Decided to try something new, so I rounded up a couple of friends to try night fishing for sharks and rays from the docks. I went to the Asian market an bought some squid, mackerel and sardines and we got to our destination at 7:30 p.m. We put on chunks of the baits on c-rigs with 2/0 hooks and didn't have to wait long for our first fish. It was a large (1.5ft) jack smelt on a large chunk of mack. Greedy little bugger. We caught about 15 more smelt, all about 16 -19" long, throughout the night on mack and squid, but nothing on sardines. I did try my friend's UL trout pole on the smelt which was a blast. Around 1 am we finally got our ray. A little saucer-sized one on mackerel. I barely felt him on. All in all it was great fun and we'll definitely be doing it again - at least until we get the big one that spools us. All fish were C&R'd.

Sweet. Alot of people dont give jacksmelt the credit they deserve. I'd rather catch a pig Jacksmelt than a dfg trout!
dammit! looks like i missed the fishing!

I agree. The jacksmelt make great runs and really test the 4lb test and UL rod. They aren't line shy or hook shy either.

nice! I havent been night fishin in awhile.
I loved it. Very peaceful. We even had Mr. Sea Lion stop by for a visit. Strangely enough, the bite dropped off for a while after that. We're hoping to hook a drag-burner one of these days - not a pinniped either.

thanks for the report, i love night fishing especially for bat ray, they give out a helluva fight bro, i've caught a 120lbs bat ray at the docks near balboa, and many many 70lbs, great fight. good luck guys!

Thanks Bones! BTW I am still in awe of your recent catch. I like a lot of us can't get it out of our heads.
