Took my niece to NPH today as promised, and showed her how much stronger saltwater fish are.

Our first cast and she hooks into a decent YFC! :

A few casts later and she gets a smaller YFC:

We then went to the Buttermouth stronghold and I got this nice little seaperch:

Then this toad hit me so hard, I thought it was a BIG spottie, but turned out to be a huge PB buttermouth! :

What a pig!!

Then I spotted a nice YFC in the shallows feasting on tiny isopods, tossed a chigger craw right in front of his face and..

(this pic is funny, the croaker almost got away from me!)

Then I taught my niece not to fear the "DANGER! END OF STORM DRAIN!" sign. ;)

She caught a NICE 2 lb'er on a YUM tube!

Once she hones her focus, young grasshopper will be a deadly spottie hunter!

Conditions: COLD! Windy! Mostly sunny, ripping, powerful current. Pounding churning violent surf that only roosterfish would bother swimming in!
Bait used: Cured salted mussel, and GULP!
All fish released, except for a croaker unpictured that I decided to eat.

Please respect the harbor and pick up your trash. I found a nasty rusted trotline with 20 hooks on it, and three of the hooks had dead mummified bass on them =(

...Why is it impossible to capture the colors of a Buttermouth?

Nice buddy the only thing better than catching a fish is seeing a kid catch one too like my little bro on his bluegill and carp what a blast!

Awesome Smokehound! Very, very cool to see that big smile on your niece's face.

Capturing the colors on fish is always tough. Best results I've had is with an SLR camera with a polarized filter...at least with some dorado shots I've taken.

Congrats to you and your niece!!!!!

Haha yeah, she was really happy. Start Em young! Polarized filter... I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the tip!

She actually tells me that all the time herself. It was great! I wasn't expecting the fishing to be too good, due to that storm and that buttload of cold water dumped all over!

Very nice! There's just nothing better than taking another family member out and slaying fish.

Smoke,

Awsome!

My son Brad was 14 when he went for a weekend trek to Balboa Island with friends and was able to get me my free ride back into fishing the salt! I so enjoyed the few years that I had to experience some great times in NPH before he out grew it and discovered other ways to enjoy life!

So many of my friends I have met here on this site share common goals of getting the youngsters on the fish and to respect the fishery!

Well done!
