going out to pyramid on sunday with my dad on his boat to do some lmb/smb fishin'...we might try for stripers at some point and i was wondering how drifting bait actually works? is there a certain method or technique that's best? do you just let the bait sink to the bottom and reel up a few cranks or is there actually a way of measuring how much line you have out to get it to a certain depth? i'm not asking for any secrets, just looking to get pointed in the right direction with it, thanks!

Use anchovies and spray it with a little WD-40.

You can get a line counter from Cabela's that fastens onto the rod and will tell you how much line you have out. Great for trolling too. Or you can make 15 hand "pulls" of about a foot each and figure you're down 15 feet. In either case, if you've got wind and current, you may have to take a drift angle into account.

I always wondered about this too though as it seems most striper experts prefer to tie up to something or anchor rather than drift—not an easy undertaking in 280 feet of water, which makes me think drifting just isn't that productive. Am I wrong, experts?

drifting works very well at the mid ,i like using chovies i will usally pop there heads off hook um and drop them in, if theres little or no wind then i fly line them if its windy i will put on a couple big split shots to get them down the dam area in between the island has always been good,,,,,,,,t/o,,,,,,,,,,,and wd 40 is against the law to use in most places,,,,,,,,shad spray is good,,,,,,,,,,

You're spraying a petroleum based product on something that is going into the water?

I hope you're kidding, right?

Don't spray WD-40 in the water. It's just not smart. Thee are plenty of scents to add to a bait if you like and WD-40 should be excluded from this list.

Really?

In that case, I'll pick up a few cans to replace my Pam cooking spray.

Dunno, you might actually fare better with the Meat & WD40 Aioli than a value meal from there....
