Newport Harbor LEGAL! 05-19-12

Well there was a lot of thoughts going on this weekend on where to fish, fresh water, charter boat, harbor, and surf but man am I glad I got Lip rippin sob to go to the harbor with me! Anyways we get there and get on the water in our tubes just after grey light and start our first stretch. 1st or 2nd cast in Lip rippin (aka Jake) hooks into a little calico. So Im watching him and take a cast up by an inner pylon with my Big Hammer and get slammed on the drop. I hook up and he peels some drag and snaps me off on the pylon:Evil:.... Maybe I should put my 6lb away! Nah ill give it another try, I tie on another and continue my drift down. 3 or 4 cast later as my big hammer passes the last pylon I just feel weight so I set, wind and kick away...BENDOOOO!!!!! My Shimano Crucial Medium action drop shot rod is bent to the last eye(on 6lb!) Drag is to tight because I didn't want another spotty to pylon me so I'm stripping out line and adjusting my drag while this halibut is giving my those gnarly head shakes. So drags good, now this guy is trying to suck the the bottom and my rod has just a litttttleeee play left to bring him up so I'm inching him up little by little then you see this huge hali come up right next to Jake, "ITS A HUGE HALI!!!" Me and him both yell. Then its off to the bottom she goes! This happens three more times then a fishing boat drives by cheering me on and Jake yells if they have a gaff.(Of course we didn't bring one, we were spotty fishing!) They turn around and throw Jake the gaff, I start inching the hali back up and she comes up perfect right next to Jake and he nails her right in the stomach, PERFECT shot. The guys on the boat were very helpful, they brought it up on their boat, cut the gills and gave me some cord to tie her off on my tube. Continued to fish, 30 minutes later I got a little 10 inch hali, a couple bass hook ups but they didn't stay on. Jake ended the day with 4 or 5 Spottys and 1 Calico.
Props to Lip rippin SOB for the excellent gaff, and to the guys on the boat! Could have ended on a SNAP if they weren't with me.

Never been so stoked in my life. This is my new PB betting my old 18"pb hehe. Pretty nice upgrade!

I've been pounding those flats for about 4 1/2 years in search for that Hali ,but if anyone deserves that fish it's you.
we're just so lucky those teeth didn't cut you off or couldn't get the gaff from the boaters!
It could have been a sad story.
your a great angler and the only other youngster I know that has the passision, desire and dedication, its Always fun fishing with you.
Weather it's Lmb,,smb,calicos,sandies striper,hailbuts wsb, we seem to stick em.
Hope the good luck keeps rollin.
