ok so i decided to build whats known as a UGLY DRUM SMOKER. and i thought since a lot of you guys really like BBQ and with the upcoming rib cook off this would be something cool to share with every one.

day one 3/25/2012

the oil drum as i brought it home
http://i1034.photobucket.com/albums/a424/Travis_Hernandez/image001.jpg

cut the top off which will become the lid. i measured 2" down from the bottom of the crimp and i plan on placing the first of three racks about 1" from the top and the second rack 4" below that and the 3 rack 4" below that. i feel this will give me the ability to do three racks of ribs and be able to do a pork shoulder or beef brisket by removing a rack or two

hhttp://i1034.photobucket.com/albums/a424/Travis_Hernandez/image005.jpgand pounded the lid to give it a bit of a dome

that would be cool man give it a try

tomorrow i should have the handle bolted on the lid, a ring around the top for support and a good seal and also my holes drilled for thermometers and the carrier bolts to hold the grills.

Are you going to cut in a lower door ? Smoke stack ? Carburetor ? Temp gauge ?

DAY TWO 3/26/2012

so i borrowed some hardware from work and a electric drill and i was able to get this done today, about 2 hours put in today.

put the handle on my lid
http://i1034.photobucket.com/albums/a424/Travis_Hernandez/image001-1.jpg

bolted in a support band around the top this also gives the lid a nice tight fight got to work on it a bit more so that i can just set the lid on with out much effort to fit it on and also got the carrier bolts to support the rack
http://i1034.photobucket.com/albums/a424/Travis_Hernandez/image003-1.jpg

got my ball valve and air ports put in

ok cant see it in this pic but i wire wheeled the paint off half the drum but i was starting to get tired and i really wanted to do my first burn today so i gave up on the paint prep and did the first of three burns. this burn was a kinda small one wasn't sure what to expect so due to my lack of space to get a safe distance from the house i did a small fire that i pushed around the drum with a shovel

DAY 4

ok so i know its been a few days since any update, ive been a little busy and little broke.

but i did manage to pick up and install the carrying handles and a heavy duty, lol duty  smoker temperature gauge. I also found out my local wal-mart carries more bbq equipment and hardware then my local Lowe's or home depot combined how sad is that.

http://i1034.photobucket.com/albums/a424/Travis_Hernandez/image002-1.jpg

and my future builds that i also picked up this weekend. If i can build these the way that i want they will be the luxury edition of UDS's

It was really rewarding to hear all the compliments on both my home made smoker and on my ribs maybe that smoker or the one thats in the works will make it out to the future events
