I'm considering taking my hoop down to Newport Pier and getting it wet. Haven't been there since feb. Last time I was ther ei have squid and Mack in my hoop while I was having a blast catching Thornback Rays on squid.

I'm still a very inexperienced hooper. Any tips for a learner? Such as how long to wait, how much bait to use, and what would be a good keeper size, besides the minimum 4 inches.

Also, Spider Crab, what are the rules on these? When I went I landed a 5lb+ Crab, but didn't have a clue about it, so I sent him back.

Any advice appreciated!

With the exception of Dungeness Crab, ALL CRAB is 4 " minimum

I'm not sure myself but I think 15-20 min soak time is good for the nets before pickup

All crabs of the genus "cancer" - that is all rock crabs- is 4". No rules on spider crabs that I am aware of. 15-20 minute soak time sounds good.
