I'm new to trout fishing and only have a summer of catfishing, but love it.

What are some rigs (with explanations) I can try for fishing Lake Irvine this Saturday?

Thanks!

Velveta cheese sprayed with WD40 on a Zebco 33 rod with 8lb line. I caught my personal best with that set-up in 1971 at Irvine Lake, home of the Big Fish Club. I'm sure that if I keep trying that rig, I'll do it again someday.

Will you be fishing from shore or boat?

Well if your fishing from a boat theres a lot of rigs you can use. If your going to use powerbait or nightcrawlers then you should use a carolina rig. If you want to throw plastics like power worms or mice tails you can use a splitshot or dropshot rig. Minijigs are also a good choice at irvine. You can also troll lures. Theres some videos on youtube that were made by the irvine lake staff and that tell you what lures and colors work.

A Carolina rig with 4lbs test for bait and wait. Use a short leader with power bait. You can also use the same set up and cast plastic worms. Reel it in sloowwww.

Just pray to God the fish are biting and any rigging will produce. I have spent thousands of dollars and sometimes that doesn't help. Skills + Luck + fish on the prowl + first time fishermen get lucky. Oh did I mention seeing the trout.

I tried a mini jig, trolling and a spoon lure, but they did not get a single bite.

What ended up working for me was a sliding sinker rig with 18" 4lb leader and chartruse Powerbait.

OMG, you guys are killing me....
All of these are good bits, especially the ball of Velveeta (very old school, very effective). Half a 'crawler fished six feet under a bobber, or fish the same half, Carolina-rigged and blown up at 16" off the bottom.
If they're not biting nightcrawlers, they're not biting.
