Hello Fellow Buggy Whippers.
Just thought I would share an easy way I learned how to choose the correct Tippet size/weight. As we all know, the size of the tippet we use is determined based on the fly/hook size we are using on our money end. I personally have a hard time remembering but I came across a simple formula that made it easy. Here's what you do.....
Get the hook size and divide it by 4. Then add 1. That would give you your tippet wt. It's that simple.
Examples:
Size 22 fly divided by 4 = 5.5 plus 1 = 6.5 (go with a size 6 or 7 tippet)
Size 20 fly divided by 4 = 5 plus 1 = 6 (size tippet)
Size 18 fly divided by 4 = 4.5 plus 1 = 5.5 (go with a size 5 or 6 tippet)
Size 16 fly divided by 4 = 4 plus 1 = 5 (size tippet)
Size 14 fly divided by 4 = 3.5 plus 1 = 4.5 (go with size 4 or 5 tippet)
Here's a Tippet chart for reference:
