, tipped with soft plastic worms or plastic jig body. However, the only 1/64th I could find at Bass Pro Shops in Rancho are extra Trout Magnet jig heads. Not my favorite, but the hooks are quite sharp and do the trick! And yes, some of the fish further upstream are quite large, definitely a thrill on light tackle!

Great vid and pics. I can't wait to get back and hit those streams with you. Glad to see you're fitting some fishing in despite your heavy schedule.

Let's hit that secret spot in the mountains again; I have a new trout angler that wants to join us! Hope all is well!

Thanks! Just getting out of the house and hiking to the creeks can be a hassle in it self sometimes, lol!
