Woke up and looked at the alarm clock. It read 3:03, pulled out the cell phone and it read 5:15 am. Damn power went out... AGAIN. I realized I missed my scheduled trip on the Native out of Berth 55 so I jumped on the internet to see what else was going out that day. I was really anxious to hit the salt for the first time in a very long time (over 10 yrs). I found the New Del Mar out of Marina Del Rey. I got there by 6:30 am. As we were getting on the boat the skipper said they had no live bait and that we would be using cut squid :x . As soon as we left the marina I started to feel a little blah. Tried to hold it down but couldnt help chumming a little. Got to the first stop and hooked up on some small rockfish and a bounty of sharks (not sure what kind). People started complaining about the amount of hookups on shark so Capt pulled anchor and decided to go elsewhere. 2nd stop produced very little fish, mostly all very small chuckleheads. Last stop was mostly all small sole and rockfish. I had fun talking to some guys I met on the boat, hooking up on sharks (1st time), but definately didnt get my money's worth. FunJunkie's comment about 1/2 day trips being a waste is right on the money. In the future I would probably stick to a 3/4 trip at the least, preferably an overnighter or 1 1/2 day and leave from San Pedro or Long Beach. Cant wait for the Ghetto-gether this weekend!

Final fish count was 4 chuckleheads (1 was almost 6 inches while the rest were about 3-4 inches, tried throwing the 1st small one back in but figured out they pretty much die because of the pressure and end up as seal bait anyway so I just ended up keeping them) 3 sharks biggest one was about 1 1/2' (all C&R although I occasionally love to eat shark). Sorry I know this post is useless without pics but the trip wasnt even worth pulling out the camera. :|

dude, you blew chunks on a local trip? It must have been 10 years since you've been on the salt eh?

Yeah, it's been a long time. It might have been the execssive beer from the night before, it could've been the Venti Americano I had before the trip, or it could've been that I'm just a little girlie girl. For the record though, it wasnt chunks it was all liquid, first it was clear (had 2 bottles of water), then it was brown (coffee), then some other color I cant even describe (Firestone Ale with pizza???). Actually I was trying to be a champ and hold it down but I went to the head to take a leak and someone didnt flush all the way and thats what started the chain reaction. :gayfight: Me & Kevin after chumming.

Yeah, that sounds like a combination of everything you can do wrong.
Alcohol from the night before, watered down cappuccino and slow fishing.

Reflect on this day and repent!!

Thanks Bucket, I hope to see you out there soon!

Actually, sometimes the 1/2 days can be the best value. Like when the cuda are WFO, it literally takes a couple hours to limit out on them. Same deal when the Turdrollers are spawning.

In SD, sometimes when the yellowtail are biting in La jolla, the 1/2 day guys will catch more than than the 3/4 day guys.

yea, but i hear ya, lots of times, 1/2 day rides can be just a boat ride. But if you pick your spots, they can be a real value. Next time, try the Socal out of pierpoint.

i went out on the PM trip that same day. Sucks about not having live bait. Squid sometimes just sucks, as it did that day. We kept getting sharks too, probably at the same spot you guys were at in the morning.

Sorry to hear you were chumming but the new del is usually a great trip.. Fishing is fishing but both Ricks take care of their customers.. That is my home berth and I check the reports and then go slay..
Try them again when the bite is hot.. You will have a great time and get some quality fish to boot..
