For halibut. Can't go wrong with Lucky Crafts. Anchovy and ghost smelt are good starters. They will cost you 18 to 20 bucks a pop though, but they produce.

As a begining surf fishing newbie, i'm aiming for anything that'd bite the hook

Only thing i've caught so far are string rays, butterfly rays, and sand sharks.. all off of squid.

I'd like to catch halibut and i've heard LCs are the way to go.

I just want to open up my selection of fish I can catch.

screw LC's.... swimbaits is where its at. From perch to leopard sharks, you can do it all for a fraction of the cost and not cry when you loose one lol.

X2 on the Swimmies. Even the Krocs and Kastmaster kick a ss.
My PB from surf in LB was on a 3" Crome/blue Kroc. 30" on a 10 min session during lunch break.
I don't do the 2 to 4 + hour sessions like most. In and out usually 20 min sessions with long pants
and work boots wet/dry sand area. Lots of skunks on short sessions.

If you really want to hook up in the surf then 'Get on the Crack'
Small trout Rod, 2 - 4 lb test 3/8 to 1/2 oz sliding egg, swivel, 18" leader, # 6 8 10 hook.

BGSW Berkley Gulp Sandworm in Camo color. Cut the worm into a 1 1/2" piece.
You will catch Surf Perch, Yellow fin croakers. Perch are in tight and croakers on long casts (unless low tide).
