Headed up to the mountains with my daughter, my brother, and his daughter yesterday. Nice conditions. No wind, clear skies, no bugs. The bite was truly wide open. I personally landed at least 50 fish, my brother caught at least 30, and the kids were pulling 'em in pretty steadily too. I made sure to test all of my new patterns of course...

This is my new "Dirty White Boy" pattern. High visibility for rough water. I caught a large portion of the fish on this:

I was using my custom wrapped 6 foot 5wt fly rod, my brother was throwing snap beans, spinners, mini cranks and any other random lure he had not yet caught a fish with. The kids were using Gulp! worms. EVERYTHING was producing. Here are few of the fish I stuck. They ranged from 10-13" or so...

Handed the fly rod to my brother, since he has only ever caught one fish on the fly...

He proceeded to land three in rapid succession.

My daughter was getting hungry, so I gave her the keys to the truck and told her to get the food. I also told her not to lock the keys in the car. Apparently I planted the seed of Murphy's Law. After five minutes of her not returning, I went to see what the hold-up was. Guess what? Yeah, she locked the keys in the car. Luckily I had left the window cracked. I managed to use one of my trusty Double Dancer spoons to snag the keys and pull 'em out through the crack...

We ate lunch, and kept fishing. We kept the floaters and tossed the rest back. In the end we had 16 fish on the stringer! Doh! We have to clean all these! I made my daughter clean three of them though. To which she responded, "I hate fishing!" Ha ha ha. All in all, a great day...

Nice report! Looks like you had a lot of fun with your family up the mountains - not just catching all of those fish, but also testing you fishing skills with the keys.:Big Grin: I liked the flies you've made too.

You are quite a skilled fly crafter! I'll bet that 6' #5 is a lot nicer to work on small streams than the usual run of 8'-9' lightweights.

Hey Skyler,
I see you’re not using the pair of vice grips anymore to hold your hooks while tying.:Big Grin:

Ha ha ha! You remember that huh? I can still whip up a mean dry fly using only a pair of vise grips, a bare spool of sewing thread, some pigeon feathers and some dog hair, he he he.

I can tie 'em bare handed now too!

Excellent report Skyler! Nice fish and even nicer customs flies! I'm liking your 'Dirty white boy' pattern! Can't wait for the ES Opener!

The pattern was made due to getting tired of fishing dries in rough water runs and pockets and not being able to see my fly. I noticed that all of the white debris floating downstream was highly visible, and kept pulling my attention away from my flies. So I made this pattern. Pretty simple. White duck quill wing and tail. White thread body, grizzly hackle, with a gray uni thread base.
