Even though I was dying to, I didn’t fish at all during Memorial Day weekend. But I did rack up a lot of “honey-do” points. Coming back in town Friday, I decided to hit the surf for a few hours Saturday morning and maybe Sunday also.
Report#1 - Saturday 6/2/12 5:30 am – 8:30 am
Did a quick check on conditions and decided to hit a Malibu spot I haven’t been to for a while. This spot is always hit or miss and inconsistent but it was worth a try.
What I didn’t know was that the enemy planned an ambush and caught me on a solo recon mission with no back-up. For the first time, in a very long time, I was outgunned and admit that I was caught unprepared.
Here we go… Round 1.
I started walking down to the sand at the first visible light on a heavy overcast and drizzly morning. I slowly wade in, run my hand through the surf and thought to myself, wow, feels kinda warm, probably somewhere in the mid 60’s. I scanned the surf and it was relatively flat 1-2 ft swells in slow intervals. The next thing that I noticed was the heavy bait fish presence. Large schools of bait fish rippling and scattering everywhere. They look small, only about 1-2 inches, but they’re here and in good numbers. I made a cast toward the first batch of scattering bait school and immediately get hit. After a brief tussle, a chunky 14” YFC came out of the surf and was quickly released. The water condition was pretty clear but there was a moderate amount of salad in the water, which is always annoying. I kept casting for the next 15 minutes and landed two more YFC’s and plenty more bumps on the LC. They're active this morning and this was certainly a good sign. Then to my left, I saw a huge disturbance as a big school of bait fish goes flying out of the water every which way… I flicked the LC thirty yards past all the commotion and began the slow & steady retrieve. About 20 feet out, I saw a faint flash of white and at that instant, the LC get stopped. Here we go… fish on! This wasn’t a YFC, much stronger and after a minute or so, it was laying there, shimmering on the sand. Did a quick measure, snapped a couple of pics and it was on its way home. I didn't know it then, but it was only a Scout, sent to test the strength of my arsenal.

No more than 5 minutes goes by, I get hammered again… Big fish, very big fish, I was thinking to myself WSB all the way, just need to weather this first panic run, then turn it and it’s a done deal. Another minute goes by and this thing isn’t slowing, I look down at my spool and I have less than half of the 180 yds of #12 line left. I tend to set my drag a bit tight and this fish is an absolute brute and still pulling. At ¼ spool I decided to button down and turn the fish, it's now or never… I will make this part quick, 10 seconds later, I reeled in my LC with two hooks bent out almost straight. These are the saltwater nickel plated owners on the LC, not the black tin freshwater trebles.
Wow, I just got smoked by a monster. Even though I didn’t see it, I’m almost certain that it was a WSB from the pure strength and speed of the fish. A large Leopard Shark, Shovelnose or Ray is strong, but more of a sluggish fight and they tend to run parallel to the beach, not straight out to the open sea.
I quickly shook it off, cut off the damaged LC, tied on another one and re-engaged. For the next half an hour to forty five minutes, I hooked up to another 6 White Sea Bass but only landed three, all shorts at 23”, 24” and 24”. The three I lost weren’t as big as the first one I lost, they just managed to pop off during the fight somehow. No pics as I have made a conscious decision to cut down the number of pics taken of shorts of any species. We all know what they look like, your friends will believe you and those who don’t, doesn’t matter anyway. This directive has been communicated with all S.W.A.T. members… my philosophy have always been to lead by example.
The action slowed a bit and I started making my way further down the beach. I caught three chunky Calico Bass while working the boilers. Here are the pics of a couple of them.

Then in the distance, I saw a familiar figure in the surf working towards me. There are only a couple of guys I know who hit the surf in shorts and sandals. Even at a distance, I can see him fighting and beaching a fish… and then another. He made his way to me and sure enough, it was Albert (Jinbow). Albert was out of breath as he was telling me that he just landed his first two WSB ever! A 22” and a 23” fish. I congratulated him and told him about the Beast that I lost earlier. I said that there is a wolf pack in the surf terrorizing the bait fish and suggested that we start working back towards the spot where the bite started for me this morning. So we started working our way back up the beach.

Albert was the next to get bit. A short while later, he landed his 3rd White Sea Bass of his young, but promising surf fishing career. :Envious:

We worked our way back to the exact spot where I was at grey light and the fireworks started again… The water was very clear and we can see bait fish schools cruising in the surf. All of the sudden, you would see big silver flashes as the WSB was making their passes thru them. On a retrieve I saw a huge silver flash right on top of my LC as it disappeared in a huge swirl and a big tail slap. I kid you not, this fish was a 40” WSB easy! :EyePop:
I looked over at Albert and saw that his eyes were as big and round as a white man’s eyes, lol. :Big Smile: The fish took off straight out to sea towards the kelp beds, faster than anything I’ve ever experienced. I told myself, I wasn’t going to let this one get away… I had to turn this fish before it makes it to the outer boilers and the safety of the kelp. I gave the drag dial a half a turn (which was already snug) and my rod immediately felt the stress of the fish as I attempt to turn its head. A few seconds later my line started to move sideways… cool, I thought, this fish is turning… It made a blistering run sideways but not towards the beach and I had to follow it, scrambling sideways in the surf. My rod held high to clear the boilers that was close to the beach. Albert running right behind me, snapping away with the camera. Probably about 6-8 minutes into the battle (which seems like an eternity), the fish turn towards the ocean and power its way into the kelp beds and the action stopped. I looked down at my reel and saw I had less than ¼ of the spool left. I put the reel in free spool to see if the fish could make its way out of the kelp… after a couple of minutes waiting… waiting… waiting and nothing, I tugged and tugged at the kelp and finally was able to free the LC. A small consolation but I would have offered a dozen LC’s to Poseidon for that fish. Disappointed and disgusted that I got smoked not once, but TWICE in one session, I sat down for a minute to catch my breath, collect my thoughts and to recover from the a** kicking that I just received, lol. Albert did his best to try and console me, but I told him that it’s not that big of a deal, it will bother me for about a day or two, that’s it. It’s just part of the equation and it comes with the territory. We land more than we lose them, so it’s all good… but it does sting a bit, that’s for sure.
Here are some battle pics that Albert took.

Full bendo trying to turn the Beast.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/Wingnut%2011/Untitled.jpg
I told Albert to keep fishing… and as I was watching him make probably 4-5 casts to the exact spot, I saw his rod get loaded up and go on a full bendo! Line screaming out of his spinning reel with #10 line. I rushed to his side and saw that he was losing line fast and was having trouble getting control of the fish. I told him to calm down and keep the rod tip high, let the fish fight the rod. Tighten the drag up a bit and pump up and crank down to gain line. Well, it worked… the fish started coming back in and he is gaining back precious mono. I saw a big wad of kelp and said to Albert, “Hey, steer clear of that big wad of floating kelp…” Wouldn’t you know it, as soon as I said that, the fish made a sudden run right into it and wrapped the line on it. :Rolls Eyes: I knew that if that kelp don’t come off, he will probably lose that fish. So I waded in up to my chest, bobbing up and down in the waves, grabbed the kelp and broke it off piece by piece off his line. Albert was calm and under control the entire time. A few minutes more goes by and a nice legal WSB washed up on the sand. Great job of fighting by Albert and he didn’t even hesitate in declaring that he was going to release his first legal and PB White Sea Bass. :Thumbs Up:

Lieutenant Bones comes walking up right as Albert was releasing his fish. I hope you're not too late for the party Mike… I looked at my watch, 8:30am. I had to leave them biting and get to the office. But I wished them luck and headed out. Gonna spend the rest of the day sulking and licking my wounds... Then shake it off, because tomorrow is another day... Round 2!

I found out later that JerryG also came down to take a shot in the afternoon and got smoked too… Then Mike (Bones) got schooled by another monster during the evening bite. But I’ll let them tell the story. There are some monsters lurking in the surf right now… go and get yours!
Albert, always fun fishing with you kid. You got the determination, enthusiasm and the right attitude to succeed. Congratulations on landing FOUR of your first ever White Sea Bass from the surf in ONE session! That is quite an accomplishment. :Envious:
Thanks for the nice PM and I’ll see you back out in the surf soon. :Big Grin:
Take care everybody!

S.W.A.T. Brings Out the Heavy Artillery - Round 2!
Chance at Redemption and I Brought Back-Up This Time!
After an exciting & successful morning session Saturday morning that left me feeling unfulfilled, I headed back to the same A.O. on Sunday, but this time with back-up!
Saturday night, I shot out texts and PM’s to the rest of the Team giving them intel on the morning’s mayhem in the surf. Almost immediately, my Blackberry started blowing up… whoever wanted to join me on Sunday for round 2 were welcome to come.
I told everybody to upgrade to heavier line & gear for this assault. Gave them the coordinates and kept our fingers crossed that the WSB Brutes will hang around the area for an extra day. Condition shows that swells are picking up a bit, but we were hoping for similar results. Saturday night, I stripped my Plutons of #12 line and loaded it with #15 and decided to throw the 130 LC.
My S.W.A.T Brothers showed up in force at grey light. Answering the roll call was Mike (Bones), Mikey (Exfactor), Robert (Murrieta Angler), John (Klocked), Bill (Which Way Out), Dan (SP Dan), Marc (BSP) and his Dad Nick. Jonathan (ToadsToadsOnly) also showed up with his buddy, in their kayaks! All was ready to hit the enemy, and hit them hard!
Unfortunately, conditions changed quite a bit within the last 24 hours. Big swells were rolling in stirring up the clarity of the surf, the salad condition went from moderate the day before to nightmare on Sunday. Worst of all, the heavy presence of bait fish was gone, down to a scarce few schools here and there. :Crying:
We gave it a go while fighting the conditions and a tough bite for the first few hours. Around 8:30 or so I told everybody, let get outa here and go get some breakfast! Mikey, being the wise and knowledgeable fishing Yoda like he is objected. He said let’s keep fishing for another couple of hours right through the high tide. These fish are funny, they might show up at any time. So we all decided to stick it out a while longer and I’m glad that we did, thank Mikey! :Big Grin:

Report#1 - Saturday 6/2/12 5:30 am – 8:30 am

:Big Grin:

Report#2 - Sunday 6/3/12 5:30 am – 11:00am
:Big Grin:

I suffered a Skunk but still had a great time fishing with my Brothers. Thank you for the company gentlemen, your friendship means the world to me… :Group Hug:
