Report:
Finally got done with the move and unpacking at the new place. I decided to fish the high tide this afternoon in a new AO. Got good intel from a reliable source the night before.*

The wife went up to Long Beach for the day and that gave me all day to fish. Well, it didn't take all day. Only 1.5 hours to catch the right kind to bring home to dinner tomorrow night for the wife's birthday.*

When I got to the beach, parked my truck and thanked the lord for a beautiful day, another day to enjoy it, and hope to kill one of his creations today.*

When I walked down to*the sand and surf was dark with salad. I thought to myself, " aww crap, maybe we're going to have take out again for diner!" But I had a mission and didn't want to go back home empty handed and to "straighten up" the apartment at 1215 in the afternoon.*

So I toughed it out and kept walking south while making a few cast past the surf hoping to get past some of the salads.*

After 10-15 cast I got a big bump but it came unbutton. The next cast I saw a short halibut jump after my LC.*

Feeling good about what had just happened I fan cast that area some more for nothing but salad.*

It would be cool IF I'm a vegetarian, but today I'm out for blood!!*

Pulling up salad got very old very fast so I decided to go on a short hump and look for "better fishing conditions"*

After about a mile of hoofing it I finally found a 100 yd stretch of water that looked very promising. Still had salad on every cast but something about this area looked and smelled "fishy".

To my 10 o'clock I noticed 2 young men fishing on their surf boards using plastics and pulling up 1 short and one legal halibut so I decided to poach it.*

4 cast later and I was hooked up. At first I thought it was a huge piece of underwater kelp. But when I got it into eyes view I noticed the tail. "hell yeah!" I said to myself, "this is *definitely a legal fish!!"*
*
Just when I though this was going to be an easy fish she made a few short runs and gave me a little fight.*

She measured out 24.5" when I finally go her to shore.*

I was happier then fly on crap right now because this is my 1st San Diego legal and my 1st legal halibut in about 3-4 years!*

Took a quick snap and continued to fish some more.*

This is where it went down hill and I knew I had to stop fshing for the day, go home, and be thankful with what I got. *

After that fish I thought if she's there her girlfriends and boyfriends are close by also.*

3rd cast and I noticed a bird flying low from my left to my right. I remember thinking to myself, "man it'll be cool as crap if I can cast and hit this SoB." and sure enough I hooked it by the wing and the bird comes crashing down and hit the water. As it hit the water my line breaks!*

Realizing I can't do anything about it and thinking that was pretty cool I took out another LC and tied it on. This was probably the worst knot I've ever tied in all my years of fishing. But I was still excited from the fish and wanted to catch more I didn't think about the knot.*

1st cast. The LC and the bird goes flying!!!!*

Lesson of the day: Buck fever can be costly! Take your time and tie the right knot.*

I guess that's my offering to Poseidon, maybe Lucas will find it one day...hahahaha.*

After that I "PSMO" and took the long walk of pain and joy back to my truck!*

That's my report, thanks for reading and God bless. They're out there, go get 'em!

Thanks SP Dan. In combat, there's caualties on both side but I knew that going in. Hahaha. After that I went to the local tackle shop and replaced the Green Ghost, so it was a $60 Halibut hahaha.

Tomorrow I'll be back to claim more lives!!! Haha

Wingnut, small price we pay for the love of the sport.

Let's calculate this...$40 bucks for a halibut dinner

VS.

Going out and paying $50-$100 for dinner, or if you're really going to splurge $300 (I like expensive wine ). Dude, you made out.

Congrats on the seek and destroy mission! Awesome report!

BTW - Thinking about hitting the bird, hitting the bird, losing the LC...qualifies as bachi (japanese for bad karma)

Awesome Report!!!

I am glad you toughed it out. There is a lot of junk in the water but the fish are still out there, fatter than ever! I think Poseidon must have thought " My creatures aren't good enough for you, well lets see how you like losing LC's!!!" hahahaha
Your loss is my gain ;) If i come across those patterns in N. SD I will be sure to catch something with them before returning them to you!

Tell your wife happy birthday from me and the rest of FNN

Posiedon may win this battle 2-1 but he didn't win the war. I'll be out there again tomorrow. Maybe next time I'll claim a WSB, a Hali, and a huge spotfin from him :p. Now that m0nk got his grove back I'll be pounding more sand. I have to do something since I'll be retiring soon hahahaha

Thanks for the birthday wishes bro. "happy wife, happy life!"

Congrats, nice fish!

Catching a bird would be my least favorite catch from the surf. I often see seagulls eyeing my lucky craft as I'm casting it. I give them a little stear down to keep them away ffom my pricey lures... lol Last thing i want is an angry bird while I'm triing to hold them down.

Hey douch bag thats animal cruelty you openly admitte d. To seeing if u can hit it then hook it instead u should loose more then you LC i think ur fishing lisence should be revoked for the year for improper use of your gear the only time u can defend ur self against the sea life is if its harassing u

Thanks for the name calling "person I don't know" but if you read my post I wasn't trying to intentionally hit the bird and lose my LC nor did I want to reel in and handle the bird. I just simply saw the bird flying in low from the corner of my left eye about 25 meters and though to myself "what if I hit this thing".

I wasn't trying to lose my brand new, just used that day LC in that manner and for damn sure I'm not cruel to animals. As a hunter and a fisherman, like most, I respect all of our resources both breathing or not.

For you to come out and say I should lose my fishing license for what I "intended" to do is ignorant and pretty immature on your part.

Why can't you just read, enjoy, and maybe learn something from the post.

Is killing the Halibut considered " animal cruelty also?

Have a great day/week, God bless you and tight lines!

And for your information, in my own opinion you shouldn't harm no animal EVEN IF it's harassing you. Of its attacking you where you're in serious danger then you can defend yourself. If its just trying to "take" your bait to eat then what harm is it to you.

Woman, children, and animals are a no no in my book!

***To everyone else, thanks for the kind words***

LCFM110 = Luck Craft Flash Minnow 110

That's the go-to lure for Halibut fishing from the shore/surf.

The fm110 are popular because there easy to use, I myself use a lot of swimbaits for me the hook to land ratio is much higher.

Well, to be honest it sounded in your post that you were trying to hook the bird,"man it'll be cool as crap if I can cast and hit this SoB." And you actually thought "that was pretty cool " when you did hit it. Then in your rebuttal you changed your verbage to"what if I hit this thing". Pretty easy to see why someone might be upset by your original wording.
God's price for hitting one of His creatures was taking your LC. Not really a trade for the pain you inflicted on the bird, but hopefully a lesson learned.

Pain inflicted in the bird? Maybe I should have wrote....my line got caught up on the birds wings. As the bird was descending onto the water my line snapped! After a few shakes the bird was up and flying again without any harm and I didn't see the lure on it. I'm 90% the LC is in the water or drafted on the sand by now.

Oh and BTW great report with this vein your 1st post and all. Go get 'em and awesome pics and nice fish! Hahaha
