Did a three day fishing/camping trip with my good ole fishing buddy Joe “Triggerman” down in Puerto Lobos MX., in the Sea of Cortez. Joe was very excited about trying some new fishing grounds, since he normally does fishing/camping trip to Santa Rosalillita MX., half way down the Pacific side of Baja. Joe was very kind to tow his 16ft Klamath boat “Sun Rise” down below the border to the fishing hole. Our target species were Yellowtail and Groupers.
We drove down Wednesday and drove back on Sunday.
We fished the first day (Thursday 4/19) and caught a bunch of Spotted Bay Bass, Finescale Triggerfish, Pacific Porgies, Cortez Grunts and some beautiful and great eating Spotted Rose Snappers, before the wind picked up around 25 knots and chased us off the water around 12noon.
Here is a picture of the yummy Spotted Rose Snapper.

On our second day (Friday 4/20) we were greeted with no wind and flat calm sea conditions…sweeeet!
Joe popped off the first Yellowtail of the trip.

While we were catching live bait in the morning, we met up with Tom Alder from Puerto Lobos Fishing Adventures, who was running a 6-pack charter. Tom is a super nice and cool guy who offers a great all-inclusive 5 day fishing adventure for only $400.00 per person. http://www.mediabyjohn.com/lobos/
Here is a picture I took of Tom’s nice boat.

Tom was very gracious to let Joe and I buddy boat with him to some of his local spots and also let us hang out with him and his charter group on Friday and Saturday night to eat, drink and shoot the breeze.
We caught some really cool looking Gold Spotted Sand Bass.

Later in the afternoon we enjoyed about an hour and a half of chasing bird schools that were following crashing schools of Yellowtail about a 1/2 mile from shore in 40-45ft of water.

While we were throwing the iron for Yellowtail, Joe hooked a bigger fish that pulled him into the rocks in 45ft of water. Fortunately after a heroic effort, Joe managed to get the fish out of the rock and got it to the boat. A whopping 63lb Gulf Grouper…yeah buddy!!
Here I am with Joe’s Grouper after I yanked it into the boat.

Joe said he was too exhausted to lift up the big Grouper for an on-the-water picture, so we took a picture of him with his fish when we got back to the camp.
Here is Joe with his jackpot Grouper.
