Good Afternoon, it has been a while since my last report and as such I am starting a new thread for this event. I was blessed to be included on a last minute beach attack for those ever elusive BIG FISH! This invitation was also a well timed assault to my benefit, hopefully bagging my S.W.A.T Challenge Fish from a list predetermined by S.W.A.T Command. The A.O was well known for harboring such enemies of the trenches so I came prepared to do battle not only in support of, but also for my own purposes ……... Meeting up with Pontoon and transporting ourselves to the rendezvous point we met with Murrieta Angler and Bachiboy for a short briefing and began our descent into the A.O………….but I digress.

Let me first say that this has been one hell of a ride, and partly the cause of my lack of reports (and frankly just a bunch of skunk sessions).Between making plans, looking at Intel, recon, gear maintenance and that boss I have riding my butt sitting at a PC typing took on non-essential status. But none the less there has been some great sessions, got to meet some great people and fellow FNNers. I have to say there are some of the best folks here on FNN and S.W.A.T, memories and good times that I will cherish a lifetime no doubt milestones in my life. I have said this before that my only regret is not being a part of it sooner. Terry, Robert, Don………….I can’t thank you enough for the day. Arthur, thank you for help making it possible for us all. I could go on and on with the knowledge learned, shared tactics, actions critiqued and friendships made. There is an incredible amount of expertise here amongst the masses which my friend is truly awesome!
The report for which I am about the express to you combined with the original Mission Quest report covers the last seven months with this report looking at the period from about X-Mas last year to present. The past year has been tough, everybody is feeling the effects of the economy, my family as well. Things are being stretched further, spread thinner and pushed harder. Financially we have had to make priority funding decisions which meant cutting some of the available monies towards fishing which in itself causes more limited possibilities. God willing and the river don’t rise we all will make the turn soon…………now, on to the topic at hand………..BIG FISH!
Now I have been hittin some beaches and harbors with successand the following is some of what I have been getting with notations:

On the hunt with fellow FNNer Dan Corey we were able to findsome shortys:

With the winter storms bringing big surf, and less then desirable conditions, put me in recon mode and was able to find some decent inner harbor areas with fish some of which were firsts for me:

Getting to fish spots that may never get a chance to again and meet new people creating new and lasting friendships:

Now, with that “brief” recap outta the way it’s time forwhat we all are here for. It is a deep and humbling feeling being recognized foryour hard work and asked to join this elite group of anglers. Never in my wildest dreams had I thought I would be here today. Most if not all of my fishing has been freshwater creeks and lakes of the central California high country so getting involved with this from the prodding of a senior experienced member was purely happenstance……..I wish I had the skills necessary to accurately describe my appreciation for the opportunity but I just couldn’t say enough so for now……………..Thank You, thank you very much! To meet such a large amount of folks so willing to give and never holding out a hand asking for something in return……happy just being able to help.
“The road to glory is paved by sacrifice and pain and those not willing to go the distance will never truly understand the meaning of brotherhood”

Date: Sat, May 19, 2011
Time: 0600-1230
A.O: Classified
Terrain: Rocky beach with sandy sections
Weather: Overcast but mild, light breeze turning to warmsunny condition.
Surf: 3-5 ft but breaking wayyy outside.
Tide: +1.5 incoming to a 3.5’ peak.
Water temp: upper 50’s to lower 60’s
Clarity: Good with slight kelp and ell grass
Bait: L/C Flash Minnow 110 custom Metallic Sardine on a 9’Shimano Clarus using a Shimano Spirex 4000 spooled with 50lb (12lb equal) PowerPro 8 braid.

Upon receiving my challenge fish list some seven months ago I honestly didn’t think it would go this long based mostly on the fact that Ihad already been catching some of what was on that list already but it didproof itself eluding……hitting the beach with fellow members with this challenge being a target for today it seemed as though all the stops where being pulled as we got down to the water and began our assault. The level of talent and experience here quickly revealed itself with the organized and timely work by all with notmuch being said everyone moved down the beach perfectly covering every possible fishy spot. With the occasional hand jester, quick whistle or nod of the headas we moved along the first catch was made early with Pontoon getting his firstshort Halibut. “yeah baby, fish on!”
I didn’t get but two pics all day myself but hopefullyothers did and will post here to share. I was using a rod I haven’t been usingfor a while and being a very fast rod tip every bump got me excited, bumpingevery piece of structure had me “Oh, oh, oh………wait for it, wait for it”………Notsure what it is that gives you that feeling but it just seemed like today wasit….”today this ends, I feel it in my bones and everyone brought their “A” game”…….what a awesome sight to behold! It wasn’t long after that I was rewarded with that familiar tug, tug…….hook set and it was fish on! Nice head shakeconfirmed what I hoped, HALIBUT……..with the rod El Bendo and a short fight Ilanded my first of the day, a short Halibut. Quick C,P& R (sorry, not mycamera got this one) we were back at again in a timely manner had us movingdown the beach. Noticing everyone looking down the beach I saw the fish whisperer Pontoon with fish on and landing his PB 23.5” Halibut.
The bite seemed to settle somewhat which gave us time toreach our turn around point and head back to our original trench location nowthat tide has peaked this area will be fishy if I ever saw fishy before.
Making a few last casts before coming out and going back theother way I wasn’t really expecting much but at one point after retrieving it almost 25% back to me I get a hit, nothing really huge or hard mind you but agood solid hit and hook set quickly said “hey, this is something big” and then that quick it went Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…………..thisfish wanted to be in Catalina and brother let me tell ya it felt like it wasgonna make it there. At this point my adrenaline is pumping and my mind isgoing through a check list of items…….”ok, drag seems ok, rod tip angle good, hand placement………etc, etc………but don’t let this calm cool typing fool ya, mymind was going “YEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA…………..HELLYA……..BIG Fing FISH ON! WHOOO HOOOOOOO CHECK IT OUT………….!
With the drag slowing some I was able to gain some ground and by now Robert, Terry and Don where close with help if and when needed.Trying to keep myself from jumping right outta my rubber pants it was tough to keep calm. As soon as this fish felt like it was being pulled back to shore once again it was Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzz…………….this time I think it wanted Santa Rosa Island so Zzzzzzzzzz, here we go……..rod El Bendo in half and watching the line empty from the spool was well, frankly…………DAMN COOL! Went back and forth like this a few times, I get some, the fish would take it back and at one point I can remember feeling my arm and grip feeling the workout…….switching hands briefly to shake out the no blood flow tingles……..switch back and pull…..real…..pull…..reel…….pull…..reel………and at one point colors surfaced and revealed itself………..YEAH! WSB!
Careful timing and slide up the sand Was this wonderfulcreature rewarding me:
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w64/nippletwister_photos/Fishing/Mission051912a.jpg
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w64/nippletwister_photos/Fishing/Mission051912b.jpg

Good thing Robert had placed himself between the fish andthe water because with me pulling and the fish hitting the wet sand was like aanchor and “bing” the L/C comes unlatched. No worries, this fish was had and the excitement was almost uncontrollable but had to keep a cool head for a quick photo and get her back to water but sadly upon closer inspection she had suffered damage that proved life ending.
Besides not being able to return this awesome creature back to the surf I was truly blessed with this catch, this being my first catch of this magnitude and getting my acceptance to S.W.A.T was and is a true honor. As I sit typing this my phone has text message showing our LT and the Commander having another epic morning, nice job fellas. At the time of my catch pics where taken and the word was quickly relied to Command Central and shortlyafterward my phone was non-stop messages of congrats……….

Thank you, thank you all for your friendship, knowledge and willingness to share……we are truly blessed.
There are two people I wished I could have shared this withbut I know they are watching….I miss you both…..

Now, whats this “leader board” thing????? Cause with allthis good luck as soon as I get back from Vegas I will be hittin the surf………….hey boss, I call ya from the casino and explain………..hehehehehe….

Way cool………

Way to go my S.W.A.T. Brother! :Beer Toast:

First of all....I've been waiting a long, long, long, long time to say this to you John......."Congratulations on completing your challenge" :Thumbs Up: and "welcome to S.W.A.T. my brother"! You've not only met the S.W.A.T. challenge but you took it over the top...."BIG TIME" my friend!! I knew this day would come for you! I never stopped believing in you, your skills or your abilities! It was always.....just a matter of time!

I remember that day at Broad Beach when we both agreed that we wanted to complete our S.W.A.T. Central Command challenges with something more... than simply a large perch. Remember that day John? Well....you stayed true to your words with this beautiful White Sea Bass!

"With patience......all good things will your will come your way.... at the correct time"!.... My grandfather would say this to me at times when I was a younger man and his words still ring loud and clear in my ears to this day as I have witnessed this "in you"...my friend... exercising such patience is a special gift that not all people possess! I've found that with patience comes.... "Blessings".

I can see clearly why the S.W.A.T. Central Command had selected you for such a challenge....you definitely have in you......what S.W.A.T. represents..... and I'm proud to refer to you as my S.W.A.T. Brother!

Your determination, fortitude and your continuous focus finally paid off for you my friend!:Big Grin:
A job well done....well done indeed my friend!

Thanx John....for the great "Mission accomplished" report with pic's my friend!

PS....I have written this response to your report three times prior to this one and they were all lost due to a weak internet connection at Big Bear Lake ....so I hope that my words of joy for your accomplishments finally reach you this time!

Your S.W.A.T. Brother,

SP Dan <"))><

John,

Now I think I read something about this boss you have riding your butt, man I just can't stand those demanding bosses!........get this! get that!........what did you get this for? what did you get that for? Damn, the nerve of some of these guys when you need to concentrate on getting a SWAT Mission Accomplished!

We started talking about this special op mission late in the week and I just had this feeling that something big was going to come out of it. This I know because of the message I recieved from the SWAT Commander that ended in...."or else someone is going to face the SWAT Trial board" I sure as heck didn't want it to be me so my butt was ready Saturday morning at 0-400. We were going to make something Big happen and I knew with the guidance of an award Winning SWAT Member , Murietta Angler, there was a very good chance something big would happen as well as, if needed, I may have a good man on my side at the trial.:Envious:

All kidding aside John,

I knew how important it was for you to get your mission accomplished from the moment your challenge was offered to you from the Commander. You were there with me on several of my attempts to make the cut and after some of the recollections of good memories I shared with you about the Good times I've had with some Truly Good People you saw why it was so important to me.
Now, as your mission has progressed you too have experienced what it is like to share the surf with Truly Good people. Each time I was able to hit the beach with you and after every time you told me about your most recent attempts I could see the effort you put into each outing was nothing less than your best effort.
I had no doubt that you were going to complete this mission because for as long as I have known you there is no quit in you at all. That has never been an option for you and yesterday that trait paid off in a Big way!

Congratulations John...........you earned it My Friend!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

Here's a few pics I have that will go into my records as one of my favorite days............

I have to star by saying that I shared the sand with three guys that had one thing in mind.........."Get NT inducted or pontoon gets a trip to the Trial Board"

John, Robert and Don, Thanks for a very memorable day!.....

Just about halfway through this battle I'm starting to get a little nervous. I remember looking over at John and had to think "I'm not seeing a guy who is cool, calm and collected, I'm looking at a guy who knows he's got the fish that will confirm his induction into SWAT and he's trying to bring in a fish that wants no part of it!"

One other thing that I now think is so cool now that I think back on it. Robert and I had time to discuss what type of fish it was, how big a fish it was and how much longer it was going to take......It was as if time stopped so we could talk.....Of course John didn't think so.

It's big!.........

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/12-05-19%20SWAT%20NT/IMG_0635.jpg

I am so glad to able to call you my brother John. Your a great guy and a helluva dedicated fisherman. When the going got tough you stuck to your guns, and just kept on fighting. Every time I go fishing with you you teach me something new, which I appreciate immensely. I was fishing when I received a text, and somehow I just knew it was Arthur telling me about you completing your challenge. When I checked my phone to confirm it I yelled "YAHOO!!!!" I was so happy for you, and I could just picture the excitement you had been feeling. Things are more rewarding the harder you work for them, which in my book makes you the most deserving man I have met.

Congratulations again John, I am proud to call you my brother and my friend. I wish you the best of luck in your future fishing endeavors, because you truly deserve the best.

Well...I just finally made it to my PC and John my friend......This inspirational report is incrediable to say the least. You begun your challenge during a time of the season when all surf anglers were hoping for even a decent perch bite. You stuck to your guns and remained true to your new found love for the surf enviroment and the challenge of putting some large target species on the sand. I've seen you through many disappointments and hardships but never the less.....You got her done with dignity and style.
As I read through your report I just kept grinning bigger and BIGGER. Actually this is more of an ADVENTURE with an accomplished goal interwoven with many new found friendships.
Congrats once again my friend and welcome to the family.

NOW ATTACK THAT LEADER BOARD SOLDIER ....... SWAT BABY !!

First of all, I have never seen a person so happy to catch a fish!!! :Dancing Banana: :Big Grin:

Rewind to Thursday....I get a text from Terry (Pontoon) asking how things were down South.
I replied back that we should go fishing on Saturday and also to invite John (Nipple Twister).
He tells me that they were thinking about going to HB or somewhere local to their houses. I reply back and say they "NEED" to head South with me.....It Was Confirmed...

Well, the rest is history!!!

John,
That was a great fish to enter the S.W.A.T. Brotherhood with.
It seems that all the recent additions to our group of friends are just nailing the big ones..
It couldn't have happened to a better person and I for one was happy to witness it in person.
The way you hugged that fish had me busting up and I will never forget the look on your face...:Big Grin:

Terry,
It was an honor to be there with you and your truly good friend.
He is a lucky man to have you in his life as a boss, mentor and someone to confide in with things get rough.
I know this because I looked back at the two of you and noticed the gleem in your eye as John was explaining the catch all over again...
A congratulations is also in order for you as well for your new PB Halibut. It won't last though, you are too nice a guy...:Big Grin:
Last, thank you very much for lunch, the company was great...

Don,
What a surprise to see you that morning and also a bummer at the same time.
I hope things went well at your afternoon destination, well, as well as they could go...:Rolls Eyes:
There will be other fishing stories with us together, I am sure of it.

Guys, it was an ABSOLUTE pleasure getting to fish with all of you. It was an incredible surprise when you came rolling up. Thank you so much for letting me tag along on this adventure!

I think the story pretty much says it all, but let me just add this...
Someone asked me if it was a bummer that John hooked up and I didn't get one. I try to live by these words...don't ever frown on another man's success, just be glad that you were lucky enough to share it with him.

Thanks again guys...you helped take a HUGE edge off a very dark day in my life.

I have some picts to add to the mix. Enjoy...

Terry taking his measurements...notice John's unphased in the background and still concentrating on the task at hand.

“Success doesn’t always belong to the swift or the strong. Sometimes, it belongs to those who keep on running.”

John, you exemplify this quote. Your patience, dedication and perseverance in the past few months have been remarkable and an inspiration to us all. :Big Grin:
Congratulations, you are now officially inducted into the S.W.A.T. family. But you’ve been a Brother to us all along. :Group Hug:

When I saw the photo of you embracing that WSB, it brought the biggest smile to my face. :Big Smile: Don’t get too attached to that fish buddy, there will be plenty more on its way, bigger, stronger, and prettier. :!!!:

It seems that the injury to the bottom of the gill area with these White Sea Bass is pretty common. They will never survive this type of injury, so if you catch a legal size one suffering this type of trauma, keep and enjoy it! :Envious:

John, as a prospect, you have experienced first-hand the S.W.A.T. camaraderie and familiar with our code of conduct. As a member, I know you have what it takes to uphold the creed and I’m proud to call you a friend and a brother.

Robert & Terry, thanks guys for guiding John towards the finish line and being there to share and celebrate his special moment. :Thumbs Up:
If I was there, lunch would have been on me!

Oh, BTW, keep an eye out for a Fed Ex package... your "welcome" package is on the way.

Thanks Dan.......and hell yes I remember that day, we where close a few times huh?
Hittin the surf with ya had me changing my tactics and whatta know, seemed to work.......
I have to admit, you sent me that video of your time share in BB, nice! Jealous......

Pontoon, Terry, Boss, Kemo, Friend......thank you. Thanks for sharing, having trust in my ability, giving up just the right amount of info to get me thinking without giving it away and your where right, couldn't find a better bunch of people. I know you have said it many times and it continues to proof itself with the knowledge, insight, willingness, want to share and concern for their fellow angler.
As for this day, you drove, covered the parking, brought the ice chest (now theres confidence for ya), supplied the catching LC (which I will pay forward), took all these cool pics AND paid for lunch.........true S.W.A.T style, thx:Thumbs Up: It has been a challenge, frustrating, rewarding, exciting and most of all an outlet, a place to go if nothing else to take my mind away from the grind.........

Congratulations again John, I am proud to call you my brother and my friend. I wish you the best of luck in your future fishing endeavors, because you truly deserve the best.
Lucas

Lucas, I was a pleasure to have met you and to watch your excited interest back some months ago and it was impressive. Thanks for all the kind words and your "from the outside looking in" approuch........who says a fisherman has to wear waders and why not a tie?
Thx buddy, good times with many more to come..............hows that move coming along?

Bones, when Pontoon first starting sharing things about this great group of anglers he knew, and he couldn't say enough about you all, you where the first I got to meet and fish with. Watching how well you applied yourself to this sport got me more inspired to edjucate myself in the ways of the FNNer, to also be reconized at this level is a honor in of itself, never thought would ever go this far........see what surrounding yourself with good people does to ya?
Thx Mike, means a ton coming from you........

Big Bad John right there. I knew you could do it.

I read every word, all the while wishing I could of been there with ya. What a day for you and the rest of the Team.
I have been waiting to read this for a long time, and it was worth the wait.
Good work buddy and all the best that comes with it.

:Beer Toast::Thumbs Up:

WWO

Bill.......thx for posting up the kind words, appreciated it coming from the Big Bad North............

First of all, I have never seen a person so happy to catch a fish!!! :Dancing Banana::Big Grin:

Dude, I have never caught anything, well except my wife, this big before ........as much as I appreciate you guys arranging this assault, that place had eluded me all other times in the past so that baby was mine!...........

John,
That was a great fish to enter the S.W.A.T. Brotherhood with.
It seems that all the recent additions to our group of friends are just nailing the big ones..
It couldn't have happened to a better person and I for one was happy to witness it in person.
The way you hugged that fish had me busting up and I will never forget the look on your face...:Big Grin:

Robert, thx for being there brother.......your expertise and ability to apply your talent is truely impressive...........the drive of being able to improvise, adapt and overcome reveals itself in short order......
Thx for pushing hard and settng the standard.......

Don, was a milestone of life my friend that day. As we pulled up you where chatting with Robert I figured you where part of the Ops plan, had no idea it was happenstance. You fit right in as if you where all along, welcome and a huge thx.
The pics, the video and the info was all way over the top, you didn't have to do that but you did for somebody you hardly knew.....thank you.
I look forward to your Mission and many more sessions to come........

Welcome to S.W.A.T john!

I knew your mission would one day be accomplished, way to stick with it.

Frank, you plugged me into your report that day, coolness.....thx.
We got the Intel right away from Robert about your successful session........classic S.W.A.T style,......... precision insertion, job completion and a silent extraction......you have that "silent but deadly" Chi about you Frank which I think has others respecting your talent so getting acknowledgement is more then you know, thank you

Congrats bro you really worked for it. Congrats om getting into swat.

Thank You Sir, it was a challenge but he'll never give you anything you can't handle....
