Hey guys,

Need your input. What is the ideal spin cast real size for drop-shotting? In Shimano terms, is a 1000 spooled with 4 or 5 lb mono or flouro the way to go?

6 to 8lb test on a 2500 size is what I like.

i forget the sizes, but yes, it sounds like you are on the right track. Maybe even considering putting braid on the spool and using a 4lb topshot. This will give you more feel for those subtle bites.

Reel shouldn't matter but 1000 to 2500. Personally I like the 1000 for the lightness. The rod should be the focus, without a good DS rod, you will miss a lot. Spool anywhere from 4 to 8# depending on structure.

Thanks. What is your idea of a good drop shot rod paired with a 1000?

Thx. It hadn't even crossed my mind to use braid but yeah, makes sense.

i have a 7'2" crucial medium light. I love it! plenty of backbone for the chunks and plenty light to whip out a 5" worm a long distance. these rods have a lifetime warranty. very good rod for the money.

"Spin Cast" or "Spinning"...
Never used a Spin Cast even as a kid????

Drop shot I use 4# to 6# Line.. If 6# I will often use Fluoro....
Spinning reels preferred for this due to very light presentations = Hard to cast with Casting reels..
750 size is my go to Reel.. Use a 1000 size also...
Rod; Just got a Dobyns 702 SF 7'.. Man I love this Rod.....

As you can see drop shotting is very much a finesse type fishing. Many guys use 4-6 lb test fluoro for ultra finesse fishing. I started with those line sizes but eventually bumped it up to 8lb after many heartbreaks. Another thing I wanted to mention I'm talking about targeting LMB. A lot of Trout anglers drop shot also. I use 8 lb test mono. Haven't really noticed a decline in bites. I guess you can say I'm more of a power drop shotter lol. I use a 7'2" Carrot Stick Drop Shot rod MH fast. I rarely miss any of the fish I hook into since bumping up the line size so try out different line sizes to see what you like.

oops. Yeah I meant "spinning" reel. I find it interesting that many are using 7 ft and > rods for this technique considering were dealing with lighter gear. Good to know, thx.

I hear you. A buddy of mine uses 10 lb floro and a baitcaster for his drop-shot set up. He's the only person I know who does this but he does well with it and won't have it any other way.

I also use a 7 2 crucial.. I was going to go with a 7 footer, glad I didn't! My preference is straight flouro.

Very good advice! I think most people seem to prefer 7 ft + for sure.

BTW, Dfisher is one of the finer drop shot anglers. :)

Good advice...piggy back question--You guys use a 7ft rod for boat fishing?

2500S.

Like the bigger diameter spool for better casting, and the shallow for not having to put 200 yards of 6#, since largemouth aren't sailfish. 2500S carries about 90 yards of 5# FC which is more than enough for drop shot duty.

lately, I have been using my Curado 50E with 6lb green to a 4 or 6lb fluro top shot. Worked really well for me my first time in DVL the other day.
