I was fishing Hansen recently where I met this guy who seemed to know about every possible fishing place in the world. Anyway, he got me interested in hitting up the LA River for some carp. He was talking about a path from Balboa that you could take to a good fishing spot. I live in Pasadena, and I believe there are some good places to fish closer to me like around Atwater and that area. What I am wondering is what happens to all the good carp habitats when the rains send torrents of water washing down that concrete river. I have seen some really powerful water running in there, and it seems like all that water would wash out all the dirt and vegetation along the way.

One would think but two weeks after a major storm last year, we were catching Carp at our usual spot. The high water left debris high up in the trees and bamboo but it all was still there as far as we could tell. The Carp seemed to be interested in our damsel fly nymphs, anyway.

They hunker down and ride it out. In Long Beach they are at the same spot every.
Others aren't so lucky. I work near the Queen Mary and caught a FW Red Ear Slider at Pier J.

In LB they can not go upriver due to concrete slide area near Willow St.
If they swim down river 2 miles to Anaheim st it turns into SW. So basically they are stuck in a
2 mile section in LB.

After a hard rain some FW species get flushed into the SW.
The SW comes up to Anahiem St in LB on high tide, That Mixed FW/SW spot has big Mullet.

"Fishing with Stones"...classic! That video always amuses me...good sh*t!!!

Cartman, there is a hidden lake near Balboa which has some big carp in it. Was going to fish it once till I noticed the 'No Fishing' signs then I found out it's a natural reserve. It's definitely a ninja mission if anyone wants to try it.

yep, i've fished around atwater...haven't checked out after the rains though... definitely some huge fish in there. when the water is shallow you can see some giants in the rapids. there are also a lot of deeper pools that can be fished along that atwater trail.
